So the new male gladiator Ahmed has a terrible name...... Emporer. Wtf are they thinking this series?

I don't like them, either. Perhaps it's because Hammer is a bit useless, and Cyclone is also mean-spirited to the extent it comes across as un-sportly. If that's a word!

I think you've summed up my thoughts on Cyclone perfectly.

Hammer got on my wick when they first introduced him as he seemed all style and no substance - tall, over-white teeth, masses of hair and not very good - but having seen him on Sewing Bee over Christmas (and on something else I think, but I forget what) he grew on me a wee bit as he seemed a nice enough bloke.

I’m going through the same thought process now. It’s a 2.5 hour drive for me and with my ASD son it tow it’s going to be really tough. He can’t handle queuing but looking like we’ll have to do several hours to even get a chance of getting in. God help us if we don’t actually get in after making the journey and then queuing, my life won’t be worth living! There’s got to be a better system than just queuing for hours on the off chance of getting in!

The OG gladiators just seemed so much more well gladiator like. You knew if hunter was on the wall then the contender up against him was fucked. The gauntlet was actually hard - imagine coming up against rhino, warrior and Trojan. Wolf on hang tough. The wall and hang tough you had jet and lightning. But then perhaps “back then” fitness wasn’t as mainstream (if that makes sense).
This series I do really enjoy and I think they’ve done a good job - I just wish it didn’t feel so manufactured. i also wish glads like Athena were a bit better/featured more. I just feel like there’s potential being wasted a bit.

Spot on. I tried to think did the 90s lot seem harder and tougher because I was just a kid and they were larger than life. But you have described it perfectly.

As an adult now I wouldn't want come across those you mentioned in those games. I wouldn't mind prime Jet on Hang Tough though wrapping them long legs around me to yank me off.

Ah I love Ella, the woman that won on Saturday night. And Finn! We were rooting for them both.

I just think things like PT and boot camps/gym bods weren’t so ‘big’ in the 90s as ubiquitous as they are now. It was always going to appeal to those who are super active and sporty, even back in the 90s, but there is a bigger pool to pick from now.

I wonder what the audition process for contestants is. Is it just interviews or do they do fitness tests?

They do fitness tests and also drugs tests to include steroids. No contestants or gladiators can be on steroids. Giant has talked about this as he was using steroids during his body building career.
