We’ve just bought a house so have a mortgage of around £280,000 - will be making over payments each month as we’ve always been doing.

No loans

No credit cards debt as we pay the balance in full each month

Nothing spend of the overdraft

No store cards

I am very conscious that I’m slightly addicted to shopping so I have to be extra vigilant about my spending habbits. The Minimalists have helped so much in this department. They have helped me focus on what’s important in life - not things! Me and my husband would like our house paid off before we’re old!

I am in a DMP and currently owe £33k, we've managed to pay off £26k off the total debt, so that was £59k originally. I am diagnosed with a type of Bipolar disorder, namely Cyclothymia and I used to spend a lot... At the time I earned well but then I had a total nervous breakdown following bullying by management. (I worked in social care in local gov). I had to leave work, I got a lot worse and developed agoraphobia, then CMHT couldn't decide if I was bipolar or Borderline personality disorder, so that was fun when I was told to shuffle off and only come back if I was about to suicide... (Thanks tory government for the cut backs!)
That was 2012 and I haven't worked since. My husband works but only brings in £20k a year, I get PIP and we get WTC of £50 a month. I get CTC but that will end in August when my youngest turns 18 and goes to university.
Our mortgage ends in Nov 2020 fortunately but we are shared ownership living in Surrey, we can't afford to buy the other half which is now stupid money, even if we could get a mortgage. Luckily our rent is low and we have no plans to move. We are both 47 so it's a case of just getting along. Middle kid is back living at home after finishing his law degree but he is working full time at a supermarket while doing his masters while he considers which area of law he wants to go into.
We don't have it too bad, in the last couple of months I have actually been taking the dog for a walk, trying to beat the agoraphobia. I could never cope with crowds again, so not sure about working a normal job. I have been giving a lot of thought to opening my own small business as I'm a very good embroiderer, but we'll see.

No debt
No mortgage
No car on finance
😣 work all the hours under the sun but physically cannot afford to get into debt.
Same here no mortgage

It's a very long story of how we got into such a mess but here is the short version (which is still quite long 😂)

All my debt of £20,000 with various creditors (loans/credit cards/store accounts) was written off on medical grounds when I had to give up work five years ago due to a serious, chronic, lifelong illness.

My partner has almost £30,000 worth of debt, which is over half his annual salary, on three credit cards. None of them are on any kind of balance transfer and we are so hopelessly overcommitted, he cannot get another further credit.

We have been living beyond our means for years and I also developed a crippling spending addiction, which is barely under control even now. I am really trying though but it is HARD. Instagram has fuelled it too big time. We were trying to make inroads into his debt but getting nowhere.

Earlier this year, we had to finally admit defeat, after all his credit cards were finally pretty much maxed out, and we moved from our rented flat into a house owned by my partner's father. He's letting us live here rent free in order to sort ourselves out. We are saving well over £1,200 just on rent and my boyfriend's travel costs alone. His father has actually repaid two of the credit cards, to avoid the interest payments, and is deferring paying him back until we clear the other one ourselves (which we are doing by £1,000 a month) We are only spending what we have in our current account now.

We don't smoke, drink or take drugs. We eat out rarely and get a takeaway a couple of times a month. We are not extravagant at all really except for my compulsive spending. I also suffer from depression/anxiety/agoraphobia and my partner is effectively my carer even though he's never here as he works long, long hours. The last three years have been pretty grim and I have barely left the house. I was seriously thinking about suicide about eighteen months ago.

But it is a massive relief having a bit of breathing space every month now and we are even starting to having a bit of a life again. His parents are supportive of this and I'm told there will be "no judgement" from them about what we spend our money on. I think having had a snapshot into our lives, since living here, when they have stayed with us, has really opened their eyes to how bleeping tit things have been. They told me recently they wished my partner had said something sooner so they could have helped earlier.

I have been awarded standard rate PIP (hoping this will be increased to enhanced at an upcoming tribunal) and I also have a very small pension. I am determined to do something nice for both of us every month next year and have a few things booked already. I have realised I need to have something to live for, for my mental health, and my partner needs a break from work (he is a workaholic and never takes leave unless I book something and effectively force him to) We are going to lose my Mobility car in March - hoping to win that back at tribunal - but his parents have also indicated they will help us out with that too if we don't get back on the scheme. They are not particularly demonstrative people - upper middle class, stiff upper lip types - but I honestly cannot thank them enough for what they have done for us. I realise we are VERY lucky to have had this help.

Hopefully, all being well, we will be debt free by May 2022 and I am determined not to ever get into this situation again. His father has also put some money aside to help us with a deposit for our own home but that is a long way off and I have no idea what or where we'll even be able to afford by then.

Edit: just remembered we owe his parents another £3,500 from when he changed job a couple of years ago and didn't get paid for three months due to an administration issue and they had to sub us. They haven't mentioned that though! 🙈
Gosh that is a lot of pressure, I also have a bad sending habit but simply don’t have the money to spend so it doesn’t become a problem. Plus my husband moans when I get parcels delivered 😂

I really hope you can get a grip on your finances and one dY feel the relief of being DEBT FREE ! X

79thousand House paid off over 15years hopefully
2000 on a credit card
1000 on another credit card
In my over draft always about 100
God knows what I owe my parents I'm lucky enough for them to only ask a few times a year for a small payment back (which I love them dearly for not putting pressure)
I work a 40plus week and never seem to get anywhere

Could you explain what you mean by I’ll never pay off anyway x.

