It's awkward because neither of them want to do it. Nobody knows anything about Extreme E (other than it being a load of tit). And neither probably know a great deal about Tanner Foust either, and nor do they probably care a great deal. The awkwardness definitely doesn't come from them two not being besties, it's everything else that is making it awkward.
McLaren made too much fuss about an announcement. And all it was was a driver announcement for a racing series that nobody gives two hoots about and has even less viewers than Formula E.

Oh yeah, love that video. When he is flat out on his front at the front of the boat in particular is a main highlight of the video. He's so damn sexy. And makes more than my knees weak.

Well I hope so anyway he needs a podium finish but that race was the best chance maybe as so many of the top drivers were out or had issues.
Next year could potentially be Aston Martins year- as Force India and then Racing point they’ve always worked with one of the lowest budgets and arguably the top ‘best of the rest’ car. Cost cap era could be beneficial for them.
