I know social media is hardly the best example of intelligence or morality but it's baffling to see people still defending him in news comments etc.

Some are blaming the crowd/liverpudlians and others are ignoring the fact the media won't share the worst of the footage so they're saying that he didn't do anything wrong, he was only driving down the street, the people shouldn't have been in the road.

Quite infuriating to read.

It's shocked me, I thought these people would have to stop after his violent past came out but we're getting handwringing on his behalf still. It's crazy. I think so much of society has completely lost any concept of what it means to have a moral centre at this point.

I also am certain that at least some of the defense of him is because it was Liverpool supports he went at. There is still so much prejudice against anything scouse out there, people are so weird about Liverpool.

At least there was a statement issued that he apologises, takes full responsibility and doesn’t expect any sympathy. No he might not mean it, but where we have killers refusing to even attend sentencing, it’s at least not an F U to victims.

He is, yes.

I was surprised it was as high as 21 years but he was all over the previous convictions and balancing the high harm/victim impact. I assume he didn't want to open the door for an 'unduly lenient' appeal, but anyone is entitled to raise it with the AG's office.

As tattle closed its doors in 2022 (due to being bored with all the bad faith new users) it doesn't suffer with that so much. Despite all the influencers influencing the media to give tattle an awful rep that doesn't match the reality.

I actually just saw a comment saying his wife must have known what kind of mood he was in so she should have done something about it.

Then another saying he was an elite marine and ADHD has a lot to answer for.

The Guardian have already got a quote from one of his ex-colleagues saying he was a lunatic with a short fuse. Unlikely he managed to hide that in his personal life.

He is likely to only serve 14 years - I think the judge was lenient.

He was going for “someone attacked me, I thought he was coming after me with a knife therefore it wasn’t my fault” even then I think. Like “I know this is awful but it wasn’t me who done it”. Playing the victim.

It's crazy, I can't even imagine the local nutters where I live doing something like this, he completely lost the plot, I hope it comes to be he'll never get to be released.

Agree with this. I know lots will think it's lenient but compared to members of child grooming gangs convicted of grape and supplying drugs who have recently got 6 years, out in 4, then it does seem measured to be final and conclusive.

The black cab rapist originally got a minimum of 8 years, not helped by the CPS massively failing victims with their cases not heard. All the victims were left in limbo for ten years and had to go through a second trial.

The people defending him likely wouldn’t be saying it if he wasn’t white - it’s all part of the same narrative. It’s why when anything like this happens the media/police are pressured into stating the skin colour of the person.

There is a serious lack of critical thinking skills in society.

All miscarriages of justice in my opinion - the sentences are appalling.

It will be today, as 24 hours has passed. For the previous two days it has been all over the news with live updates from court with the sentencing live streamed. It has not been buried.

It was top of the BBC news for the rest of the day after the sentence was passed with supporting articles about the man who stopped the car and a biography piece on Doyle just below it, not sure it gets more prominent than that?
