I have just realised who JA reminds me of! I asked Chatgpt to confirm name & details.and it is John Corcoran American high school teacher who wrote a book called The Teacher Who Couldn't Read.

He claims to have spent 17 years as a teacher whilst being illiterate and managed to pass college exams by sitting by an open window as friends whispered him the answers. He could not write, but memorised the layout of the keyboard etc etc. before learning to read and write in his late 40s.

I think JA may have borrowed from his book.

Cambridge does have a serious problem.

I was astonished by the numbers Jason Okundaye referenced in his Guardian Arday article where he said that his cohort in 2015 had 15 black males out of 3,449 matriculating students.

That is appalling and action does need to be taken. Imo the initiative by Stormzy is 72 years old is a more effective way to tackle this than hiring an academically dubious but media appealing Professor.

My Oxbridge rejects Uni many decades earlier had 3 black students (2 male) out of 50 on my course and representation was similar on Engineering courses but lower on languages.

Agreed, he's an idiot. But it also seems from his writing that although he is / was married, had two kids, was earning thousands from speaking engagements and working as a professor at prestigious universities (Glasgow and Durham) he was still living with his dear old mum (bless) in a council house in Clapham.

It is obvious to me that JA is a liar, a fabulist, and a plagiarist who has stolen many aspects of his life story from other people; some of them also liars and fabulists.

But some of the stories coming out from people claiming to be his former students I am treating with caution until there is evidence. Although it is his own fault if people believe them without question as he has stated he expects people to just believe him.

Also being backed by Zack 'I posted before chucking the facts sorry, not sorry ' Polanski probably isn't doing him any favours.

And I can't seem to find any evidence of JA being a Principal Investigator or Co Investigator on any funded projects.

For me, the biggest surprise would be if, having grifted his way to a stellar academic post off the back of plagiarism and tall tales, it turned out he was an excellent tutor who provided his students with expert guidance and seasoned insight

I think that doing the work that is required to boost representation is that it will take years/decades to improve the numbers via initiatives reaching underrepresented groups, whereas via this route (big showy appointment) Cambridge thought they'd be lauded for solving the problem, heralded as being Good People, and then patted themselves on the back without having to do any actual grassroots investment or tough work which they likely thought would be expensive and tedious and provide no instant gratification in today's very now-now-now world.

Black women are accepted in greater numbers than black males, so it can't be down to race/ethnicity alone.

I still wonder about the diagnoses he claims he received at age 3 (autism and GDD?), followed by 3-6 hours a day of speech therapy 6 days a week. That seems a little unlikely for the late 1980’s. And I don’t think there’s ever been that level of speech therapy support available on the NHS.

I’ve been wondering about this too. He’ll have family members, old acquaintances, etc., who must know that a lot of what’s been said about him isn’t true, so I’d guess he’s spun it as ‘oh, I said *this truthful bit that did actually happen*, but they’ve exaggerated it into this wild claim in order to make it more newsworthy. Bloody journalists, eh? ’
