I couldn't help but compare this story to surrogacy. Everyone going mad that a woman picked up a baby wombat (rightfully) but the same people will argue in favour of taking a newborn from the woman who has just given birth to it.
On a related note, I just listened to this audiobook:
I'm an adoptee with no knowledge of my paternal heritage so I'm always interest in stories of donor-conceived people, adoptees and others raised in unconventional families. I've always thought the fertility industry is highly unethical and this didn't disabuse me of that notion. The entire industry is based in eugenics and the mistreatment of women (one of the first pregnancies by sperm donor, the mother thought she was being inseminated with her husband's sperm, but instead a doctor, who sedated her in front of his classroom of male student doctors, made those student doctors take a vote on which of them was the best looking, then inseminated her with his sperm without her knowledge).
