Have unfollowed FG, just can’t stomach the “look how great I AM” - think it’s absolutely wonderful that her book is having a positive impact on some people and opening their eyes to self worth but how she centres herself in that movement really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The constant sharing of testimonials like “I dumped my shit head boyfriend because of you flo!!!!! You’re my saviour!!!” Just doesn’t sit right with me. It feels like she does it for the applause rather. I think her hearts in the right place but she just gets caught up in the adoration as I think most 21 year olds would in her position.

Couldn’t agree more to be honest. This is exactly how I feel.

The problem with that Diving Bell statement, and which makes it a bit iffy to me, is that it only refers to Chidera’s latest book and doesn’t mention how similar WDOYP is to Chideras first book released in 2018. This is more than just a battle of books IMO. They seem to want to protect Florence over someone standing up for herself. Munroe Bergdorf saying Chidera is hiding half the facts, then why isn’t anyone coming forward with these so called real facts?

I bought Chideras book in 2018 (I liked it but didn’t do much for me tbh) and when Florences book came out I did remark the similarities.

Ngl to only see Chidera's comments as 'you copied me' rather than 'white influencers, including Florence Given, profit off of the work of black women because of people's inherent racism' is intentionally ignorant imo.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of Chidera, but I think she's got some good points. And if Floss's money was where her mouth was, she'd drop diving bell for the horrendous way that they handled this. But I don't see that happening.

I agree with the overall sentiment about white supremacy but Chidera is literally demanding a cheque from Florence and has her fans spamming FG's page demanding the same. There is defo a lot of "you copied me" here

That said, Diving Bell have gone about handling this completely the wrong way and it certainly wouldn't hurt FG's image (or that of any other influencer in the liberation work sphere ) to drop them or at least wield her influence to get them to behave themselves and make things right.

I used to really like Florence but since BLM I’ve definitely looked for more perspectives outside the white, middle class, conventionally attractive influencer bubble. However, I don’t think she did copy Chidera. Personal opinion but I think their covers don’t really look alike and a book about feminism by a young woman is going to explore similar themes. It’s good that Chidera has raised the issue of bias towards books by white writers and they are valid criticisms of her management, publishers and society in general. But she has not yet said why she decided to leave her management and with her now going after Gina Martin it just seems like a personal vendetta. I also find it interesting that I have only seen 1 other black woman publicly support Chidera. There is obviously so much more going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about!

Hard agree. Will be interested to see how this pans out esp with Gina alluding that there's more to the story behind the scenes. With the amount of pressure on influencers to say the right things at the right moment for the sake of optics, I don't buy that all of the powerhouse liberation influencers (including black women like Munroe) are staying silent bc of white supremacy and nothing more. They all know how bad that looks within their spheres of influence. Most of them would rather speak up out of pure self-preservation - there has to be something else at play.

It's raised some really valid wider cultural discourse, but on the individual level I smell a rat.

Apparently the podcast guest - the holistic psychologist - (never heard of them before) is a conspiracy theorist with ties to the extreme right and Qanon, posted 2 days ago but not a word from Florence/team about the situation while she is posting as normal... it's all very strange!

Also, if anyone knows of a thread for the holistic psychologist please link me! I couldnt find one but I'm a bit rubbish with the search on here

Has anyone noticed how everyone involved in this scandal is making an absolute killing? Loud Bossy Gross requested people "pay" her for the "labour" of screenshotting the insta messages that other people are sending her, and doing a couple IG lives. She's made 3 grand in a week. Same with Chidera, her book sales must be through the roof right now with so many people picking up a copy having only heard of her through the drama. And I'm sure Florence's sales are just fine as always lmao.

What always gets me is that the loudest voices on social media tend not to be the voices in the greatest need of financial reparations. Chidera sold 50,000 books, she is a middle class British young woman, and yet people are swarming to send her money. It's just such a shame when there are literally black families in this country who are relying on food banks, charities, and support from their church or friends as a result of intergenerational deprivation and racist policies like the hostile environment preventing them from earning a living or claiming benefits.

