I think the alleged anti-Semitism is to do with the goblins in Gringott’s Bank supposedly reading as Jewish - because money and hooked noses.

You could argue that jumping to such a conclusion says more about you than JKR, surely?
I think a lot of the accusations of racism comes from stuff that's not actually in the books - e.g. Lavender Brown being played by a Black girl in the earlier movies and re-cast as white once she got a bigger role, or JKR making up a culturally ignorant mythos around Native American wizards. These are worthy of criticism but they don't involve the content of the books ...

They're trying to make it seem that women are jealous of trans women. Everyone knows that that is not true.
Oh yes I as a "breeder" am just drowning in privilege. That time as a little girl I was sexually abused, privilege. That time I was date raped in college, privilege. When these assaults were reported, being questioned about what I did to bring them on myself, privilege. Everytime some bloke has staggered up to me to make sexual comments, privilege. Not being able to safely walk about on my own in certain areas, privilege. The fact I earn less than men for the same job, privilege. Diseases that I am at risk of because of my biological sex, privilege. The fact I am risk physically as I am smaller and weaker than most as a 5 ft 3 woman, privilege. The fact is was not inlegal for a man to rape his wife until 1992 in my country, the first prosecution in 2002, privilege. Now my country , Ireland, has made it legal for any bloke to say he is a woman,, no hormones no surgery no questions asked with two of these men housed in a womans prison today, privilege. The highest rate of VAT applied to feminine hygiene products, privilege. Paying 55 quid for a dr visit to get a prescription (30 quid for the pills for three months)for the pill so I can work and live without crippling period pain, privilege. Meanwhile limpdick Larry can get his Viagra over the counter at Boots so he can leave his wife dissatisfied on the cheap. The fact that our health service removed the word "woman" from cervical cancer screening literature while still covering up the deaths of women told they were cancer free when in fact they were given the wrong test results, privilege. The fact is these Berks haven't got the testicular fortitude to be a woman in this world. GTFO with their nonsense of "cis privilege"

To add to my rant the two self identified "women" housed in the women's prison, well one has ten convictions for sexually assaulting women and one for assault of a child. The second person has threatened to murder women, attacked several women, tore the eyelids off of a social worker caring for them and his own mother has been in hiding due to credible threats to kill her. This person was also sent to the Tavistock clinic to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria but the specialists there said he was not dysphoric just a danger to women and our courts placed him in women's prison on the guys say so. So much privilege.

This. ❤ Anyone who says 'cis' ( 🤢) women have privilege can get in the bin/trash.

"Earn womanhood" :sick::sick::sick:
This kind of thinking will be the new religious fanaticism of this decade. Nothing against religion per se, but the extreme kind...

👏 well said. I too have experienced many of those 'privileges' including being groped in bars in my youth, being date raped as a teenager, being dismissed by employers when I raised concerns about men making inappropriate sexual remarks and being paid less than male colleagues for doing the same job.

We've made strides forward in terms of equality since the 1980s but now we are going backwards again and a lot of younger women don't seem to realise what sort of harassment women have faced and they want to wipe it all out to appease a group of men. I despair. 🤦‍♀️

I find it absolutely bloody hilarious how desperate men are to find a way to claim they’re oppressed. Like I honestly laughed out loud reading this. ‘Cisnormative’ society incorporates patriarchy...it’s because we are ‘cis’ women that we are in many ways disadvantaged. But sure, all these weird 30 year old men who have had all the advantages their whole lives of being white men in society (why are they always white?) now want to cry about being oppressed because they’re ‘trans’...give me a bleeping break

I think it's partly because they don't listen to women/think we're real people. They might have had 30 years of hearing us talk about our oppression, but they didn't think it was real, actual people who were talking, and even if they did, they didn't listen.

Agree with this, for a certain type women are support humans to make their lives easier so we are either mummy coddling over their little soldier or we are an assembly of holes to screw like the online porn stars they sit and watch, but we are never fully functional people with our own needs, wants and boundaries.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m so sick of this tit. I work in the NHS and people are already tiptoeing around this, putting their pronouns on their email signature and tit! Hilarious at times!

Pronouns are starting to creep into my work too. It is bonkers, you have a section of t'internet screaming about Alec Baldwins wife pretending to be Spanish and how wrong and harmful it is and the same people applauding Eddie Izzard for being a strong, inspiring woman.

