To be honest, the racism chat is a handy distraction from the corruption of higher education for those involved and grist for those who love a public proclamation of piety.

Holding people, of all backgrounds, to account should be the bare minimum, not a gigantic fear.

I was just listening to the Storyteller podcast (highly recommend if you haven’t listened to it) and there’s a bonus episode where Isla Trequaire interviews a psychologist about narcissism and personality disorders. Go to 55 mins in this episode where he’s talking about magical thinking and embellishment, and how charm isn’t a personality but a way of trying to manipulate people. I’d very much like to know what Arday was actually diagnosed with.

I'm guessing he was a narc, but not a very malign one, and they are very common but rarely diagnosed. He saw his fake research and plagiarism as a victimless crime, so why not do it to get ahead?

To meet the clinical diagnosis for Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), a person must show at least five out of nine specific traits listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). A person does not need to have a specific set of five; any combination of five or more of the following nine traits qualifies:
    • Grandiose self-importance: An exaggerated sense of self-importance, talents, or achievements. JA ✅
    • Fantasies of success: A preoccupation with dreams of unlimited power, success, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love. JA ✅
    • Belief in being special: The conviction that they are unique and can only be understood by or associate with high-status people or places. JA ✅
    • Need for admiration: An excessive requirement for constant praise and attention. JA ✅
    • Sense of entitlement: Unreasonable expectations of special, favorable treatment or automatic compliance from others. JA ✅
    • Exploitative behavior: Taking advantage of other people to achieve their own personal goals. JA ✅
    • Lack of empathy: An unwillingness or inability to recognize and identify with the feelings and needs of others.
    • Envy of others: Being frequently envious of others or believing that other people are envious of them.
    • Arrogant attitudes: Displaying haughty, arrogant, or condescending behaviors. JA ✅
I would say he definitely displayed the first 6 traits which is enough for a narc diagnosis. Also, making up an autism diagnosis to gain special treatment is exploitative as is gaining jobs in academia based on other people's work. He also sicced police on journalists who were just doing a job, nothing illegal, which is displaying an arrogant attitude so he has 7 and maybe all of them.

His suicide showed how important the outward success was to him - he seemed to think he was nothing without it, which is sad. His fantasies came crashing down and he was unable to appreciate what he did have, 2 kids, family and friends, his health and the ability to start over albeit in a less flashy but more real way. He could even have used the infamy of exposure to rebrand himself and do mea culpa interviews where he comes clean and does a public Come to Jesus moment. I think he really just wanted to be famous and in the entertainment industry in some capacity. It would suit him better than academia.

The memoir would have had to be pulped though.

I think that people have been blinded by his 'niceness'. But once you realise that telling ppl what they want to hear is a great trait to divert attention from wrongdoing and lies, it all becomes clear. A narcissist who causes too much conflict would be easier to rumble. I wonder if his book filled with praise of his mother, wife and teachers was a nice way of buttering them up too.

Also, his claim of autism has been aided by the recategorisation of ASD such that late-diagnosed adults now carry the same diagnosis as non-verbal kids who require long-term care. None of his enablers seemed to realise that someone claiming to be a child presenting as the latter who then progressed to become one of the former is unheard of. Instead, JA had the perfect cover for his plagiarism and incompetence. Anyone questioning this is a racist and ableist.

I'm ashamed to say that I once believed that PhDs were examined to a very high standard, and that had Arday's thesis been the subject of an investigation my the university that issued it, I'd have trusted the oucome. Had Cambridge investigated the initial allegations, we'd have never known about it. Had the THE article gone ahead, I doubt it would have become mainstream news (I certainly don't read the THE), nor would we have seen the side-by-side comparisons that show that the plagiarism isn't just a AI-generated false-positive. It is terrifying to think that without Cofnas' blog being shared on social media, this story would've remained buried.

Not only did LJMU not detect that the PhD was plagiarised AND drivel, their investigation didn't either. If LJMU passed this PhD, I dread to think what dross would be allowed as part of an undergrad degree.

