We are in the middle of renovating our first home, which is a dump but in an extremely sought after area which is why we decided to put the money into this one rather than one elsewhere. I cannot even begin to tell you the amount of dust and filth I am dealing with daily. How they think they will be able to live there with 3 small children within the next month, never mind week, is beyond me. It has made me ill. I clean and it is unrelenting, especially because we still don't have skirting which they don't appear to, either. We have done a lot of the same work they are doing, so I thought I would list below how much we paid and how much we were quoted for each job. We are in the Cotswolds, and the price point here is probably slightly higher than where they are.
- Full rewire of the entire house, including chasing all the walls and putting in spotlights, new fuse board, bedside lights - quoted up to £10k for the full job to the highest spec. We paid £3.2k + materials to our neighbour who is an electrician.
- Entire new heating/hot water system with new radiators - £6000.
- New kitchen - we went with Howdens and got it in the sale. We paid £3k not including appliances, plus £1800 installation. The floor is another £1400 on top. This was for the cheapest option cabinet wise and is the style that Kerry wants - Shaker but with wooden work tops. We were quoted £3k for quartz and our kitchen is probably half the size of theirs.
- House completely replastered - £5k.
- Carpentry - we haven't begun to fit skirting/doors/architraves throughout all the house except the kitchen. The kitchen alone cost £300 inc. materials.
- Decorating - we have done everything ourselves. We probably spent around £300 on paint. It all adds up.
- Flooring - we have run out of money and don't have any carpet anywhere. Living on the horrendous plaster dust covered floorboards.
- New bathroom - again, we have run out of money. To do it properly will be around £4k. We only have one bathroom.
This is only the basics. I can't imagine how much more they will be spending. They have gone about this in the most bizarre way. IF they have the amount of money to throw at this house that they appear to, then why aren't they staying in their rental house another few months until the new house is liveable?
