Some people in the media and on here need to take a long hard look at themselves. The level of hounding and criticism he faced was wild. Anyone with half a brain cell can see there are many other white, middle class men who have done far worse and nobody batted an eyelid.

Perhaps those now claiming to be sorry can set up a go fund me for his two young kids who are now orphans.

I'm very sorry that someone has lost their life, that's awful. Especially as he has children.
However as the survivor of narcissistic abuse i have educated myself over the past few years. Threatening to take your life and actually taking your own life are the tools of a narcissist. Dying by your own hand is the ultimate 'win' for a narcissist. You can't try and justify or understand it if you don't have the experience.
Their brains aren't wired normally. To be dead and make others look bad is just one example how they 'win'. It's why estranged parents kill their children to spite the other parent.
I'm not sorry about anything I've posted on here. I have only ever mocked obvious bull, which is what I believe everyone else has done.
All we have done is called out the lies of an obvious fantasist. No one on here needs to feel bad about anything.

I hear you. Narcissistic collapse (I think they call it) is when a narcissist is no longer able to maintain their projected image of themselves, whether due to criticism, shame or being exposed - ridicule in particular (narcs take themselves incredibly seriously) - and a breakdown of some kind ensues. I’ve seen it in a close family member, and I think that’s what’s happened here.

There were two aspects to Jason’s downfall, I guess. One was the plagiarism and the academic side - the plagiarism itself, the inflated CV, dodgy hirings etc. The other was the whole fantasy life that he had constructed, which fell apart under the mildest scrutiny. If it were not for the fantasy life, I don’t think the story would have attracted as much attention (plagiarism / academia is too dry by itself for most people). And most people with a fantasy life (and there are plenty of them around - I think we all know people like this, I certainly do) don’t actually end up being exposed like Jason was. In normal life, these people just end up being ignored, or people just roll their eyes when they tell another tall story. Everyone knows what they’re like. And for what it’s worth, I think Jason’s family must have known to some extent - how could they not?

I suspect the last straw might have been that people from his childhood were starting to talk. That was the last piece in the house of cards.

Cambridge has a lot to answer for too. Universities these days usually have departments which offer mental health support to students (as part of their duty of care) - you’d think the same would be the case for academics, particularly if they are on suspension or undergoing review. So I wonder if they offered this sort of support to him.

Seconded. I think the only thing to be said on this particular thread now is that someone has lost their life. A father, son, partner, brother & friend. That is a tragedy.

Well whoever this woman is, and I do know her to be a detractor of this particular forum, then may I point out that she’s doing exactly what she’s complaining others are doing, which is speculating and adding to the conversation. She really shouldn’t be making herself a martyr, if she is judging other people by these standards, and then flouting them herself.

I've just seen the news. It's very shocking, but at the same time, quite expected. In these kinds of situations, with severe narcissists, it seems 50/50 whether they will commit suicide or come out completely unscathed with a new grift. As horrifying as it is when anyone does this (especially given his age and that he has children), suicides like this are methods of manipulation and abuse - a way of going, "Look what you made me do. How dare you tell the truth about me?"

My ex was "suicidal" any time anyone pointed out that he had lied or been abusive in any way. So this hits home, because I often wonder if he will really do it one day. In a way I feel genuinely guilty because I watched so many YouTube videos laughing at this guy and lamenting what has happened to academia if he could be elected. Then in another way, I think that we can't avoid holding people accountable for their actions on the off chance they will kill themselves. While mental health can spiral quickly, this was not something that would have been done by an otherwise normal person in these circumstances: most people when caught in a lie, even losing their job, could have the honest self reflection to say, "Yes, I lied. I did it because I wanted to feel like I was that person who achieved all those things. I'm sorry." But to a narcissist, admitting that they were wrong is literally worse than death.

I hope this doesn't stop the reviews into why a substandard, cheating academic was hired for a professorship, or why the publishers of his biography did no fact checking.

What a repulsive yet unsurprising reaction from the utter narcissist! She’s only saying that in the hopes nobody ever publicly exposes all her bull.

Like many others I audibly gasped too when the news broke.

I do think there has been excessive news coverage and reporting on Jason which is (as much as some may not like and will jump to disagree with but you can kiss my a) down to racism and right-wing media jumping all over it. Two things can be true at once - he can have done wrong and the media have villainised and bullied him excessively.

I feel so sorry for his family and friends.

Canbridge University and the other institutions and individuals along the way that enabled him and didn’t do even the most basic sanity checks have some serious questions to answer, and the spotlight needs to be even more firmly on them now. None of this #BeKind tit letting them off from any investigations into what theyve caused here.

Not to mention the people editing his book? Who on earth could read that and think it eas anything other than the ramblings of someone basically totally detached from reality?

I’m moving on from being annoyed about the marathon story onto the neurodiversity claims.

I‘m not an academic. But I’m a runner and I’m a parent of an autistic child who has really bleeping struggled to access education. Aand that’s why this part of his ‘story’ really enrages me.

