I'm glad we're mostly in agreement that he's done nothing wrong (no offence to the people who don't like what he did, you're entitled to your opinion). When I first read the article I was thinking 'whats wrong with this?' but thought I'd be crucified if I said so here.

She's an adult, deliberately led him on then humiliated him by selling private messages to the press.

I hope she's getting all the flack she deserves and matures a little.

No one should have to make a statement on social media. It’s ghoulish trying to get them to cry for everyone’s entertainment. They are probably devastated. But even if they are just a bit sad, it’s nobody’s business - they worked together 30 years ago.. the comments at the moment on Instagram are all either Free Palestine or say something about Matthew Perry. It’s weird.

Yeah he's a sleaze bag but it irritates me that women use these sorts of things to get their 5 seconds of fame... I'm not sure going to the press with it is really the right approach although I do get why she wanted to out him to some extent.

I really dislike this trend and the do anything and everything for social media fame. The younger generation want a social media paycheck at any cost. I don’t believe for one minute that she feels bad about it. She knows it’s still publicity in the end which is what she wanted.

Absolutely, I remember in particular David Schwimmer's tribute to him and you could tell they weren't close at all anymore. Even Lisa admitted they hadn't spoken in years when she wrote a prologue for his book.

Addiction literally changes your brain chemistry & thought processes. Yes, he should have protected himself by not being around anyone who could supply. But it’s really not as simple as that unfortunately.

I would have agreed, however after reading his book, I'm afraid it changed my opinion of him completely. Addiction aside, he didn't come across as a very nice man (and I'm the biggest friends fan!)

Someone just shared a post about the noughties diet culture on Instagram. God it was so bad, the body-shaming magazines, the special k diet, “drop a size”, the atkins craze, Kate moss was everywhere, most of the celebs were tiny and obsessed with being a size 0! I don't blame the friends girls. Thankfully we know better now.

Sadly, I'm not sure we do. Mags like Closer are just one long 'drop a bikini size in 6 weeks' type articles. And if not being thin, then having tons of surgery to look like everyone else.

I understand that Ketamine therapy has been life changing for a lot of people, but I'm still shocked that it would be prescribed to someone with a history of such severe addiction. It just feels like a terrible idea, and I'm not surprised this is how it ended.

That's a ridiculous amount of money, I understand famous people need to pay the extra but surely someone was profiting of him not being sober and not having his best interests at heart

Well, if he was receiving prescribed drugs for the past 18 months then he was still sober?

Didn't the reports say that it was only a few weeks before he died that doctors stopped prescribing him ketamine and that this is why he bought it illegally?

So it could have been true that he was sober when he was writing and promoting his book, but was getting prescription drugs that were prescribed to him by his doctors.

Didn’t they say that he failed to turn up for his prescribed ketamine appointment and we speculated that perhaps he was afraid they would be able to tell the amount of illegally sourced ketamine was in his system?

I agree with you, though, that during the promo of the book, he seemed sober. It was a very demanding schedule of constant interviews and he seemed to be strong and healthy.

I wondered about the choice of song at his funeral but just came across an interview whereby he was asked if you could choose a soundtrack of your life, what would it be? and he replied Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush Don’t Give Up. He said the camera goes round and around them while they hold eachother for the entire song and he said that when he signs the books, he always writes Don’t Give Up. Obviously, this is why it was the song picked.

The issue is that whatever he was actually using it for and even if he was using it legitimately, the public opinion of ketamine is so negative that that’s all that will be remembered. Plus 99% of people will just read the headline. It’s so sad.

I'm saying the obvious, but i know Chandler wasn't 'him', possibly makes it even worse knowing he played the character so perfectly when he was obviously so troubled.

I can’t either. He was a comic genius and so hugely likeable.

I dunno but Lisa Kudrow’s comment after he died ‘he must have taken something that didn’t agree with warm water’ resonates. At the time, it seemed somewhat insensitive but now it seems shocking he was anywhere near the damn pool being so heavily sedated. Also, makes you wonder if they (Friends cast) knew well he was far from sober but couldn’t help him. I think the addiction made his world very small because of the necessity to hide it. He probably studiously avoided his old pals and surrounded himself with enablers and suppliers instead. Perfectly understandable - you don’t want to keep lying to people so you ignore them completely.

True. I entirely agree with what you say - however, I’m kind of mixed about it.

On the one hand, I understand what you are saying and the premise of the book that got to #1 bestseller - was that he had overcome his demons. He said that he wanted above all to be remembered for helping others and that anyone could come to him needing help andhe would never turn his back.

In reality, untrue. He had zero dealings with anybody it appears except an insatiable supply and enablers to assist.

My opinion in his defense though is - he isolated himself, he didn’t have a wife/partner/children to witness and carry the trauma into the future? I feel like he struggled very much alone. He carried the weight of his addictions on his own shoulders when he easily could have had a ‘picture perfect’ life for the pretense. That, in itself and for whatever reason, is admirable to me. Don’t drag kids into your chaos.

Completely agree that it’s a blessing that there aren’t kids left behind to deal with this trauma.
And I’m not without sympathy that MP could only deal with life through a haze of opiates, or whatever.
I’m reminded of a friend of Amy Winehouse saying that when Amy went through a period off booze and drugs, she was winning every accolade and producing some fine work.
But she allegedly turned to her friend after picking up an award one night and whispered that she hated it all, and she wasn’t enjoying life without the drugs.
For some people I guess that’s just their reality, sadly.

It was his choice to take drugs. Why are they trying to pin it on his (female) friends?
The crime rate in LA is at a huge high, have the police really got fuck all better to do?

And he had dodged death so many times before (his bowels literally exploded due to drug use). He was a drug addict. A rich and talented one, but an addict who willfully took the risk. It's not really a surprise that some of his friends were users too.
