And for those wondering my family actually grew up on benefits, neither went uni and neither were in well paid jobs. The fact you’ve assumed the opposite “speaks volumes”
I said if all the things listed don’t apply then you are privileged, I didn’t assume anything 😊 even having both your parents, having any kind of job, receiving benefits to help look after you - is a privilege not everyone has.

Being able to be politically apathetic also reeks of privilege.. just saying 🥴😂

(I’ll stop now, promise 😅)

Not moderating the thread but I suspect the airing of the house purchase and good Tory values was enough for some, those of us who have read anything in the last decade get it, thankfully.

Tbh only follow this thread for anecdotal tea about houses, if I wanted Tory propaganda I’d log into Facebook 😫

Wow I think you need to work on your attitude 🤦‍♂️

Simple, we prioritised. We bought our flat in our mid 20’s having both worked at university alongside studying, before going straight on to grad jobs.

We don’t go on fancy holidays as we’ve prioritised having a home, we don’t really go clubbing and we eat sensibly. We usually go for a meal each week at a nice restaurant but other than that we take lunch to work etc. It’s pretty easy to save if you want to.

Many people buy lunch every day - over a year assuming £5 lunch and a 5 day working week thats £1,200 (5 days, allowing for 20 days holiday). People pay £50 a month for phones, pay crazy money for cars on finance, spend money on takeaways and it all adds up
It totally depends on what job you have, where you live while youre saving, and also where you live location wise.

So much of the country live pay check to pay check with v few luxuries. People are chronically underpaid vs hourd worked, childcare costs are crippling, private rent is expensive (before we had our mortgage our rent was double the cost of our mortgage for an identical house)

So the irony is we would find it much easier to save now than we did when we rented.

It can be a huge struggle for some people to save up 15-20k. Especially those on lower incomes. House prices are also off the chart high.

I've saved up in excess of 40k during my years working but house prices are so mental that as a single person I can't even get a 1 bed flat in the area I live in because the maximum mortgage I'd get lent is far less than that of that which would cover property in the area. It's stupid.

House prices are crazy we just sold our 3 bed terrace for 248… close to beach but not a great area, we are buying a 3 bed 8 miles away with better schools for 425k 🤮 I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. This is in Dorset.
We got our first flat 135k at 24 with our own money, we didn’t go to uni just went straight to work with a 90% mortg sold for 155k & got this home for 189k. We will have a big mortgage but need to be close to work & good schools .

Just read the other comments & might delete this now 😳

Rewind the clock 21/22 years ago and that’s when property started to rise ridiculously.
Labour had swept into power in 97. They were so busy cosying up with the bankers and letting all the dirty money from Russia and the rest of the world sweep into London. They did absolutely duck all to stop this and most of them ended up with huge portfolios.
They introduced the buy to let promoting it as your future pension fund.
They managed to kill off social mobility whilst they were all privileged with no university fees and given grants in their time.
The Tories have never given a tit but I hate Labour to this day for betraying the people they should have helped.
Champagne bleeping socialists.

No need to delete it - literally nothing wrong with what you have said. I don’t think anyone was meaning there was a problem with having an expensive property in general.

I live in Dorset too and the last year things have gone absolutely nuts with prices - they were already pretty nuts before!

We sold our 2 bed flat recently for just under £240k and it had the worlds smallest kitchen, a girl in her early 20s bought it and I felt almost guilty that she had paid that much because honestly, it is a fairly standard flat - just happens to be quite near a very nice beach.

We bought a detached 3 bed further away from the beach to be near good schools and because we want children soon. I dread to think how expensive houses are going to become here. My younger siblings are being priced out of buying here at this point.

40k?? You just need to work harder according to some here!

I’m joking obviously. It’s amazing to save up that amount of money. What is a joke is that people have this much in savings and it’s still not enough to buy a home. Single people find it particularly hard as it’s all geared towards 2 people earning a wage.

I don’t see a way how we can possibly save up enough. No one is entitled to own a home, but is it mad to think that it shouldn’t be this hard? Probably be in our 60’s by the time we save enough. Dread to think how hard it will be for future generations when it’s like this now🥴

Both my nieces and my sister have saved like mad in the last year, to pay a deposit for their houses. They stayed at home, paid rent to their parents and saved the rest of their wages. My sister works for the police, crazy hours and shifts and her and her boyfriend have just moved into their their 2 bed house. If you have a job and can save, its hard work but it can be done. As somebody else said, you have to prioritise. I also appreciate that not everybody can do it if you're already renting.

What about those people that are in low paid jobs and their wage just about covers their essential bills? Should they prioritise saving for a house over feeding their children?

You are being ignorant to the circumstances of others.

I do get what posters are saying, we are a generation that expect luxuries - holidays, eating out etc. My parents had to save for 2 years to but a dryer when they first got married. I definitely could save more if I cut out luxuries.

But I am in a privileged position many arent and the housing market is totally fooked and in accessible for many - ironically as the last year has shown us front line key workers.

To many lazy fuckers these days, if only they didn't spend £20 a month for a phone that was their internet, computer, camera, calendar etc and didn't go on holiday once a year for a few hundred then they could buy a house that's gone up hundreds of thousands in recent years. 🙄

This luxury argument is a load of tit. These things have become so cheap while the essentials like a home have spiralled out of control.

I'm off to watch homes under the hammer, soon I'll remortgage to buy a few more properties and I'll never have to work again! I'll get some renter scum to people farm 🤑
