People get trapped being dependent and people without children lose out.

I 100% agree, just because you don't have kids you still need to pay housing etc ffs!
Absolute bleeping joke people don't just get given help to live regardless of the fan gremlins x

Heya - I mentioned tax credits so just want to clarify it was by no means a judgment on “better” or “not better” jobs, it was a comment on that particular user saying her husband was a high earner which I’m sure you’d agree is contradicted by her reference to tax credits.

Firstly the value of a job is rarely captured in its salary, eg look at the key worker debate of the pandemic - all of those roles are underpaid if not low paid work yet absolutely essential for our survival/society as you’ve pointed out re elder care. Tax credits are a benefit to companies not families, businesses should be paying their staff a fair and living wage that doesn’t require government top ups to ensure people can afford to live a baseline standard of life. Absolutely no judgment here and sorry if you felt that comment was in any way crappy, honestly not my intention at all.
Absolutely agree! In fact, there’s a thread running about this on MN at the moment. Apparently some businesses can’t fill vacancies and as usual there’s a ton of polarised opinions, but I’m with the people saying that these companies need to offer better wages, no zero hour contracts and better working conditions. They’ve had 20 years of being able to pick and choose who they employ and with Brexit and Covid it’s coming back to bite them on their arses. The government should never have had to top up the wages of employees who work for companies that make millions of pounds profit a year, yet will only offer zero hours contracts and minimum wage (and absolutely no disrespect to anyone who claims TC or UC). It’s exploitation, both of foreign workers and British workers.

Agree completely. They all believe in free market forces when it benefits them, when the work force is opting out of underpaid & over worked roles suddenly they’re stunned at the concept. It’s like with Brexit them saying there’s a shortage of fruit pickers - no there’s a shortage of people desperate enough endure the working conditions in exchange for low wages huns, sort it out and you’ll find the pickers!

My wife has been in mumsnet for years. I was on it for about 6 months. My wife still shows me the craziness regularly.

When I was there I found it to be absolute poison for the most part. Being male, I wasn’t allowed an opinion on anything and was regularly attacked for my gender and their assumptions of my skin colour and sexuality.

I took it as it is largely a female space but after 6 months I started to argue back a bit. Mildly. Very soon there were people trying to get me banned and the occasional admin hinting towards it, so I exited.

Dreadful place, full of very angry and hate filled people.

Ah mumsnet
My favourite thing on Mumsnet is "think x"

"DS has been accepted to a very old, prestigious university in the south of England. An enormous number of politicians went there. Can't say the name, but think Cambridge."

"Thinking of moving to an English-speaking country in the southern hemisphere where they play cricket and rugby and have unusual animals. Don't want to give too much information as would be outing. Think New Zealand."

"DH has taken up a new hobby. Plays with a team of other men, chasing a ball around a pitch. Think rugby."
Mumsnet and “hobbies”. It would always be the word “hobby” and never saying what it actually was. As if a partner playing golf could be “outing”.

who uses the word “hobby” in real life?

Sorry offtopic, but kinda on topic with UC

I'm glad the UC stories are exposing that it's only people with children that can work 2 hours to earn an extra £20 and that childless claimants need to work 6 hours to get £20 extra

I’ve been lurking on this thread but keeping my head down (due to being burned on mumsnet over this subject in the past!).
I’ve just worked it out and I would have to work 4 extra hours to get an extra £20 (more like £21.60) per week. I have 2 children.

Ah interesting! I was taking the BBC report at face value. It's clearly a pretty complex picture with lots to factor in. Could almost do with a half an hour infographics show to explain the scenarios!

Edit just seen that there's a universal credit thread

Will copy over the last few posts !

So I’ve deleted the MN app today after far too many witchy comments for either expressing an opinion or actually pointing out law 🙄. I’ve been on the Instagrammers type forums for ages, thought I’d look at the chats to see what you’re all like…and this is the first thread I saw. Think I’ve found my people!

