Totally disagreed with the stand out space winners, and think it’s a travesty that John has got through when all he managed to do was make some fret work and a bit of engraved wood, and paint the inside of a pre-bought cabinet pink. Half of the stuff he had planned wasn’t finished yet again.

I personally hated the pink and green in the shop, I found it garish, and the only bits I thought were clever e.g. the origami window display and using the paper for the lampshades were done by Craig.

I do agree that the fabric in the women’s shop could have been a ‘moment’ and thought the white boucle would get dirty fairly quickly, but otherwise thought their space was spot on.

That's interesting - my OH hated the pink and green too and much preferred the clothes shop (which I did like too - it had some lovely touches). But I did love the paper shop more. Just more inviting to me personally.
I think Craig carried John. I guess the intention was always to have two weaker/stronger pairings so either John or Briony was always going to go (just in case by some quirk a pairing of Craig and Rita went wrong and one of them had to go).

I thought the paper shop interior design was such that I would remember "oh that lovely indian paper shop in rye". It was distinct and memorable.
The clothes and jewellery shop was nice but not distinct from any other clothing shop. It was pleasant but forgettable.
And I think the purpose in retail is for you to think of their store first when you want to buy. So for that reason the lads were the clear winners.

Tbh I think an Indian paper shop was an easier brief in that the colours will always be gorgeous and rich - but it would be easy to veer into cliche which I don't think they did. And it looked liked it smelled lovely 😂
The clothes shop was really nice but a bit generic and unmemorable. It was screaming out for pops of colour.

As @Jelly Bean said, the product in the men’s shop was just more memorable in the first place. I certainly have never seen an Indian paper shop in the U.K. I’m not sure the women could have done much to make the clothes/jewellery shop more distinct without it overtaking the products in there and particularly not on the budget they had.

The men (well Craig) were actually able to have free materials for their design e.g. paper for the lampshades and the women couldn’t really do that unless they wanted to drill holes in trainers and hang light bulbs from them 😂

I liked bits of Craig and Johns but actually thought the fretwork and stencilling was far too twee and cliche.
As soon as Rita put that big curtain up my PH said ‘Michelle won’t like that!’

The clothes shop was so generic. Could have been anywhere. Also the owner wanted something different to display the jewellery other than a display case. But they put it back in (mismatching) display cases with some rocks. Granted it was a bit of an improvement but nothing groundbreaking. Also some of it was so low to the ground it's not practical to see.

The paper shop was beautiful, gave a sense of brand and was completely in keeping with the product it was selling. Really hope John keeps this up. He has some of the best ideas but has really struggled on the time keeping front.

Thought it was interesting last night, as although I did prefer the design for the paper shop and agree it was more memorable. The girls shop was a great space to display the stock, and I bet the owners loved it!

In fact a generic ladies fashion shop like that must be tricky to design for. The clothing itself was tasteful and stylish, not bright colours or that different in style from loads of others. So to some extent the design has also be tasteful and stylish!
And the jewellery was far to valuable to be able to display in any way other than in a lockable cabinet, which must be restrictive!

Agree men got the better shop to design for but the girls didnt even jazz up the changing room, they couldve went to town there and it was generic and boring

I could have sworn they were going to use wallpaper in the changing rooms - did I miss it or am I imagining I heard that?

I've just watched and yes they did say they were going to wallpaper the changing rooms.

I felt it was just ok, nothing special. I did feel for them because there was a lot of merchandise. If they had done too much it would look cluttered quickly.

True but they could have come up with some more exciting type of cabinets/cases and not had them so low to the ground

I think they had too many clothes in there- really well merchandised shops have far fewer clothes, set out clearly with outfits and colours in mind with a lot of the stock in the back). If they had reduced the number of rails it would have given them more room to think about the jewellery. I know they mentioned that but it was still too cluttered for me and the jewellery shoes took a back seat because of all the painted rails.

I have to say that I disagree with who left and who won! I think the paper shop looked far too twee and childish and parts of it felt unfinished. I really liked what the ladies did and I feel that Michelle overlooked how Brioney also changed the changing room area and advertised the bra fitting service. I think Rita went through based on her work in previous weeks more so than what she did this week.
My pick would have been Craig and John on the sofa and having John go.

I thought Briony was unlucky. She was a lot better than John who has no idea of time management. He does not seem to have improved at all during the series and just seems out of his depth. Craig carried him this week. I liked both shops but if I was on a day trip to Rye I would visit the paper shop. The merchandise looked beautiful.

Yes John totally mucked up the window area which was part of his remit. I know Craig did the actual window dressing but John was in charge of the storage area underneath and didn't do it, also just plonked empty baskets in a gap where he was meant to put something else.
Briony at least completed everything she set out to do.
John was extremely lucky Craig got him through. All his 'I'm not on the sofa this time!' was really nothing to do with him.
However I do like him and he seems very nice - but 100% he's out next.
What is the next challenge? I've completely forgotten.

I think it’s creating a space for an Edinburgh Fringe Act.

Can’t believe John’s in the semi finals - he’s not completed his work nearly every week, how is he still there? He’s got to go next week surely?

Definitely. If Rita or Craig go it will be a massive travesty. He's nice - and good but just needs a huge amount of time to do anything 😂
It's really been a two horse race between Rita and Craig from the off. Everything else has been filler.