Given that today's young ppl face a lifetime of expensive student loans, and the wailing of academics who don't really see the problem, we really need an investigation into the academic standards within our universities.
Also- the dross which is pumped out all over the news of amazing scientific breakthroughs but it’s just a poorly-researched and badly written nothingburger with a press release

But he was never in a post long enough to supervise a whole PhD. I suspect there was quite a lot of hot potato throwing going on at previous employers
But he was an examiner for others. He was examined by others.
Those others don’t want the spotlight to creep past their toes and up to their work, either.

I’d say a vulnerable narc

I do wonder whether he did also have some kind of learning disability or neurodivergence combined with narcissism though. He’s not a “classic” one exactly, there’s some other stuff going on. Although we don’t know much, do we.

I'm wondering about borderline intellectual functioning (borderline low IQ). People with that can seem surprisingly capable on the surface, but they are constantly masking and many of them live in fear of being exposed.

Before anyone jumps at me, yes someone with borderline intellectual functioning could write a not-very-good book with the help of a ghost writer. It is surprising how intelligent some people can seem by having a confident demeanor and reciting facts or talking points that they don't really understand.

This is the thing, I could see that someone with a poor level of intellectual functioning could, with help from Giff, Slim Debs, Sandro get somewhere. Then from there you become a success story and people are handing you excuses and reasons and identities on a plate. Once you’re in the Academy you can’t really be removed, it’s no backsies, and any issues which arise get swatted away as racism, or autism.

There‘s something very unsophisticated about him (and not just in the usual “narc who doesn’t really pay attention“ way).

Oh trust me, no-one thinks the man had particularly high intellectual functioning.

Well, well, well. Cofnas' suspension has been lifted.

I wonder if the investigation into him not being the best man for the job will continue...
bleeping right wing yanks sticking their oar in, as per.
(Ambassador White promoted the conspiracy theories of Dries Van Langenhove, a far-right Belgian activist convicted of racism and Holocaust denial.)

I thought people said that ND people tend to not to be liars and con artists but it's such a broad term nowadays. As for being LD, he was able to do a fraudulent PhD with very little work, and pass the viva. That takes being able to think on your feet and a certain amount of skill as well as audacity. He had skills, just not genuine academic ones. Once someone mentions a condition though, people tend to give them the benefit of any doubt.

Genuine Asperger's can be a blessing in academic work btw. I know someone who has it who was reading at the age of 2.5 and is an incredibly prolific writer who does genuine research. Basically the opposite of JA.

Has any proof surfaced yet that he had a viva? Last I heard, no one could find out who was there and it was suggested that his PhD was waved through.

It’s said about autistic people and I’m not sure it’s 100% true.

I’m pretty sure most other types of neurodivergent people can lie, ADHD and AuDHD can blurt out the first thing which comes to mind, whether true or not. Dyslexics don’t have any sort of lie impairment, nor do Tourette’s, I’m not aware of people with a learning disability being unable to lie?

Most autistic people can lie when they need to, not always convincingly. It's not a known thing for autistic people to be fabulists, though. We like to keep things straightforward, usually.

A viva is normally a required part of a PhD. It would be highly unusual for one not to happen.

People with autism can lie, just like anyone else. The difference is that we are more likely to tell the truth because we're not following the societal 'norms' of telling little white lies, or because of a stronger-than-usual concern for fairness and justice. ETA: also what @CarmenGhia said above!

I think there's a growing divergence from this though, IMO largely because there are people who are misdiagnosed as autistic and there are people with 'caughtism'. I don't know if there's any data on autism and personality disorder comorbidity, but then someone with a PD is more likely to lie about having autism anyway.

I imagine that someone would have to have a significant brain impairment to be absolutely incapable of lying at all*. If I'm remembering correctly, our brains don't really 'like' doing it, which is why people usually end up telling on themselves - with words and/or body language.

*How many pet owners have returned home to find utter chaos and destruction, and Fido or Tiddles sat in the middle of it with an angelic, innocent expression that says, "OMG someone must have broken in while I was writing my PhD thesis using the litter tray! It definitely wasn't me..."
