I remember way back when I was 12 I was in sea cadets, theres alot of water based activities so before you are allowed in the water you have to do a "swim test". In the test you have to wear heavy clothing we were told jeans jumpers wellies or boots and a big coat, all absorbed the water very quickly . This is controlled in a pool may I add but non of us could swim the full length in the clothing and could barely keep afloat its extremley difficult , heavy and EXHAUSTING and as I said that was in a controlled environment and a warm pool with help if we needed it which we all did non of us could climb out the pool, cant even begin to imagine what would happen in a freezing cold river first thing in the morning aloneThat sounds like no jacket I’ve ever had. Have you been into water with your duvet-filled jacket? How long did it keep you floating for?
The drop into the river at that point is about 10-12 feet, and there’s no way out because the banks are too steep. You couldn’t scrabble up any siding. Dropping into freezing cold water from 10 feet would knock the breath out of you to say the very least, and then you’ve only got a very short time before the cold completely incapacitates you.
