I’m impressed by your ability to type a whole sentence whilst being high on skag and scotch, and operating the bagpipes. Now get back in your bothy and boil me a haggis. Like you do.

I hope I can make this joke if I caveat it by saying my great granny was from loon.
Excuse you

we don't boil our sacred haggis on any old day!

I don’t believe for a second the incurious fantasist ever lived in Liverpool, spent any meaningful time there whatsoever, or even spent the night there beyond maybe (generously) a handful of times if for work reasons absolutely forced to. I’m imagining his commute was similar to that of his Glasgow back and forth-into and out of the classes he was required to teach then immediately back home to London. His entire Liverpool experience was him getting from JMU to the bus station and back, probably by cab and definitely traveling there as infrequently as he could get away with. His nonsensical imaginings and stories about the good kind (and not so good and kind) simple White folk of Liverpool and their encounterings of the exotic Black fella are just testament to what an incurious, dull, often offensive self-absorbed fabulist he was.

FFS look at his “old Liverpool haunts” 🙄 View attachment 4094751
and there’s the “I lived on Penny Lane” guff. FFS. If one of his ‘I love the bands of the music of the Northwest’ bands had come from Leeds and written a bleeping song about Briggate he’d have lived on Briggate while working at Beckett and they’d have been calling the police at the shock of seeing a Black man entering a house in Leeds.

Now you’ll have to excuse me. I used to live in New York, New York (so good they named it twice) and today I’m showing my A Level English teacher around my “old haunts” Battery Park, the Tenement Museum, Studio 54 and Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square.
Sucks to be him, the Liver birds famously face in opposite directions - one out to the river and one across the city, the old joke was that’s why you never see baby liverbirds. The legend is if they looked and saw each other, they’d mate and fly away and the city would fall.

And this is very basic tit day trippers hear, how was he studying and wandering the area without knowing they don’t face the city?

I don't want to sound dramatic, but the way he spoke about Liverpool has really pissed me off.
This is a city that has one of the oldest black communities in the country, had the first British mosque, has the oldest Chinese community in Europe FFS.
Yet he speaks of us as though we've never had any experience of a well educated black man. I'm not denying that black people are woefully unrepresented in education, but I had at least a handful of black teachers when I was in school and college here.
His book smacks of someone who thinks the North is one large homogeneous mass, possibly all racists, flat cap wearing, Brexit voting, slightly unsophisticated people.
If he'd actually bothered to immerse himself in the culture of the city he lived in, he'd have realised we're massively, proudly, multicultural.
He was 41. How could he be 41, British and not know about this northern legend?

It’s in the book, and based on the utterly ludicrous story he weaves around it, including the mean examiners who didn’t make small talk before starting, it seems fairly clear he scraped it by the skin of his teeth and it remained a narc wound for him.View attachment 4094750
That chapter is in the spoiler here. It’s quite a ride.

Edit: It’s also odd as duck that a thirty year old adult man with a full-time student-facing academic job at Leeds and holding down multiple other jobs, a family (a father of two by this point), and who’d already attained multiple degrees and had (allegedly) lived in Liverpool, needed his old Sports BTEC mentor ‘father figure’ Sandro to parent chaperone him through the entire viva trip to Liverpool because “I knew couldn’t get through it without him” including Sandro driving him to Liverpool, spending every moment with him, sleeping in the same effing bedroom as him for support (allegedly in case he ‘had a seizure’ after his alleged short-term-memory-loss-causing alleged ‘brain tumor’), coming to the viva with him and sitting outside (getting there early “because Sandro didn’t want us to be late”, bestowing upon him numerous words and platitudes of wisdom throughout the visit, including, according to Arday a mid-viva pep-talk that together with memories of Giff’s words of wisdom saved the day.
I'm not sure how to put this, I don't want to come across as being a witch about aspects of his appearance and leaping to conclusions, but... His relationship with Sandro, it comes across as way more than a mentor thing.

The extracts from his book aren’t particularly challenging to read. I would say a reading age of approx. 13 could read that, and I am being generous! I have not read any of his work or watched an interview of his which shows he has the intellectual capacity for a professorship or advanced public speaking. It’s a shame he felt he had no other option but to take extreme lengths to make it end, but I honestly believe he is a narc fantasist and it was only a matter of time before he got found out.

TBH I don’t think he was wandering the city much. I think he just got back on the train to London as soon as he could.
And his description of the “sights” of Liverpool is truly pathetic. It’s just a list (which he probably googled) - has he nothing to say about these places and why he chose to show them to his friend? Some insights perhaps? Apparently not.

The more and more I read of this bizarre book, the more and more it sounds exactly like it was written by Jack munroe 😂 even the writing style is somehow similar?

But but he lived in a flat on Penny Lane! where the likes of Freddie Mercury lived in the 60s….
I suppose he wasn’t living near “Sefton Park” long enough to visit the Ghanaian food stall at the monthly Granby market, what with it being a Saturday.

It’s interesting that his PhD wasn’t about race at all but about peer mentoring in student teaching 😴 . Of the 4 students he interviewed, only one was BAME (so I assume the other 3 were white).

But at some point after that (his PhD is dated 2015), he pivoted towards race. He rode the crest of the BLM wave, moved into sociology (where he had zero experience or formal education and the jobs, accolades (5 honorary doctorates) and speaking engagements flooded in.

I've never gone to karaoke with a teacher several years older. I thought that was one of the most interesting parts of the book, when he discusses how often he was late to meet people. The first time Sandro arranges for a treat for him in town hes 1.5 hours late and Sandro storms off.