So I’ve sort of done the marathon lie (I can bore you more about how fantastical it is but it’s so boring!) but the ND tit really grinds my gears on a lot of levels (some is stuff I’ve said before) so I want to put it all in one place to explain how harmful it is:

• He says that he was diagnosed with Asperger’s and global development delay at the age of 3. While Asperger’s is no longer a DX, very few kids were ever dxed with it at such a young age.
• NO ONE is ever diagnosed with GDD - which means that you’re behind in lots of different areas - and Asperger’s at the same time. Asperger’s literally means you have autism but it’s not impacting you intellectually. Which is the opposite of a GDD DX.
• He says he smeared his tit on the walls. If you do that, you don’t get an Asperger’s DX.
• He says he was non verbal until he was 11 and had hours of daily speech therapy. His SALT became so frustrated with him that she assaulted him. If his mum took him as he says, she’d be in the room. Interventions outside of school, the parent is always in the room
• His mum fought for him to leave the special school he’d been put in so that he could achieve his full potential in mainstream school. I’m not disbelieving this but it makes me really bleeping angry. Councils are savagely cutting SEN provision and for so many of our kids, a specialist setting is the only place where they can thrive and even access education at all. His take that all kids need is a parent who really loves and advocates for them and then they’ll flourish in MS education is a Reform wet dream.

I know that you know this, but just to add on: no non-verbal person was ever diagnosed with Asperger's. Being verbal was the big thing that set the autism/Asperger diagnoses apart in those days.

Personally, I just do not believe he was autistic, because he was so deceitful and Machiavellian. Those aren't really present in genuinely autistic people, even when very high functioning.

Cambridge Uni should probably have had a duty of care towards him following the revelations and his resignation.

I understand that being made to confront his plagiarism and lies may have contributed to his decision, but I don’t want to live in a world where we can’t call bullshitters and scammers out for fear of what they may subsequently do.

Absolutely tragic all round. A house of cards that very suddenly came crashing down all around Jason Arday. So many people in this day and age, aided by social media, are able to weave a web of lies and build an identity around them. Slightly different for Arday, as he was able to gain access to academia, and because he was black, and was seen as having overcome tremendous obstacles, he was paraded as someone truly special by the institutions who used him for their own agendas. In doing so, they were judging him on Race every bit as much as the usual suspects who cannot countenance a non white person in any kind of high office.
JA must have felt humiliated and cornered, unable to see a way through the mess and mire. It has seemed that he's received more media attention than others who have been grossly over promoted, and a lot of that attention has issued from people with a very particular agenda. Scrutiny was necessary, and reportage should obviously have reflected that; the blame, however, for the whole mess lies firmly with the institutions, particularly Cambridge, and the publishers, who saw Arday as good publicity and a moneymaker. I suspect the publishers hoped that US names like Oprah Winfrey would platform him and ensure very healthy booksales.They should be ashamed of themselves, and they should not be allowed to walk away from the tragic way this situation has unfolded.
My heart breaks for his poor children, and the rest of his family. I know what it is to lose parents young and in a violent way, and it leads to lifelong trauma.
This situation must not be fobbed off with the usual get out clause of 'lessons will be learned'. Many people/institutions/systems need to be looked at forensically, and there should be accountability. No doubt though that sites like tattle will be used as a convenient scapegoat.
I don't believe in life after death, but his turmoil is now over; it's just tragic that he felt he couldn't see this period through, goodness knows many guiltier of much worse than this have brazened out the scandal and notoriety. Sadly, the turmoil for his children is just beginning.

He's no victim. Other than his family and friends obviously, my sympathies in this whole tragic affair go to those whose lives he ruined via his teaching and mentoring, those whose PhDs are worthless or at least questionable due to his involvement, those more deserving and qualified whose careers he ruined by taking opportunities away from, those he threatened by playing the race card, those with autistic/non verbal kids that he gave hope to, and such many more.

He and (maybe especially, to be fair) his enablers are to blame for this whole mess, not those who called him out and exposed him.

Cambridge have an awful lot to answer for. This wasn't a nice little job anyone could have walked into, it was a position that attracted incredible status and prestige and the wild claims about his personal life were presented as part of the reason he was so exceptional.

If the fella you work with at Tesco tells you he's raised £5million for charity, been a professional sportsperson in not one but two sports, is an elite long-distance runner even with a broken leg and so on and so forth, that's primarily an issue between him and reality. His employer would have neither reason nor entitlement to audit his entire personal mythology.

But when an institution appoints somebody to a prestigious role and then actively promotes extraordinary childhood adversity, exceptional charitable achievements and sporting accomplishments, inspirational overcoming of disability, prestigious academic achievements and associations and an exceptional career trajectory... They're not just stories the employee tells at the pub. The institution itself is holding them up as reasons this person is noteworthy.

And there's a reciprocal part of holding a prestigious public position. You receive things ordinary employees don't. Authority, credibility, public platforms, invitations, awards, media interest and the reflected status and prestige of the institution's name. In return, there should be higher expectations concerning integrity, honesty and public conduct. And ultimately if you're willing to accept the many perks of mythologising yourself, the other side of that coin is that the scrutiny will be proportionate to that praise when it all goes wrong.

The public wouldn't have given a tit if it was just the academic stuff. Half of Oxbridge are there for little more reason than a name and a family tree. If anything I'd have been celebrating Jason for excelling at the very thing that's been rife in these institutions since the dawn of time but I don't understand why nothing is ever enough.
