There's a poll on Mail+ about this so I did it for fun - over half of people were saying no, they didn't think these alerts should be a thing. I personally am not that bothered and am interested to see what actually happens. I'll probably be asleep so it'll wake me up!
Although I do get why it might be a problem for people in DV situations etc who have a secret phone. I hope those in that situation are able to disable it.

Exactly, I see people in group chats now saying what a waste of time it was as some didn't get it and those that did the message was only a test.

How much is it costing the taxpayer? Especially if a lot of people don’t want them and a lot not even receiving them , how many people are actually prepared in the event of an emergency with the limited resources we now have available, I think we’ve only got two ambulances to cover a very large area and certainly no army personnel to help.

I’m not trying to deny anyone’s right to their thoughts and feelings, but I think the level of conspiracy theories is ridiculous. Covid being an attempt to control us, for example. It doesn’t make any sense to me and it’s really tedious to see that some people have nothing better to do than sit online and try to instill fear in to others. Others who are usually vulnerable too. These days people think that we all have to hear their opinion about everything and we really don’t! I don’t care who did and didn’t get the Covid vaccine or any others. That’s why people have the choice. Although I did care when my mum got mumps when working as a practise nurse because people haven’t vaccinated their children. She still lives with the effects today.
I just think as I have already said that the outrage comes from privilege for the vast majority! The people of Ukraine probably wish they had this system 12 months ago.

It’s interesting that the majority expect it for weather, which I’m sure it will, but in the US it’s also used for active shooter situations. So if we are ever unfortunate to have those situations here. I guess similar to what we have had in the past it will be used for that so it really could save people.
Had this a few years ago abroad. All us Brits looked at each other in a panic that it was a mass hacking! Then went back into the sea for a swim.
(Have turned my off, have no interest in it).
You can turn them off easily enough if for some reason they start sending them out weekly.

Most people don't seem to understand what it is for imo, apart from a house fire (which people should have home alarms for) we are hardly prone to wildfires in the UK (as of yet anyway..) it is clearly more about floods/ gales etc. totally agree about the additional way thing, most young people j don't know don't own a TV or radio, unless netflix are going to start warning about weather conditions mobiles are really neededThis and people aren't saying that now warnings will only be given out on phones.
It's an additional way to get the information out there and quite useful for people that don't watch tv or listen to the radio. Older people use traditional media a lot more.
Mike graham talk radio was saying yesteraday how he doesn't need it as if there's a fire he'll be able to see it.

Sometimes I rue the day I ever got a smart phone.I was visiting my elderly parents, neither of them knew about it. My mum asked her neighbours and again they were unaware. My dad is early dementia and my mum is exhausted and ill. The neighbours all elderly and various illnesses. These people aren't stupid, far from it. But not everyone lives on sm or rolling news and that doesn't make them anyless important. My dad started to get upset about the government scaring people. It was all a bit upsetting for a while. These people aren't crazy conspiracy theorists, like some ignorant people love to call anyone nowadays who dares to raise concerns about anything. Such a dumb mentality.
The only saving grace was that everyone involved, including me have very basic, UNSMART phones so nothing would have happened anyway
I did pop over to the CT thread earlier on, and noticed that no one had even mentioned the emergency alert today.

Just because you're not likely to experience it doesn't mean that no one needs it. Plenty of people live near rivers or the sea and the alerts would likely only be if there's a 100% chance of flooding and a danger to life caused by it
Missile alerts normally get used to tell people to seek shelter. We're not exactly a country that's at war or have an annoying neighbour like North Korea, so we wouldn't get these alerts and even if we did... we'd be completely useless because we're not educated
It does strike as significant that the system is being rolled out during a war in Europe but it also seems like a system we should have had ages ago just in case in general

It wasn't even loud and my phone is always on full blast.
At least a message came up so if there is imminent danger we know it works.
