I have a Galaxy S8, my partner has a newer version. We both searched for the switch off feature, but could not find it on our phones. I think this is another aspect that has really angered me, we were not given a choice.

Same re difficulty turning it off advance of test and have same phone as you. I checked out the online explanations. I went into my general settings as that seemed to be what the daily mail was saying.

If you go into where you send text messages there are 3 dots in right hand corner. Go into settings there and you will find emergency alerts.

Dont let people make you feel bad about it I can programme in basic, basic and html and I never found the alert settings until yesterday.

That’s the thing nobody knows where to go they only send that info along with the alert! How would elderly or disabled people manage if they’re alone? Surely it would be better having a local plan in place and actually give people information on what’s available in the event of an emergency now ,instead of waiting until the emergency happens

There is a local plan in place, that’s why you see emergency services rescuing people on the news.

If you live in an area prone to flooding then there is tons of information about what to do. I live close to a flood plain and the parish and local councils are very active and informative.

The new system is just the UK catching up with other developed countries.

I don’t ! But if the case arose there’s nothing in place here, like I said earlier businesses can’t even source sandbags with our rubbish drainage/sewer systems never given an upgrade in decades , half an hour of torrential rain and the manholes are lifting, the rivers never burst it’s banks yet but even if it did there’s nothing we can do about it

I mean I think if your house was about to be flooded you would probably want to get your family and pets out if you could, a tiny bit of advanced warning and knowing where was available to go would be useful

Honestly have no idea why people have their knickers in a twist about this alert thing so many countries have it already in place . Uk just happens to behind with the times

and yes some phones won’t harm gone off with the alert.
when I lived in nz , they were always doing alerts to evaluate the system, how cell towers would respond and the ability for mobile phones to receive the alert. All phone networks now will be looking into the protocols to see what went wrong hence why it’s a TEST

Most people don't seem to understand what it is for imo, apart from a house fire (which people should have home alarms for) we are hardly prone to wildfires in the UK (as of yet anyway..) it is clearly more about floods/ gales etc. totally agree about the additional way thing, most young people j don't know don't own a TV or radio, unless netflix are going to start warning about weather conditions mobiles are really needed

I don't really see why we need it but I also don't see the harm in having it either. If god forbid, there was something major happening and we weren't warned, people would be complaining that there was no system to warn us. It's better to have it that not have it imo

Thank you for this information, and for your constructive post in generel. I have now turned off the emergency text alerts. Will the settings in the text notifications, also disable the audio alerts though?

It should do - as I understand it the sound is triggered by the message so if the messages are disabled that should stop it.

All I want to know is where me and old shep will end up in the event of the great flood, do I need to start on the Ark now or wait for the alert …Will this be another White Elephant ( that I won’t be taking on my Ark)…Don’t think that’s too much to ask ,we all need to know what the contingency plans are in the event of a real emergency.

I’ve just been on my area’s Nextdoor app. There’s a lady on there who advised people to take the SIM out of their phone, turn it off, then wrap in tinfoil and put it in the microwave. She also suggested a Faraday cage (I knew the one I stashed under the sink would come in useful one day).
She was deadly serious and delighted when a couple of others smuggly joined in because “they are the ones who know what really going on”. I’d hate to live my life in perpetual fear of perceived threat.

I thought people were striving to be more compassionate in the name of social justice in this day and age but I guess not.

I don’t think it’s going to work on older phones because they’re not enabled to allow the technology I guess. I read this morning that it won’t work on phones which don’t have 4G and upwards and phones which are only Wi-Fi enabled. But as you said, these things would likely be on the news or hopefully the local community would look out for each other so that everyone is aware should it go off for whatever reason.

my phone has 4 and 5g unfortunately where I live doesn’t. I didn’t get it and I’m on 3
