From what I've seen, I personally don't think Holly takes running that seriously. She only seems to run at one pace; she doesn't add any interval or tempo sessions into her training. Her ideas about pacing and what's achievable for her are a bit warped. I just can't help but think she runs for the sake of burning calories and uses it to beat herself up etc. I just don't get the impression she enjoys it.
Oh yeah definitely she doesn't know about it at all. I think it's been discussed previously on GG in great depth that she's running too fast to improve in the long term and the treadmill was probably miscalibrated.

When I started running I did a mit ton of research about it and have kept researching throughout because I love learning about the science behind it all and how to use it to my advantage. I'm actually about to start my coaching qualification with my country's athletics association so it's something I'm very passionate about (and also why I can't watch any of her running content because it drives me mad)

I'm honestly confused by her running. I have a knee injury from running and I was similarly annoyed and upset to Holly that I couldn't run, so I can empathise with her on that point and I know other sporty people who would be similarly upset at not being able to do what they love.

But then she says she doesn't compare her runs and just glances over her watch at the end of the run, as someone who appears so detail oriented I'm surprised she isn't pouring over her strava stats. Also when she said she doesn't aim to do a PB run because she's worried the pressure will get to her shows how worried she is by failure. She just doesn't seem to have a plan for improving on her running apart from running more.

I honestly hate when already fit people get into running and decide to share their wisdom which is usually "just run and see how it goes!" for people who aren't sporty the journey is usually a lot harder than that! Zanna van Dijk is another example of doing this

Yes to the last bit especially! The highest rates of injury come from new runners because of technique or gear issues or doing too much at once (@Holly) plus it's taking it for granted how daunting and hard running is! We may brush off 5km like it's a walk in the park but the average person thinks it's a very, very long way and may need to spend months building up to it. Imo these are the running your eyes that should be highlighted as they're far more preresentative and won't make the average person feel like cr*p for not being able to run 10km or whatever off the cuff.

Oooh which other you tubers run? I haven't really found anyone apart from Emma Abraham's on?

I'm in Australia so I'll be doing the lvl 1 athletics Australia recreational running coach course. Because I'm in the part that's still locked down it'll be an online course with pre-recorded content and then four live classes in the evenings. I believe for SA, NSW and Queensland there are in person courses but (assuming you're in Aus) I can't see a problem with you opting to do the online one instead. I'm happy for you to DM me about it if you'd like - my coach actually facilitates them so it's quite a cool opportunity 😊

Also I'm scared of her reading born to run and then going down the Scott Jurek rabbit hole and even further into her compulsive exercise/ restricted eating because if one vegan is able to run ultras then it's fine for everyone to do - right?!
Yes! I enjoy Emma! Like I said, Flora Beverley is fun to watch. The absolute best is Ben Parkes; he's super great (and his GF Sarah Place has recently started a channel too!). Then I also watch a lot of triathletes as well: Harry Palmer, sophiesfootprints and Twice The Health (TTH's Instagram is way more active than their YT, but they do have a fair amount of videos that I'll watch if they come up in recommended). Oh, and The Running Channel! All of these people are great, but if you only decide to check one channel out, choose Ben Parkes. I could give you a huuuuge list of running Instagrammers though but will refrain in case you don't!

Ahhhh, ok. I'm in the UK so the one you have to do first is just a one-day thing with a practical assessment which evaluates your ability to lead a group session. Which sounds super daunting to have to do in real life, but my awkwardness over video chat would just be 10 times worse.

When i go through my running phrases i quite like Susie Chan too. My favourite running instagrammer is thisgirlcanrunfar but hers is more everyday content than running, i think we need a running thread on here for a bit of gossip ! If anyone follows them I was surprised when thewelshrunner and kellogs_ontherun announced they were together and had a baby in quick succession as she already had a few kids and they both seemed to be in lTR before. Then another one projectmarathongirl recently announced she was pregnant when it seems like she only just got with her fellow running instagrammer bf

Holly has name checked Ruby Granger a lot recently who is also known for obsession with productivity and a regimented plan for each day. I think Holly is afraid to befriend people who will challenge her obsessions.