Yes! I have never heard a good argument about how race and sex are qualitatively different and yet one is acceptable to appropriate and one is not. Neither should be.

Race is basically a social construct. We might have different skin pigmentation but essentially we are all humans. A black woman's biology is the same as a white woman's.
A man and a woman have different biology but for some reason this is now being discounted. 🙄

We live in very strange times.

I find the criticisms about a lack of POC characters in the books a little boring to be honest. There are a number of prominent, likeable and popular characters who are not white, all of whom are “good guys”. JK wrote the books in the early 90’s, in a predominantly white society. I’m sure if she wrote them now, she probably would have a more diverse group of characters.

These people who have a major issue all moan about her “retconning” but drag on her for this. What do they want her to do? Grovel for forgiveness? Go back and rewrite the books? They herald Rick Riordan for the diversity and inclusiveness in his books...books which he’s currently writing!! (And churns out a ridiculous number of...!) Of course books being published now will reflect a more modern worldview and public appetite.

JK seems to make an effort in her new Potter stuff to be more diverse. She really pushed for Noma to be Hermione in the Cursed Child (who is honestly the perfect Hermione) but then was met with accusations of retconning. She can’t win.

Yes I agree. I saw Noma playing Hermione on stage and she was really good. In fact she made Hermione more likeable.
I never liked Hermione much before, too much of a 'know all' in the books and bloody irritating in the films!

I think there is absolutely no way that she can win with it either. I saw a really weird Twitter thread yesterday where they were criticising her for using an overtly Irish name like Seamus Finnigan, and again with Cho Chang. I know there's been some controversy over whether 'Cho Chang' is even a legit name. But in this thread they were slating her for using 'obviously foreign names' and I mean...how else in a book does someone tell you that a white boy is Irish? Someone actually said it's akin to calling a character John Smith, which to me seems...okay? Like you say it was the 90s when actually people wouldn't have batted an eyelid back then if she had made zero effort to be inclusive. And I'm not saying 'let's celebrate her for doing a tiny thing to be inclusive' but I don't really see how this is something to criticise either. She was very pro black Hermione. Surely, true inclusivity means not having to keep pointing out that a character is Irish or not white or anything, I would think it's weird and forced to make it overt all the time which ethnicity a character is or where they're from, isn't the point kind of to avoid that and not 'assume' that characters are white unless otherwise stated?

I also really agree with whoever said that those commenting the goblins with big noses working in finance are Jewish-esque to me seems a huge projection on behalf of whoever first pointed that out. That had genuinely never ever occurred to me, goblins as a fantasy 'species' always tend to have big noses, it's not Rowling specific.

Twitter is unbearable at the moment, there is a big thread that seems to have gained traction about 'not giving Rowling your money' and 'can we all get over Harry Potter'. My pet peeve with these people is that as with the toilet issue, they want everyone to adopt their way of thinking and think that their view gets to dictate how everyone else behaves. The narcissism is astounding. If I want to give my money to Rowling I will, that's my choice and none of their business. How someone can be so arrogant to think they get to make decisions on behalf of all women or everyone else blows my mind.

These people on Twitter complaining about the characters- just write your own books if you want to see a certain character portrayed a certain way. What a bunch of idiots

That's what fanfiction is for honestly, there are some actually really good ones written with the characters in a more diverse spectrum.

Feel free to correct me here it’s a very long time since I read the books. But how many of the characters (aside from the obvious ones) actually had full on character descriptions inc race ?? I don’t particularly remember Neville or Oliver Wood (the quidditch captain in book 1) actually being specified as white. There was so many book characters with very generic names so surely that says more about the people throwing around the accusations assuming they were all white.

As for the films
Could the casting directors have done more in terms of diversity ??
Yes.
But they can only work with who turns up to the casting call. The earlier films had a fairly tight turnaround so I don’t think they could be that fussy.
They also used a lot of local school kids for some scenes (they filmed some near me and this area is very very white so when they asked for local kids they were white)

Yes agree. When black Hermione was announced (I dislike even calling her 'black Hermione' which is kind of the whole point!) there were some right weirdos online clinging to this one description of Hermione as being 'pale' in the book and 'black people can't be pale'. I mean honestly, what a reach.
