Like it or not, as women it has been ingrained into our subconsciousness that we are ‘lesser’ than men. Even if you’ve had the most intellectually feminist upbringing, the way society is set up, the way men behave, the fact that they are stronger, the way their louder voices dominate, the emphasis on #be kind…
I am consciously aware of all those things, yet if a guy is walking towards me on the pavement, I still instinctively move out of the way, thus confirming his dominance. The times I have said to myself, ‘no, why should I move?’ and held the line, the blokes just don’t move over and will almost walk into you. Those that do eventually sidestep, you can hear them muttering under their breath or see them give you a dirty look. It’s so different with women, with both parties usually adjusting their trajectory way before hand.
