I had my 20 week scan today. You’ll remember I had a total meltdown over my 2 NHS 12 week scans because the sonographer was horrible and I ended up raising it as an informal complaint. I did know I would have a different sonographer as the horrible one doesn’t do 20 week scans, and my previous midwife (who herself has just gone on mat leave with baby number 2) said that this sonographer that does 20 week scans was amazing. She was soooo right. If there was ever an example of someone loving their job it was her. She asked my husband his name so she knew who she was talking with, asked me how the pregnancy was going and if I had any concerns. I said I wasn’t sure if I could feel any movements yet and she reassured me about that. She talked me through how the scan would be before we even started. She was so positive and happy and seemed so excited for MrDragName and I. When MrDragName joked that he could never tell what he was looking at she was really reassuring about it and explained how scanning worked etc. She went to great lengths to check I was comfortable during the scan even when she had to press and move about (compared with the 12 week horror who actually hurt me with her antics). I think navigating my extra bit of fat was a bit of a challenge but she said nothing and didn’t tut or fuss, just moved about and checked all the things she needed to. She confirmed what our private NIPT had told us, we’re having a boy

(I did know the NIPT being wrong is basically not possible but I’d got it in my head she might be like ‘it’s a girl!’ Haha!). She tried all sorts but he took every opportunity possible to hide his face and she seemed genuinely a bit disappointed she hadn’t been able to get us a still shot where you could see him in profile, but she had been so thorough with all the checks I didn’t even mind. She got us a good snap of him all bundled up and funny one of him face on where he looks a bit like a ghost boy (we have a similar image from our private 12 week scan where he looks like a tiny demon). He got a clean bill of health, my placenta is posterior and out of the way of my cervix and the blood flow is healthy. His heartbeat is healthy and it was incredible to hear. If the worst had happened and she had seen something that was a concern, I feel really confident she would have been able to tell us in a very clear and gentle way where we would have known what was going on.
It was the absolute opposite of my 12 week scan experience and I’m so grateful for it. I did tell her she was amazing but I am equally going to raise it so her manager knows, because clearly the horrible sonographer could learn a HUGE amount from today’s one. It’s really put me at ease and made me excited for the second half of the pregnancy!
Tomorrow I’m back down to earth with a bump, though. Physio appointment for my nighttime weak and leaky bladder which I’m honestly just soooo embarrassed about. I am seriously impressed with the speed of the referral though, given how under pressure the NHS is. Hoping I might be able to squeeze in asking for some advice around my bad lower back as it’s going to become more challenging the more pregnant I get!
