I finally managed to grab 10 mins at work to call Unison to cancel my 20 year long membership. A very nice woman answered, which was slightly annoying as I was all fired up for an argument, but she asked for my details and my reason for leaving. I told her that as a woman, I didn't feel represented by Unison, especially after the disgraceful actions of their representatives on Saturday. She sounded quite resigned and said, "I understand totally, that's no problem". I did ask that my comments be noted and passed on, and she promised to do so, but who knows

In fact many of us have probably been on the receiving end of very questionable behaviour by male members of the medical profession, so if she wants to go down that road she’s opening a massive can of worms!

This such a daft argument, I have had male opticians stare into my eyes whilst mm's from my mouth, doesn't mean anyone else can just come up to me and do the same.
I have seen a similar argument from the TRAs since Wednesday "If wards are single sex then staff of the opposite sex won't be allowed."

Urg, why do I do this to myself. I'm listening to the rest is politics and Alastair Campbell is as thick as 2 planks. They previously declared that they weren't going to discuss trans issues because they haven't done any research on it (the simple answer would be to do some research) and the women in Alastairs life are basically cool girls who have no issue with any of this.
I get the feeling Rory is much more sympathetic to the GC cause because hes talked before about listening to the witch trials of JK Rowling but seems too spineless to stand up to Alastair on this and/or has been convinced to be afraid of the blue hairs.
They haven't mentioned anything about the issue when Sandie Peggie,Darlington nurses etc was going on and only discussed it previously when the Cass report came out.
They start off with Rory saying how odd it is that in the UK is progressive feminist women fighting this whereas in the States its right wing reactionaries and how hes in the States and has been having to explain it to people all week who are baffled why left wing women are fighting this.
Alastair then pipes in, clearly still having done no research on any of this still and says how he and his partner met a TIF at an event last year who spoke very movingly and he thought of this person and going forward what bathroom were they supposed to use and how ridiculous it is that everyone claims this has brought clarity when clearly it hasn't because what is this TIF to do. Its actually covered in the judgment but lets go off vibes and not bother doing any research still.
Rory then claims it will be up to individual premises and owners to decide. Then Alastair decides to start quoting Jameela Jamil
who is claiming that theres going to be genital inspections.He then goes on to say the debate is vile, noxious and toxic. Then how dare women have celebrated winning the case and he claims that the podcast has had loads of abuse since previously discussing it.
Rory then claims he has a liberal position on the whole thing and there needs to be practical compromises on both sides such as trans women should not be able to compete in womens sports, would be in favour of gender neutral bathrooms to get round the issue, case by case basis trans women into the female estate in a womens prison because transwomen are under threat and how if you are a transwoman and go into a male bathroom in a skirt you can be beaten up by a man in that bathroom and in a prison very badly treated by fellow prisoners but you could also theoretically and he claims theres very few cases that a transwoman could be a threat to women in prison. He claims case by case basis is the best option but both sides hate that. He then claims that if an African American was denied access to a country club on the basis of race, he shouldn't have to prove hes not violent to be granted access. Apparently the whole issue is incredibly polarised and someone rational like him whos trying to offer liberal compromises is going to get abuse and hate from both sides.
Alastair then agrees with Rory and apparently thats what he worries about because of the judgement and claims that wasn't the SCs intention but thats the consequence. Alastair then says this should have been resolved by Parliament, if only the politicans had wanted to have the deabte, could have been resolved by a codicil (explanatory note) but apparently the debate has been going on through media, campaigners, loudest voices etc (really get the feeling he would love to call some women shrill here) and then a quite "subtle" 88 page judgment comes out and then thats turned into a reason to carry on the fight. Claims the rhetoric around this judgment is that theres no such thing as a trans person and that if you're born a woman you're a woman for the rest of your life and vice versa.
Rory then has to reiterate that they are both cisgender males and therefore they don't connect with this debate as clearly as some other groups. Rory has a TIF friend and finds this issue central to their life and their work because they run a clinic which provides puberty blockers for young people who are often suicidal and feel like they need support in protecting their gender identity but then says that the Tavistock report (think he means Cass) shows there are many complexities.
Alastair then says one of the things that wound him up was a channel 4 debate between one of the women involved in the case who was celebrating the judgment and a transwoman in the Scottish highlands who'd been through the whole thing. The woman on the "JK Rowling side" kept calling "her" he and there apparently was an unpleasant sneering.
Rory then says its a classic example of something very niche where probably 85% of the British public doesn't have a view on it.
Alastair then says that polling says trans as an issue is very low down in issues that matter to people. Claims the media has made the most of it and Trump makes the most of it and weaponises it. Then says of course we're not women but we're also not black, poor or African and theres lots of things that they're not but it doesn't mean that they can't have empathy for other people or study things and try to develop an opinion (see previous podcast on Cass where he declared he hasn't studied this and basically wouldn't).
Alastair then claims he really had a falling out with someone at an event who he said to him that he had been brainwashed and asked what do you know anything about being a woman? Alastair then says his opinions have been influenced first understanding its a weaponised debate, so not to rely on the media and the by Grace his daughter and her friends almost all of whom found the judgment alarming and dangerous, his partner and then Helle Thorning-Schmidt who has a TIF child (doesn't acknowledge that these are all upper class women who do not have to deal with this issue in changing rooms etc. ).
Alastair then says none of this has been cleared up and Parliament will have to have another look at it. Claims, him and Rory will get lacerated for this but he does feel strongly and that trans people have enough on their plate without also constantly being thrown into a hot political debate which doesn't get us to the "right place".