The vlog where she cried about her ankle still hurting after only letting it rest for 2 weeks threw up lots of red flags for me.

Also poor Dad, for his birthday meal he had to eat bland food of their choosing, not what he would like. If they must eat their own dishes fine but at least allow him to eat something he likes (he's not vegan is he?)

Any injury like that should have been 6 weeks minimum, like light stretches introduced after 2 weeks but my last ankle injury took 10 weeks to heal enough to walk a mile on and it was a simple sprain.

I don't think he's even vegetarian (I saw a quiche lorraine in their fridge once) I just hope he got to eat something he really wanted for tea! During lockdown of all times you'd really want to treat someone on their Birthday but apparently not...

Yeah he’s not vegan or veggie! Both him and Matthew eat meat etc. I just think if it’s your dads birthday then you should at least take into account what he wants to eat.

I have a feeling the family rarely eat together because of the fact some are vegan and others aren’t. It clearly puts a bit of a divide in the family and takes away from the whole ‘family dinner’ aspect.

I've seen what other people have say about her reading, and I agree up to a point about her possibly turning it into another productivity challenge etc, but I actually think that it may be the healthiest thing she's doing atm, for two reasons:

1) she said in the video where she reviewed the first batch of books she read over lockdown something like she 'got lost' (as in 'was completely absorbed') when reading, and I think it's great that she has found a way to get a break from her head for even a short amount of time

2) reading may be the thing that opens up her world the most and enables her to learn about a variety of people from different places who live differently to her, as well as people who face some of the same struggles that she does. At least two of the books in her pile were explicitly about mental illness (OCD), which is something that she will have learnt more about, and this will also be the case for other topics, like racism, religion and absuive relationships

I was actually impressed that not many of the books were YA fiction, and at a glance she did seem to have quite a good mix.

In short, reading could actually be a lifeline for her.

But it does not have to divide a family! Now adays it is so easy with all the fake-meat to just eat the same and then substitute.
However I feel they would get quite snappy towards the meat eaters so maybe it’s for the best

Just to say I wasn't saying vegan food in general is bland, just in case what I said could be interpreted that way, but their vegan meals seem deficient in proteins and carbs, and I can imagine having to eat a bowl of leaves and bland rice is not exactly a birthday treat meal, aha. What bugs me is how spacious yet empty their house is, it seems devoid of soul and decoration.

I don't like Holly's running content for a few reasons:

a) It seems like she is only sharing her running for bragging purposes. "Oh look at me, I can run 10km in 40 minutes!"

b) She makes running look so ritualistic but it absolutely should not be. E.g. running every single day with barely any rest days. That is just a recipe for an injury and she's encouraging this behaviour to her followers. Also, who the f*** goes for a run in an Australian desert?

c) SHE DOESN'T REFUEL PROPERLY  . Running 10km burns a lot of energy and she makes no effort to up her calorie intake afterwards. She thinks she is being revolutionary by adding a teaspoon of peanut butter to her kidney beans and potatoes :)sick:). She needs waaayyyyy more protein (and large) than this. What is wrong with adding tofu, avocado or houmous to her "salads"? Does she ever eat nuts or seeds?

Holly just regresses when she’s at home with her family.... I’m sure that’s normal to an extent for most people but she just seems to act so young! If you told me she’s a 22 year old Cambridge 1st class graduate I wouldn’t believe you from her recent content.

Of course it's a very productive morning routine, can't be a standard morning routine
To be honest I thought her mums routine was a pretty standard one. She’s a homeowner and a parent who does all the average things a homeowner and parent does!! Feeds her dogs, eats 2 breakfasts, sorts out her garden, showers etc etc. I wouldn’t exactly call that productive but more ‘I’m a parent who has a household and children to keep an eye on’..... seems average to me.

Kinda seems like the messages on here are sinking in with Holly about the way she acts around her sister. She seems to be toning it down on the whole ‘gremlin’ aspect.
