Just to point out, he may have expected to be found before it was too late. We will likely never know, and shouldn't, really.

The publishers should really not have gone ahead with publishing the book. Everything was bad enough for him already.
Don't beat yourself up, he will have been facing very serious conversations with Cambridge, his publisher, and then conversations with his family. Nothing said here will have been anywhere near as overwhelming as that.

But you can be critical of people and still never wish any harm on them (a fact Tattle critics never can seem to grasp). It was probably the resigning/being pushed from Cambridge that was the main factor.

Yes, he has been backed into a corner through his own actions but also because of the lack of scrutiny from the institutions that employed him.
His whole persona that he carefully crafted over years has been decimated, it’s a tragic situation but I will strongly oppose anyone who claims this is because of social media.

Cambridge and other institutions still need to face the music though. Lies and fraud were committed, other genuine candidates usurped to promote an unqualified liar, etc. Excessive institutional fawning over someone without the talent to deserve it, etc.

But with the media as it is, the people who questioned his abilities and lies will now be vilified and his lies will be drowned out.
What a sad state of affairs.
Living a life of lies must be such a burden on the mind, so in a way, I'm not surprised. I still stand by our valid criticisms but this is not how anyone wanted things to happen. We wanted accountability. But this is terrible news.

As a long time contributor to the Jack Monroe threads during the very worst of her Walter Mitty crises, I have to confess this was an outcome I sometimes feared.
Assuming what happened is what we’re all assuming; I have an immediate family member who made three separate attempts in 2024, one of which was within minutes of succeeding. Their illness was so entrenched they were impervious to any outside influence.

It’s absolutely tragic but I don’t feel surprised. The attention on this story was so intense (perhaps because it’s silly season).
I know this sounds odd but I’m not sure he thought he had lied. By all accounts other academics at Cambridge and previous institutions treated him as some sort of messiah. An academic on twitter said a few days ago he was a nice guy but was just so weird how in thrall to him other academics were.
I think he could do no wrong and it probs did feel to him that he was going through life ‘manifesting’ a PhD, academic career etc. and it was all just meant to be.

Yes. Once again, very little attention will be paid to the role of the deceased.
Hugely, hugely sad. Nobody wanted this. The people and professional bodies who should have guided him, protected him and mentored him let him down just because they put their own esteem and high standing above that of somebody who was no more than a disposable avatar for them to feel good about themselves and project good about their institutions. I hope he is now at peace.

He obviously knew when he was making thousands of pounds from public speaking engagements I don’t think he was naive at all.