Around 14k in bank loans and old credit cards but currently going through DRO process. I have BPD and struggle to work a ‘normal’ job but work from home/self employed and get topped up by UC. Tried a debt management plan but couldn’t meet the payments even after selling my car. Gave up on my idea of owning my own home years ago!

My debt is:

- £1500 on my student loan, which is slowly being paid off through my salary, it should be clear in 3 years.
- £4.5k split between two 0% interest credit cards. I was left with a chunk of debt when I split up with an ex in 2011 (was debt-free before that, with savings too!) and it spiralled from there. I was very foolish in my mid 20s and got addicted to gambling websites. I found the strength to ‘self-exclude’ myself from the websites I was using with Gamstop in 2017, so I don’t think I could sign up to any now even if I tried (I haven’t tried!)

That’s all I owe, I don’t have a car on finance and I rent. At my worst I had £6k on credit cards and was £1k deep into my overdraft, so I’m happy with how I’ve been chipping away at it. My current 0% credit card deals run until early 2022 and I plan to have them clear by then, I pay around £150-200 a month towards them.

My biggest tip for anyone spiralling like I did is to take out a 0% balance transfer credit card if you can, before I did that I spent years paying the minimum amount on cards and paying almost the same back in interest every month, it got me nowhere. I wish I’d done it sooner.

Also if anyone has a gambling problem like I did, and is too scared to reach out to anyone, please please google Gamstop. I think some websites aren’t covered by it, but for me, taking that step of admitting to myself I had a serious problem and finding the strength to input my details on there was the wake up call I needed.

Just want to say we all make mistakes.
I know i sure did 2 student account overdrafts
Store cards loans credit cards over the years.
Been married 15years we had many financial up and downs
I wish we had cleared all debts and saved pre kids.
It's been rough but we previously cleared around 30k debts..
We brought a house party due to inheritance.
We run 1 car we paid cash for.
Kids cost a lot more as they get older.

I think student loans is 9k but I don't count them until I return to work.
2k credit card spent on emergencies not clothes or frivolous things.
185k mortgage
No savings need some.
100 quid over draft.
Aim to clear it all and save a emergency fund this year.
Have a low buy year

Discovered Dave Ramsey on you tube and debt free community on Instagram.
I previously found mse debt free wannabes board and old style so useful during our crappest times.

My tips is clear storecards 1st very are evil.
Seek help from cab christans against poverty or debt change not a company that will charge you.
Set a budget for everything and stick to it.
Make some cut backs and try and earn more.
Maybe I'm too old to be influenced by Insta influencers if it had been around when I was going 1st time mum maybe I would be.
Klarna sounds dangerous and feels sad so many people are influenced to spend and get into debt.
Good luck to anyone in their debt free journey

£6k loan
£3k overdraft
£1.5k credit card
😬😬
Thankfully, I’ve been eligible for a 0% transfer card and so the overdraft and credit card are getting blammed on that.
Also been very fortunate that I’ve recently started a new job with a significant pay increase, so will be sorting that debt throughout 2020. Well, fingers crossed...

If I was answering this question 3 years ago the answer would have been around the £10K mark, made up of credit cards, loans and overdraft. On top of that would have been the outstanding amount on the mortgage at about £89K. However, my parents both died in very quick succession and I inherited a very significant sum of money. I paid my mortgage off and all debts, leaving enough for lots of nice stuff, including 2 years off work. I have recently acquired an overdraft of £1550, but that is it. No idea how really, just lack of attention to prices I guess!

Just my mortgage and car, I still have nearly £1.5k a month fun money after all bills are paid. I have CC’s and accounts with Next & Very but I always pay it off and the mortgage is overpaid every month. We have plenty in savings so in summer we will get rid of the car and buy a newish one outright with savings.

8 years ago I was in £25k debt and renting. Lots of hard work and savings and we now have a good saving pot and our own house. We have had several promotions, bonuses and 2 redundancy pay outs along side a year of saving £1k a month (it was a killer but so worth it!) to help. No outside help, all done on our own.
this is very inspiring as I’m in £25k at the moment and renting and it’s good to know you’ve come out on top the other side :)

I am about £200 into my overdraft (a planned overdraft but still get daily charges!!)
I owe Studio about £150 and simply be about £200.

We have a mortgage but my husband pays that as I don't work, our cars are owned outright. My husband earns good money and pays me 'keep" of £125 a week but out of that I have to do the food shop for a family of 4, 2 cats and a dog, my phone bill and Anything the kids needs for school, it abrely touches the sides to be honest.

Wish I could win the lottery and pay it all off even just a grand would be amazing I don't need need millions!

My dad died a few years ago, I was written out his will but we found he had life insurance of 60k, I put a claim in but not heard anything yet!
