what has jade done? i'm a little behind on her thread, sorry!!
She's been traveling all over the place, breaking COVID restrictions in multiple countries. She's now is in quarantine in South Korea after arriving only a few days ago. She's claiming that she has to be in SK for Minerva, otherwise the time difference is too difficult to manage. Many people are now calling her out in the comments sections of her videos for traveling during a pandemic, and she's been deleting as many negative comments as she can.

Hi guys, I've been watching Jack on and off for a few years, mostly just to see what he's up to.

Sorry if this is obvious or has been mentioned before, but does anyone know if he has any plans for a master's? Has he a confirmed place anywhere? Is he reapplying for Oxford? Abandoned the whole idea and now job searching (that's the idea I get from his tweets but I rewatched his Oxford masters rejection video last night and he seemed to say he was going to apply again!)?

I don't think he's said really, but he wanted to live abroad this year so I think that's what he's planning next year.

In the last life update video he made he basically said he is no rush to apply for a masters and wants to work/travel for a bit.

But I’d be surprised if he hasn’t applied for Oxford again this cycle; it’s so competitive and he always says it’s his dream course so would’ve thought he would try to maximise his chances of getting in. And he wouldn’t start til October so he’d still have time to work for a bit.

Not sure if it was on this thread or someone else‘s
but didn‘t someone who works in admissions say that re-applying over and over again does not sit well with colleges and won‘t increase your chances of getting in?
If that‘s true then hopefully Jack will focus on getting some experience and then re-apply in a few year when he has enhanced his CV.

I haven't heard this, I wouldn't agree with who said that. Graduate admissions at Oxford aren't conducted by colleges like they are for undergrad, they're controlled by the subject faculty.

You obviously shouldn't apply with the exact same application (you were rejected for a reason), but if you apply again in a new admissions cycle with an improved application you aren't going to get a black mark on your form just because you applied the year before. There's not a mechanism in place that flags re-applicants, unless the person reading your application happened to remember you from the year before. And even then, definitely no frowning - they probably won't even remember you, and in even if they do, they know that people can improve! e.g. say an applicant was rejected because their research proposal wasn't up to standard but they re-applied the next year with a watertight research proposal - the fact that they were rejected the year before wouldn't be frowned upon. It's based on the individual merit of the application.

In his last Q&A video he said that he had applied to Oxford again (as well as other places which he didn't specifically name), but he said in a later more recent video that he still wants to go to the USA to do that screen-writing course, so I don't know if he'll simply wait until COVID has been managed to go straight away, or if he'll go after his masters. Goodness knows if he's had any decisions back yet, or whether he'll ever mention it if he does. He only seems to be talking about 'dream job' interviews at the moment, which he doesn't mention again either (i.e. he wasn't successful).

It wasn't me that said it but I did agree (worked in admissions for years), reapplying again isn't a good look, unless (as stated) you have actively done something to improve on your last application. Just reapplying without improving yourself/your application will not do you any favours.

I can't speak for Oxford but yes university systems do match previous records as it picks up names and date of births and merge. Well some do anyway. Again I can't speak for Oxford.

And in some instances names and circumstances are most certainly remembered.

Yeah I'm just talking about Oxford, other universities may have flagging systems which do pick out students who have been rejected in the past but Oxford doesn't have any system like that. And of course I agree that re-applying with the exact same application is not advisable in any circumstances! But at least in the Oxford admissions system, a re-application in itself is not a bad thing and there's no formal (or informal) policy to treat re-applicants differently. Especially as re-applying is a lot more common at the postgrad level so isn't unusual; by and large your chances are higher applying postgrad compared to undergrad.

I'd like to see him get into some PG programme, not necessarily Oxford. I've followed these guys for years - like many of you, and for all their faults, I'd like to see them get settled a bit.

Oxford reject you for a reason, it’s not always a try again and you’ll get in, they already know what type of candidates they want!

Not what I'm saying at all! Of course you can't send in the same application and expect to get in, but plenty of people re-apply and get admitted because they improved their application (whether that's through submitting a better proposal, getting more professional experience, better references). Of course re-applying doesn't mean you'll get in second time around, but I'm just trying to say there's no black mark on re-applicant. I'm speaking on it because I'm involved in the process haha.

Does Oxford not use Banner then? It’s fairly common in University admissions and would match applicants on names and DOB. Sorry if you don’t know, it just seemed like you might.

I know someone who reapplied for my course and got in - we're both nearly finished. So if you do something different the second time around, are more prepared for interviews etc there's still a chance for you. But you're right, and I think Jade would be a good example of that. I don't think she'd ever have really enjoyed Oxford - both in terms of the way the courses are taught and assessed, but mostly because I just can't see her there. She fits in well with the modern university-silicon valley-life and I see Jack as the same. Fair enough if he can see himself at Oxford, I just think he'd enjoy somewhere else more.

to be fair I think he would enjoy Oxford. I was in his year group at Durham and saw him a fair bit on college/formal/society events in college bars and on nights out - I think the university style of Durham/Cambridge/Oxford suits him quite well, and he seems to cope fine with the workload etc

You can tell he's really lost at the moment, due to the lack of content and 'life updates'. If only he'd applied to more than just Oxford last year...

Man, I'm sure I've said it before but it's genuinely sad he is so set on Oxford. Whatever was weak about his application last year, there's not much he could have done for this year or next year to really improve it because the opportunities don't seem to be there at all - assuming he will be applying again that is.

On the subject of that, I can't really see him at Oxford. He seems to lack passion for his course.

This is what I can't understand either. If he applied with a predicted first, and now has that first (by the skin of his teeth I might add), then literally nothing will have changed about his application.

I wonder why he actually wants to do a masters degree - because studying is a massive part of his brand? Because he wants to prolong entering work for as long as possible?

I think a lot of these studytubers will do masters just to prolong their YouTube careers tbh.
