I am bleeping fuming. There's a debate on Facebook about JKR and someone said they can still enjoy Harry Potter because they can separate the art from the artist, in the same way that they still like Roman Polanski's film. How is JK defending women in any way comparable to Polanski? I am seriously fed up. Oh and of course this was from a straight man who is blissfully unaware of the nuances of this debate. I know because he told me a few weeks back he didn't really know enough about it
I'm getting really pissed off with that on Twitter too. I saw a white guy yesterday climb down publicly from slating JK, saying he hadn't read enough or her essay at all. And while I'm glad he at least has the humility to do that, I feel like we really need to normalise the idea of not just running your mouth about something you know nothing about. There is nothing wrong with saying or thinking 'actually I don't know enough about this to have an opinion yet' and just shutting the duck up.

Exactly, it's all knee jerk BS. "Such and such said she's a transphobe so she must be". What happened to critical thinking?

It seems too many people can’t think for themselves but immediately jump on the bandwagon others are riding.

I have had enough of trying to even debate it while trying to use words that might cause offence. I really don’t care anymore who I hurt with my words. It’s getting beyond a joke. The more I read the angrier I get.

It's deliberate to make it easier to attack. If you didn't know anything about this and went to social media, what would you see? All the loud TRAs screeching about JK being transphobic, JK hates trans people, I even saw a Tweet the other day saying 'JK is directly advocating for the torture and death of trans people.' And this mimics what abusive men do to women all the time; you express a problem with something they've said to you or how they've treated you, they minimise it as best they can to something that doesn't reflect the issue, because it's easier to attack. For example, say you have an abusive partner who openly flirts with other women in front of your face (using my own anecdote here). Instead of dealing with the issue - they're treating you badly and you don't like it - they say something like 'wow, you're so jealous! You won't even let me have female friends!' because that idea is something that's much easier for them to criticise and put the blame back on you. And there is so much of this going on in this whole thing, it's almost laughable that this 'discussion' so obviously mimics the gaslighting of women in general that it's no surprise really much of the dialogue can be characterised in the same way. It's male activism for male rights and burn at the stake anyone who disagrees (women).

@DanaScully welcome! Thank you for posting. Lesbians definitely seem to be forgotten about in all of this. I remember reading one of the Guardian blind dates where a lesbian was set up with a trans woman. Obviously she didn't take it further but the trans woman tweeted relentlessly about how she was a transphobe and so on. She had to make her Twitter private in the end
Thank you! Yes I remember that case, and it's one case of many I've heard of where trans women haven't disclosed they are trans to someone they've arranged a date with because they don't feel they have to.

To me this is straight up deception and coercion, pushing lesbians into a scenario whereby if they dare to dissent they are radical and transphobic and not a valid member of the community. We are literally being pushed out and shouted over by the trans lobby.

Also certain lesbian dating websites and apps are banning lesbians who include a disclaimer on their profile that they are only interested in females for the reason of "transphobia". Note that J. Yaniv is on the app 'Her' without any mention of being trans, and apparently that's a-ok.

I could go on and on. It all feels unbelievable, but it's so very real.

This is just a nightmare. How are companies getting away with firing/ disciplining employees for personal beliefs? Is it in their company handbooks that people should not believe a certain thing?

I imagine it's largely just that they're too scared of being 'cancelled' over keeping an employee with an ~ unpopular opinion but this is surely contravening that employee's Article 9 ECHR right

It’s not even an opinion or a belief. It’s a scientific fact that trans women are biologically men and trans men are biological women. It’s us that are being asked to go along with ‘beliefs’ and airy fairy nonsense in case it gives someone the ‘hurty feels’. If you ask me to use a pronoun different to the evidence that’s in front of my eyes, I will do so out of politeness. But ‘woman’ is not a feeling, neither is it the way you dress or how long you grow your hair.

It’s absolutely astounding that it’s got this far, but I think the vast majority (if they read any of JK’s writing on this) would actually agree with what she’s said. Policy makers should start remembering that Twitter does not equal the real world. And the more stuff that comes out about this, the more people are going to peak trans.

I fully agree. It's not really a belief as such, I was just searching for the right word in this context. But yes, you now face disciplinary action or dismissal for believing in scientific facts

Oh I totally agree it's a fact of course, I'm just pre-empting that the other side will say it isn't a fact and is some kind of belief/concept, but even if that were the case that ought to be covered by Art 9.

However I've just seen news of a case today at the ECtHR regarding whether Bulgaria has interfered with someone's Article 8 rights in refusing to allow their sex to be changed on the civil registers. Haven't read the full judgment yet, but people are saying the Court discussed and dismissed gender critical views. So doesn't seem like the ECHR would help these employees anyway if that's what they think.

‘Absolute terf’ I mean there could be worse things. Could be a weirdo, a murderer, or a violent man in a women’s prison who rapes female inmates, or a man who demands female only beauty salons wax his balls, or a man taking a place on a women’s sports team or a man who uses grape threats to silence women. Yep, definitely worse things in the world than being an ‘absolute terf’ at this point.

Yeah so true. TRAs bandy this term about as if it's the ultimate insult but you know what, they can call us TERFs all they want. It's certainly all they've got in the absence of logic and fact

They can buy me a TERF badge and I’ll wear it on my coat if they want to spread the term that much. It’s funny, imagine being *that* person whose only contribution to a forum is to call someone a little name made up by a bunch of extremists.

TERF always makes me laugh because it doesn't even make sense as a slur. All big radical feminist thinkers include transmen in their feminism because they are biologically women. So what these people mean is our feminism includes the wrong type of trans in that it doesn't include transwomen, aka biological men. People love to bandy around 'TERF' but they're basically just exposing to everyone that they haven't actually read any radfem work. Like the other week when Philip Pullman tried to use Simone de Beauvoir's quote about becoming female to back up his TRA crap. Lmao.

Or a ‘trans woman‘ who encourages their disciples to talk about slitting a ‘Terfs’ throat online all because she’s a lesbian and didn’t want to play with a pen.

I've been in this rabbit hole for a while now and at this point I see TERF as a badge of honour. Much like "anti-fascist" or something
