The judge refers to expert witnesses who have given evidence in the case.

He says the jury would expect to hear evidence from experts with relevant expertise.

Their role is to be a witness, not an advocate.

He says the defence have criticised that evidence, and will come to that when going through the relevant cases.

He says the jury are entitled to consider their opinions when coming to conclusions on the case.

It is up to them to consider some or all of their evidence.

He says their evidence is part of the case, and the jury should not consider it in isolation, and should be considered in the context of expert, clinical and relevant circumstantial evidence.

The experts did exclude some reasons for collapses based on their own knowledge and expertise.

Posted as the last thread locked. How is everyone feeling now the verdict is so close to coming? I'm praying for a guilty verdict for all the families so they can get justice.
I don't know how much I'll be able to follow today as in a and e with mini Caledonian as he's not putting on weight as he should despite constantly feeding and he's very sleepy so much so I'm struggling to wake him for feeds (13 yesterday and had to wake him for 9 of them 😢)
Ah no :( poor baby. Hopefully the doctors can get to the root of the problem and he starts to pick up 🩵

I’m so glad the end is in sight, and I really feel she’s guilty. Just hope the jury make the right decision with all the evidence they have. I don’t envy them, there are no winners either way.

He says he will turn to the relevant cases.

He says the material is dense, and is conscious of the circumstances in which they happened, and does not intend to be insensitive.

He reminds the jury of his initial direction for the jury to treat the case on the evidence, not on emotion.

He adds he is conscious the jury has already heard nine days of closing speeches.

So this for me is key

"The judge says the jury should consider if sub-optimal care was a factor in the collapses of the babies. He says in a few cases, it is accepted there was sub-optimal care.

He said Letby accepted herself that sub-optimal care played little or no part in most of the babies' cases."

The whole of the defence's case was that it was all down to poor care, no? And here is judge Goss helpfully reminding us that Lucy herself said that wasn't the case.... Thanks for highlighting that Mr Goss 😎

oh no how worrying for you. I’ll put behind spoiler as it’s off topic but I went through something similar.

My son wasn’t hospitalised (although GP did tell me later he was close) but everything else you described was just like my son and he had undiagnosed tongue tie for 4 weeks then the first procedure wasn’t done properly so he had his second at 7-8 weeks. By then my supply was too low. He would fall asleep because he was so exhausted from ineffective feeding. Even the head of the feeding team at the hospital missed his tongue tie !!

He needed top up feeds. I tried expressing to improve my supply but as a solo mum it became too much so I combi fed with formula instead. But I had a friend who went through something similar and she got her supply back by expressing. But with a hospital grade pump (think that is where I went wrong).

He refers to the case of Child A - the twin of Child B.

He recalls the events of their birth and the collapse.

Child A's cause of death was "unascertained".

The prosecution case is Child A did not die of any natural cause, but instead had air deliberately injected intravenously system with the intention to kill.

The defence say Letby did nothing to harm Child A, and raised issues with the long line.

I still keep thinking that this is 35th week of the trial and the 36th week when jury finally go out for deliberations. A female juror could have easily been newly pregnant around the time they were sworn in and would be due by now. It's mad when you think about it like that.

That was the bit that I said made me think the judge thinks she is guilty without actually saying it, as its essentially the whole defence case there in that one line.

I was thinking that too. Hopefully the jury will be treating it like a pregnancy; by the end you’re exhausted and just want it done, but you’re also conscious of how high the stakes are and want to see it through as safely as possible. It is, in a way, their baby. I have a lot of faith in them.

Is anyone else twitter reporting today or is it just Mark "I'm too lazy to say when there's a break or I've left for the day" Dowling?

The judge details what neonatal unit staff were recorded, and recalled, doing for Child A before the collapse.

He says there were issues siting a cannula "as can happen".

A long line was later inserted by registrar Dr David Harkness.

Nurse Melanie Taylor came on duty. Child A was "stable and satisfactory", and the nurse "had no concerns".

She ended her shift at 8pm, and handed over to the defendant, who had come in at 7.27pm.

She confirmed a 10% dextrose bag had been prescribed, to be given via the long line.

All three babies that night in room 1 required long lines - Child A, Child B and one other.

Dr Harkness was unsure if the long line was in the perfect position.

He believed it was "imperfect", but good enough to be used.

Dr Dewi Evans said the position was not a problem, and there was no evidence of the end of the line puncturing the heart lining.

He said if there was, it would show up on a post-mortem examination.

Dr Sandie Bohin said it was "not in an optimal position" but "safe to use".

Melanie Taylor said she was sitting at the computer in room 1 when Child A started to deteriorate.

The alarms sounded, and Melanie Taylor went over, thinking the baby was going to recover.

She said Letby was administering Neopuff. She says it "was a bit of a blur".

Letby said she was not initially intending to work that night shift, but was "happy to help" after being asked to work.

"There was a lot going on", and she said Melanie Taylor, "being the sterile nurse", was administering fluids.

Child A's hands and feet were "white" at the time of the desaturation - 'centrally pale and poor perfusion'.

An emergency crash call was put out.

Wonder if any of the jury members are old enough to remember that Beverly Allitt case or have had a look at her case ....the similarities are striking, in both MO and how she came across...especially to the parents, who thought she was an " angel".....judge Goss had to say his bit about her previous good character and am sure it won't makebthe slightest difference to the jury, when it comes to making their decision
