I've just been catching up with this thread. The new book sounds interesting, though again you wonder why he doesn't just take his evidence to the police rather than try to make money. Somewhere up thread is a discussion about the McCanns and co staging an accident/disposing of Madeleine's body to save their careers/lifestyle etc. I'm in the same business as them and am sure they would never have lost their careers for losing a child in an 'accident'. They could have glossed over the negligence part - look how quickly they got out of Dodge when questions about that were raised. As a motive to stage M's abduction it doesn't work. The GMC doesn't even strike off doctors who've accidentally killed their patients.
The theory goes that it wasn’t that they
staged an abduction because they were worried about losing their jobs. It is that they were making decisions in real time in split seconds, and the speculation is that the loss of jobs issue must have been on their minds along with other things as they quickly came up with a plan. And that plan unfolded and developed and changed in real time as the minutes, hours, days and weeks passed, including seeding the idea of (rather than “staging”) an abduction because they had to have an explanation as to why their child had vanished.
It can’t be understood really unless you put yourself in their shoes
as it was happening - not years later with the benefit of hindsight.
So they find M dead behind the sofa and have to make some drastic immediate decisions in a matter of minutes. There is no time for a long chat about whether or not the GMC will strike them off because they’ve killed their own kid due to negligence. And even if they were confident the GMC wouldn't strike them off, they would certainly have been aware that they were facing:
- a lot of questions about said negligence (and how exactly do you “get out of dodge” about that when you’ve admitted that your 4 year old child is dead and you were at the restaurant when she died and had done the same thing every night that week?)
- Portuguese police involvement and a potential court case in a foreign country, and possible jail time
- a lot of uncertainty for days, weeks, months and the implications of all that on the twins
- the other friends dragged into it
- a huge potential scandal if the papers get hold of it
- and in the light of that possible scandal, questions about their professional competence from the wider public (which surely would impact any decisions by the GMC?).
All this presumably would have gone through their minds in a flash. And then it was a question of cutting their losses and doing what needed to be done, which is I’m sure how Gerry at least would have thought about it.
