I don't recall this being posted yesterday, but this article makes the (ridiculous) point that George Harrison, Manet and Charles Darwin were 'plagiarists' too!

Those bloody Beatles. Not an original song between them. And Paul was dead all along. Can't believe they got away with building their whole career on lies.

As evidenced in Darwin’s great thesis “Erm umm well monkeys right so umm evolution well anyway enough about that, yesterday everyone told me how great I am”

Or in that Beatles classic: “Something in the way she moves / Attracts me like no other lover / But enough about that / I’m absolutely brilliant aren’t I?”

and of course, Manet’s famous “A Bouquet of Flowers (bought for me because I’m the bestest)”

mats.

Taking inspiration from/reinterpreting/referencing/expanding upon previous works is not plagiarism.

Arday wasn't doing any of those things, he appears to have copied pretty long passages of someone else's work for his own allegedly original PhD dissertation, and also seems to have entirely fabricated research.

The knots people are tying themselves in are ridiculous.

“My view is that the essence of the book is the essence of the book. I haven’t read it, but I know people who have that have found it incredibly moving and very inspiring.”
Wow. Profound. The essence of the book is the essence of the book. I can see how Pringle was a luminary in the publishing world 😂
So many people still carrying water for JA even though it's a lost cause at this point. She also doesn't seem to know what a memoir is - non-fiction. It's like the media hooha over The Salt Path never happened, but then again, they were white.

If Jason Arday wasn’t a real person, I’m not sure even Dr Seuss could invent him.

Exactly!
I have a BA and an MA and it's drilled into students not to plagiarise and how to avoid it by citing and quoting correctly.
A First Year student might make genuine mistakes but once you get into the habit of it, it's not that difficult to cite correctly.
By PhD level it should be second nature, and there's just no excuse.
I can't understand how Liverpool John Moores stood by Arday's PhD once the plagiarism came to light, except I suppose it's embarrassing for them to admit they were wrong.

It would open a can of worms. JA can't be the only one who did this (although he probably took it farther than most) and if it's known how sloppy the standards are then it devalues those who did honest work as well as the entire university itself. Universities are big business and it's bad for business.

I'm ashamed to say that I once believed that PhDs were examined to a very high standard, and that had Arday's thesis been the subject of an investigation my the university that issued it, I'd have trusted the oucome. Had Cambridge investigated the initial allegations, we'd have never known about it. Had the THE article gone ahead, I doubt it would have become mainstream news (I certainly don't read the THE), nor would we have seen the side-by-side comparisons that show that the plagiarism isn't just a AI-generated false-positive. It is terrifying to think that without Cofnas' blog being shared on social media, this story would've remained buried.

Not only did LJMU not detect that the PhD was plagiarised AND drivel, their investigation didn't either. If LJMU passed this PhD, I dread to think what dross would be allowed as part of an undergrad degree.

Given that today's young ppl face a lifetime of expensive student loans, and the wailing of academics who don't really see the problem, we really need an investigation into the academic standards within our universities.

Isn't a uni investigating their own standards the same as a kid marking their own homework? Surprise, surprise, they don't find anything wrong.

I would think of a memoir as well from a research perspective to be the primary source and usually taken as fact unless disproven in case of a conflict with a source like a biography

I know that PhDs have external examiners, which means that a dodgy PhD exposes the rot in other universities too. Arday's appointments were approved by ppl from outside the university. Arday was an examiner of other ppl's PhD.

I think this is why noone wants to look to closely and would rather portray this scandal as a 'culture war'.

But he was never in a post long enough to supervise a whole PhD. I suspect there was quite a lot of hot potato throwing going on at previous employers

Yes and I bet they couldn’t wait to wave him off once he got another post. It’s not unusual for incompetent people to be promoted out of the classroom in teaching. I imagine it’s the same in academia.

I've just seen a tweet that points out that the journalist who wrote this for The Voice 'in a personal capacity' is actually the Head of Communications and PR at Homerton College, Cambridge- a college that used to only be for those studying education. In it, he claims that too many Black journalists joined the pile-on without wondering whether what Arday said could be true.

I immediately thought of Lanre Bakare, the black journalist from the Guardian who did an amazing job after considering whether Arday's tales might not be true, and went and checked.

It's yet ANOTHER article that waffles on about how something JA said could be true, rather than concentrate on the stuff, reported by a black journalist, that definitely wasn't.

He was also involved with Operation Black Vote & Runnymede Trust as was Arday & Lord Woolley.

Some shameful hooks in that article. To catch him by his toe is a reference to a racist children's rhyme.

The carefully juxtaposed "I am not claiming every word he said was 100% accurate".

Arday's supporters are centring the autism to explain anything problematic in JA's story. Why then should there be any expectation of privacy in respect of this diagnosis?