All these white do-gooders would be doing a lot more good by donating to a charity that either directly supports working-class black people and those without an immigration status, or one that does policy and advocacy work to try and remove these racist policies. A middle class woman earning £3k in a week from reposting messages and doing a couple of unscripted videos, and all the white activists patting themselves on the back for their performative activism, absolved of their white guilt for having ever liked Florence - well, to me it's a disgusting example of profiteering.

Sure, pay black people for their labour, emotional or otherwise - but there is no way you can convince me that £3,000 in a week is the value of LBG's "labour" it's so ironic that she's literally profiting off of re-sharing other people's words - just like Florence and Chidera did!!! I really hope she will donate the majority of it but somehow doubt it.

LMAO just noticed that since this post, LBG has taken her gofundme off her profile and moved to PayPal instead so the total donations is hidden. People must have cottoned on to how much she's exploiting this situation for personal financial gain people are also now calling her out for resharing hateful/ gossipy messages so she's taken some down. This whole thing is messy!!

I’ve searched her name on Twitter about 2 weeks ago and couldn’t believe that no one was talking negatively about her so I came on here feel like she might believe that she has the best intentions but I think she’s got caught up in the whirlwind of being a best selling “novelist”. Reality is she’s just repackaged ideas that are 40 years old with some pretty illustrations and even her aesthetic is heavily influenced by the slum flower. Think she needs to address it ASAP because the longer she stays quiet the worse it looks!
I’d deffo say that her book is far more “self help” than revolutionary feminism, I recently read invisible women which was amazing at demonstrating how much the world we live in is designed for white men - I recommend it!

What is so wrong to expect a company who is run by white people, who are preaching about BLM, who manage black people and make money off them, to donate a small amount of the money they make to BLM? Also they complained about her demand to add a BLM landing page but then did it anyway? She also said in their original meeting they actually eventually agreed, then changed their minds again. They were free to say no, originally, then they could've parted ways, but they weren't as open as that. It also doesn't excuse their abhorrent behaviour following this.

What do you consider the abhorrent behaviour exactly?

And I can't believe this needs pointing out, but Chidera DOES take home the majority of profits from her work - so the majority of profits ARE going into the black community. I don't know how much DB's cut is exactly but the vast majority will stay with Chidera. If she wants proceeds of her book to go to a charity, that's her prerogative - DB manage their own finances and have indicated they already make their own donations to black causes.

DB are being paid for the work they do for Chidera. She's essentially asking them to do the same amount of work for her, for a lower price than was originally agreed. If she didn't want white people to make their living by promoting her and furthering her career, she should have thought about that in the beginning and hired a black manager.

I remember when I first saw the “dump him” thing and at the time I was in a really awkward place coming to terms with my past relationship. This saying makes it so much easier to self blame and also minimises the amount of pressure in a relationship. You’re 100% right - dump him is a crock of shit.

No because people have really hard times in relationships, people are shitty to eachother. God I know I’ve been shitty to my husband and him to me. We have 3 kids, life can be pretty fucking tough.... you get through times, you have family deaths that put immense pressure on your relationship and illnesses. But floss has got it sorted with her one liners and ‘hilarious’ songs done on her keyboard in her central London flat. Piss off.

I have come to love FG again so much since all the Slumflower stuff. She knows I am double her age or thereabouts but always takes time to respond to DMs etc and had some nice chats with her. I think she is genuinely lovely and was appreciative of some support during the bullshit. I like what she represents.

I’ve seen quite a bit on Twitter where people are saying she has copied sex workers and other black women. There’s a woman on twitter called @imani_yvonne2 she is a dating coach and slumflower used to hang out with her at one point but then I believe she used a lot of Imani’s ideas to write her second book (not sure as I haven’t read that one)
