Re racism...
I think the important thing is the context, the fact that CH was employed by the NHS and invited CB onto her podcast to share about her traumatic birth story. Black women are however many times more likely than white women to die in labour or have a worse labour experience and sociologists etc attribute that to racial prejudices. Now that’s not saying that every midwife and doctor etc is an outright racist, but we are all socialised in a way and hold inherent beliefs about different groups of people/races. So if a midwife believes black women to be loud/hysterical/dramatic (these are old tropes btw not my beliefs!) you can see why a black woman in distress wouldn’t get the immediate help that a white woman (who midwife doesn’t believe to be any of these things) does. Ergo complications ensue etc etc, and the midwife probably doesn’t even realise that her unconscious bias led to her holding off an intervention etc? Like it’s that subtle but it’s 100% there.
Knowing this is a “thing” it was particularly stupid for Clem, NHS employee and birth advocate or whatever the fuck she marketed herself as, to comment on anything to do with CB and race. It clearly overstepped a line and showed a lack of understanding of/compassion for the issue.
It really showed her up to be ruthlessly fake & nasty and is really damaging for the #brand. I also think CB is ghastly and I don’t like a lot about her, I think her content is weak tbh. I haven’t seen the madam video has anyone got it? She’s lucky Twitter is full of middle class priv school girls who say all work is sex work forgetting that their kids will be marketing managers like them, not the care leavers / immigrants / sexual abuse victims disproportionately represented in sex worker groups. But that’s another essay !
Yep
perfectly put
@heretoreaditall2019 - also the thing about racism/sexism/disability discrimination is not how everyone perceives it, but how it makes that person or class of people feel. So as a white woman I can’t say wether it is or isn’t racist but neither can Clemmie. Women of colour are the only people that can determine how that made them feel. That’s why you don’t bring things like race into a throw away comment on a public forum, you certainly don’t do that when you’ve used that person on your podcast to highlight the plight of that particular race in relation to your “specialised subject” and you absolutely DON’T do that when you are pretending to be that persons friend irl!
I write stuff on here and I’m a nobody, I’m not trying to build a brand and I’m not a celebrity (well except for in my wildest dreams), but even some of the stuff I write is pretty raw and on the edge and I sometimes look and think...fuck that’s a bit naughty/rude/insulting af...but tomorrow if I’m outed as me nobody loses anything. Clemmie came on here, knowing her position as a midwife, as an influencer, as a wife, as a friend and went Fuxking bonkers slaying people...she didn’t think for one minute of the consequences and that, I think, is her MO...as witnessed on the reality TV show. She does what she wants “in the moment” and fuck everything...it’s very self destructive and you can forgive that of a 19/20 year old student but not a thirty something professional, who has used that profession to build her Instagram business, a mother of 4 girls and an “influencer” with massive reach. No, Clemmie has no filter and no moral compass so she can’t come back because her history shows she can’t control her inner twat so she’s always gonna offend someone.
