the lewis situation is interesting isn’t it? that mercedes looks awful to drive and seems to bounce the most of any car out there, but george seems able to get more out of it. it must be tricky to adapt after arguably being in one of the best cars for years though, whereas george is probably used to fighting it more.

I am relatively new to F1 (I’ve only been watching for about a year and a half), can anyone explain what’s going on with Mercedes to me and specifically Hamilton, please? I’ve read allllll the articles about the porpoising but nothing explains why they can’t fix it when others have got a handle on it. And, why is Russell doing so much better than Hamilton when they’ve got the same car? Is it just down to the fact that Russell’s had to fight for it in the past?! Surely it can’t be that simple?? Can anyone shed some more light please for this newb

he (charles) has a tendency to push himself too much sadly, especially when he’s battling for position. he’s my favourite and i’m biased but it was completely his mistake - took way too much kerb trying to force the overtake it sounded like he already thought they’d made a mistake with the tyre choice though so it may have just been desperation.

Yes George did great in the same car so something must not be right with Lewis's car or indeed Lewis? I think Nico was right there about the Lewis Toto chat, Toto taking the blame and still trying to encourage Lewis even though the car is naff for him atm.

from me, a terrible driver , it’s to do with downforce. porpoising is essentially the car being pushed down (with downforce) and then bouncing back up. the new car designs really haven’t helped and you’ll see that all the cars on the grid are doing it to some degree (the ferrari is pretty bad too) but the mercedes just looks outright uncomfortable. the way lewis’ head was moving in his onboard!

mercedes are used to having a really good car and it’s out of character for them to be so far behind the pack. to hear toto refer to his own car as “undriveable” is unheard of. i couldn’t tell you why they’re struggling and are still struggling - mclaren were at the start of this season but already seem to have made good changes. the quotes i see from toto are just “we don’t know what’s wrong” unless he’s being deliberately cagey.

i would say that george is far more used to recently having to get the most out of a struggling car. lewis has had “bad” cars before but certainly not in the recent past which is likely why he always sounds so fed up at the moment. it’s the first time in actual decades that he’s been out of the wdc discussion though.

In my opinion I think Lewis has really struggled after Abu Dhabi - I don’t blame him it was a crappy situation out of his control. Normally on radio he would be angry but he seems resigned to everything atm. Lewis did well in Bahrain but he just doesn’t seem himself.
George has had to work for that seat and has newbie enthusiasm.
I also think George is able to deal better at the minute with the porpoising.

Note to Nico Rosberg - stop being so smug. Yes he’s struggling but when did you defend your ONE world title.

It’s unprofessional innit. Yes they had their issues but Nico left F1 in 2016. Also why isn’t he at the track like everyone else?

nico seems a difficult character to like tbh (as an outsider). as a viewer i enjoy the absolute dramatic energy he brings to his commentary sometimes, but he is needlessly prickly and confrontational in his questioning. i’d love to get the full rundown of what happened between him and lewis though.

also is the cool-down room back permanently?! i missed it!

his comments on deliberately playing mind games with lewis have always stuck with me too. i get that you have an odd dynamic with your teammate sometimes but this is borderline sociopathic:

With the Mercedes being this bad it makes Abu Dhabi last year even more gutting knowing Lewis isn’t going to be in with chance of getting his 8th this year. I say this as a fan so I cannot imagine how Lewis actually feeling about it.

Equally worse that he couldn't have ended on a high last year and retired if he wanted to.

Now he faces staying another year and hoping they can basically redo the entire thing (under cost caps etc) or go out on probably his worst season ever, if it continues like this at least.

Ngl but kinda feel sorry for Lewis. After the end of the season, he defo didn’t need a crappy car to get him back in the groove and fighting for the title. Hope he’s doing OK mentally
