Hello was in the other F1 thread for a long time but did not enjoy the vibe there recently, so I thought I’ll come and say hi here as I love F1 too much to stay away and my dear @aidil told me she’s here too!

My favourite driver is Alex, I do like every other driver too though, but I have a soft spot for Daniel, Pierre, Esteban and Charles, also Lando (occasionally - sometimes more, sometimes less).

Can’t wait for Monza, saw that it might rain and even storm! 🫣

It’s been quite horrible!! It can be so funny and lovely but recently it’s gotten mean - both to members and directed at the WAGs, it’s unnecessary and not what I’m here for. So glad this thread is a much nicer place

I really don't mean to moderate this thread, and if that's the case please be free to report the post. But I feel like this thread was made to be more sport centric, and it's been a lot of thirst postz (a little is always welcome I'm not judging) and tired memes lately from people to take refuge from the other thread. Not really the discussion we usually have.
It's not a big deal, just an opinion.

The calendar is well and truly all over the place! This really needsto be looked at for many reasons, the flights, the logistics, the health of the staff not just drivers (as in time off to recover from long haul flights) plus of course the costs and environment issues. Plus other things I might have missed on my rant

I think a lot of us have been displaced recently and now we’re upsetting the general F1 thread too, so thought I’d make this so we have a safe space again to chat 🙂 We can now go as off topic as we like as we’re in the chatter section!

Aw please don’t feel like we are kicking you off here. This one is just more about what’s actually going on (I don’t mind paddock rumours and chat about the drivers lives). I was on the other one from right near the start but it veered too far off into fantasy and the imaginations/private lives of posters which is fair enough if everyone likes that discussion. More than welcome here to talk about the races and teams!

social media just gives people too much access to celebrities. i saw people laughing about getting blocked by george for tweeting “funny” queen memes to him and calling him a tory twat for his queen tweet - and why wouldn’t he block you? he’s not obliged to put up with that because he’s “famous”.

George in particular is carrying a reputation of being very posh and ‘stuck up’ for no other reason than his accent and his clothing really, and I find that so disheartening. People are so quick to go and judge, even going as far as labeling him a Tory despite having zero proof of that. He’s just well spoken and his interviews might seem a bit ‘PR’ at times, but who could blame him? Look at people like Lando who talk first and think second and the amount of hate he gets for that as well.
So many people say he’s lost his personality after leaving Williams but driving for Merc is a big deal and he’s got a huge responsibility and he wants to do it justice, look at Valtteri and how much more of his personality (and bum) we see now that he’s at Alfa. It’s the nature of being in a huge team and the pressure that comes with it.
Point being is that people love to judge based on very little information which leads them to hate, completely ignoring how he’s the same guy who jumped out of his car to look after Zhou in Silverstone when he had his huge crash, for example. Of course there’s no need to like him but he surely doesn’t deserve the hate.

Bloody hell, the way my heart dropped through my stomach when I started reading the post about Alex earlier on Insta! Poor guy can’t catch a break, his family must have been terrified! I’m so glad he’s out of the woods now. Hope he doesn’t put too much pressure on himself to return so soon. I’m sure Williams will make sure he’s fully healed before he returns anyway!

Lewis can’t win no matter what does for so many people. Everyone going on about he’s petulant and a terrible looser. What about Abu Dhabi? He was so gracious after the race, even going to far as to shake Jos’ hand even though he’d accused him of taking drugs the race before.
He apologised for his comments on the radio- which weren’t even that bad in the context of the petulance and anger that some drivers show. He has to be so careful with everything because he doesn’t have the white privilege of the rest of the drivers on the grid

I completely agree. I don’t think the radio comments were that bad - it was heat of the moment and other drivers have said far worse.
I just feel Lewis can’t ever “win“. When he won his titles the amount of time of people said “it’s the car!” Well Max Verstappen’s car is clearly very good but his success is down to his talent. Lewis is “angry” whereas Max when he is angry shows “passion”. That’s what I meant about the double standards.

The car is instrumental in providing advantages to the team but there is no question that driver talent is required to maximise performance and Lewis is clearly a talented driver. And in reality, all drivers are petulant or angry when things go awry during a race so he is no different there.

It just feels like this year with the car underperforming & Russell excelling, there is a somewhat disconnected, dispirited attitude to Hamilton (def earlier in the season) and the team & Toto are continually having to pander to him with grovelling messages about how sorry they are etc. Just my view but I guess as I'm not a Lewis fan, I'm biased

On a side note, unpopular opinion incoming...

I also dislike Ricciardo. Immensely. The fact he refers to himself as honey badger. Gah! Do people even know what a honey badger is?! Fearless, vicious, aggressive, feared by others... Because I wouldn't class goofster Ricciardo as one. And who comes up with their own nickname anyway? Reminds me of a guy I met travelling who decided to introduce himself as "Spitzy" as he'd decided to rebrand himself whilst on a gap year I digress, back to himself... The drinking from the shoe. Christ. Somewhat amusing first time, good job he wasn't winning many races seeing as the shoe quickly became part of his cool, fun personality. And don't even get me started about when people praise him as a supposed sex symbol Ok, I know all thats harsh but I don't get the adulation for him and couldn't contain it any longer!

if we’re doing unpopular driver opinions then i’m not a fan of lando really. his whole snarky gen-z internet boy vibe just isn’t for me and i wish he’d be sincere about things sometimes. i’m very interested to see how he deals with a teammate around his age with the same level of ambition though, he’s lucked out at mclaren so far.

All the talk now is about the date he signed the contract with McLaren

just reading it! if it IS true that mclaren signed oscar on the 4th july and then had daniel address the garage to say he was staying a few days later……. that’s very messy and almost cruel on their part. daniel’s reactions throughout have seemed genuine to me, and it definitely seems like they were working behind the scenes while simultaneously having him say things or release messages to confirm he was there for the long run.

the oscar/lando dynamic is going to be VERY interesting i think, like we’ve discussed before.
