The thing that always sets my Billy buller radar off overwhelmingly is when people can remember monologues of conversation weeks and years after the fact. I consider myself to have a good memory which is backed up academically and socially, but I genuinely can’t remember everyday, nay, even important conversations much past a sentence or two or beyond the main point. Having read the excerpts of the book, Jason seems to manage to remember all and every conversation. I’ve seen this done in several memoirs and it always sets my radar off.

Ehhhhh. Memoirs usually have a caveat that conversations are recreated to be representative or illustrative of what happened, not necessarily word-for-word accurate.

That said, his massive ego probably remembers every eulogistic remark or prophecy aimed at him.

I see the woman who plays Denise in EastEnders is the latest zeleb to do a teary to camera piece haranguing the media for daring to expect academics be honest about their credentials.

Do all these handwringing non-entities realise they’re perpetuating the burden of low expectations placed on black people in academia?

So true, its like when people lie generally and add wat too much detail into a story that they think makes it seem more realistic but in reality just makes it less so

Oh me too. I said it on one of the previous threads. There's no way anyone remembers full conversations verbatim.

Sets my eyes rolling straightaway, a bit like various threads on Mumsnet where they reproduce conversations line by tedious line. I immediately think - bull.

At 7:25, he says "I don't have any skill. But what I do have is an indomnitable will." Jeez. You can even see his eyes look so... haunted? dead? after he says he has no skill. Then he puts the mask on again and starts being animated once again.

He did the same in his acceptance speech at st Mary’s (when he was given an honorary doctorate )

There‘s a page now set up for good memories. The overwhelming thing that people say is that he was kind.

I was lucky enough to be taught by some absolutely brilliant lecturers and academics. Some were kinder to me than others. The ones who really made a difference were the ones who pushed me to push myself harder though. Kindness is not the key quality you need in education.

A good looking guy (at least before the eyeliner and perpetual shine), he absolutely was. But listening to him speak... I'm not charmed so much as I want to crawl up my own hoop to escape the sensation of watching someone humiliate themselves.

I never met him but have a few colleagues who worked quite closely with him. In fact, on Friday I had a long conversation with one who had known him in pre-Cambridge days and saw him for coffee just after his final interview.

Her view was that he seemed like a 'nice guy' but that she was shocked her was offred the role, especially since she knew other candidates in the running.

She also commented that the subsequent adulation of students and other staff led to this 'rock star' persona, he would give talks at events and people would crowd around the stage hoping to speak to him!

It's interesting (well, not really) that pretty much every conversation was in praise of him, and how utterly amazing he was. From the moment he was born...

I see a lot of ‘things you can do to support JA’s memory’ and one of them is pre-ordering his book. I wonder if the mainstream mood will change after it is read by so many of his supporters?

I wonder once the book is more widely read and available. The narrative will shift from ‘he was an angel and anyone who criticised him killed him’ to ‘there’s enough truth in there to believe what he says as his truth’ and play up the alleged neurodiversity angle.

In the first thread I think it was mentioned that ‘ once the guardian went against him he was ducked’ (I may be paraphrasing) it’s a view I certainly read across a few places.
Unsurprisingly the ghoul Joylon went for the Guardian for their “hounding “, here is the Guardian’s response.

I shows that rather than the hounding narrative Jason was the first to approach the Guardian.
His main error was he thought the Guardian would just publish anything he said rather than check its validity.
Which makes sense to a degree since his career so far had gone manly unchallenged.