Just to add to the amount of trolls on there - you can’t get any info on a poster without paying their subscription! So you can’t see if a poster is new, has posted before etc. Although of course the name change never helped with that. Anyone can log on as anyone posting whatever and wherever there and you have no idea what they have posted before or any idea how long they have been a member of the site. It’s like they want as many trolls as possible tbh 🤣

you can still search a member's posts without paying x

It really is great here. We all seem to get along here, even if we disagree. And it is user friendly. MN is stuck in the 80s. Get stuck in.

They all ag off Tattle over there, but in my experience it’s much nicer and friendlier here. People are far more accepting of other opinions and just rub along and agree to disagree. I’ve never seen a mumsnet style pile on here for example. Most of them are like playground bullies/mean girls.

Tattle is definitely much nicer. People here are much more friendlier and I haven't seen anyone post rude sarcastic replies or sneer at anyone for having a different opinion or ask for evidence to back up their opinion.

Mumsnet is just an echo chamber now full of mean joyless bitter women who never left the mean girls mentality in the playground.

I've now blocked the website on my phone.

Any thread of interest gets deleted or someone with a different opinion comes on to destroy it. An example of this is someone who is trying to spread some joy on a Covid thread or a leaver trying to calmly explain why they voted differently

Anyone who dares post something joyful on the Covid thread or tries to explain why they voted differently gets their thread derailed.

As soon as they post it, you almost know that a klaxon goes off and familar posters jump on the thread as they're forever on the Covid and Brexit boards and rip the OP's opinions to shreds. The OP gives up and goes away and it just becomes an echo chamber.

Some posters remind me of my ex - he thought his opinions and likes were the best and everyone who thought differently was a brainwashed sheep or had crap taste.

The black and white thinking on there annoys me.

For all the talk about difficulty hiring, I'm not seeing muuch movement in salaries for anyone other than Lorry Drivers. I'm looking to change jobs, live in the SE (within zone 6) and still only seeing salaries around the £20,000 mark for customer service roles.

Tattle is much nicer than Mumsnet. The atmosphere is far nicer and it’s less as someone said “Mean girls”

Tattle also has an edit button and the website is much more modern than Mumsnet. The emojis are better and I love the fact you can add gifs too. Mumsnet's website is too clunky and like people have said stuck in the mid 90s to 2000.

I meant to add in my other post that posters demanding proof to back up their opinion reminds me of being at school.

Wage stagnation is a real problem & why so many are finding it hard to get a mortgage. I also think the concept of London weighting is an utter myth (outside of public services which tend to be so poorly paid they need to offer *something*, and some roles that historically have been exclusive to London eg IB). I’m in a technical field and see the exact same salaries regionally, and even outside of your next biggest/popular cities like Manchester or Edinburgh. It is also really hard to hire people in my field (in London) which shocked me, but on the other hand I’m not surprised because you can go up to Manchester and rent a flat *alone* in media city for a few years, have a significantly better lifestyle, minimal commute, then go buy a decent 3 bed house within a few years on the same salary you’d be in a house/flat share with waiting til you met someone to halve rent and start saving with. Obvs remote working will change all this but it’ll only widen the gap between rich comfortable and very very poor.

Sorry I know this isn’t the house prices thread lol.

When your weekly ticket to work in London is 150 a week with one train a hour during rush hour we need as much London weighting as possible

I’m confused sorry, I’m not denying that it’s required I just don’t see any variance in wages for roles in tech whether they’re in London, Surrey, Birmingham, Bristol, etc, so I don’t believe any private sector companies actually apply a weighting. ETA - this obviously excludes outliers like Google’s top engineers or hedge fund managers or HNWI household managers who will only have those jobs in London (or NY or Tokyo or wherever).

In public sector roles they do but it’s minimal so, pre covid when they were billboard advertising for police recruits it was something like a £3k pcm bolt on? You could spend that on parking alone, it doesn’t adequately cover the cost of living (and I acknowledge other cities have high costs of living too).
