My dad used to let our old dog lick his foot when he had an ingrowing toenail. I think that's what made me feel as I do 🤢

I love dogs too much actually there better then people
Absolutely I live with 3 humans and 1 dog and he’s my favourite. Does as he’s told, never leaves me side if I’m ill and brings me a blanket when I get onto the sofa at night. Eats the food I give him despite it being the same thing every day. He is so responsive and seems to know exactly how I’m feeling.

My dog is spoilt so she goes between dog food and human food but yeah she's there for me when I'm Ill or my anxiety is playing up she's so good knowing how I'm feeling

I've a Japanese Spitz two layers of hair!! Jesus when she sheds!! I've a little trick I open the front and back doors and let the wind do most of the work then I Hoover
There’s a chap with a dog that he grooms in a field opposite me, know when he’s been brushing as it looks like snow drifts in places 😂

Such a good idea as the wildlife must use it for nests.

My dog just sheds Velcro-like hair 🙄 It gets everywhere so don’t bother wearing black if you’re visiting 😉

I have a mini Dachshund and she sleeps in a crate at the end of our bed, its got lovely fluffy blankets and bed inside and got a blanket covering the roof and sides so she just loves to burrow into it at night with a couple of treats. I dont ever close her into it either she goes in at her own choice and can come out when she wants. When we initially had her she slept in our kitchen but she hates her own company and used to howl every night so she is loving life being able to be in our bedroom but have her own space too. I would be too afraid of her with us during the night as if we rolled on her she would suffocate. But during the day she takes herself upstairs and will either go into her crate or lie at the bottom of our bed and stare out the window. In the evenings she sits on top of me on the sofa, being beside me isnt enough :)
She doesnt moult but even if she did I wouldn't care - I was raised with long hair German Sherpherds and they moulted a lot so I am well used to that situation.
My dog is my baby though, I absolutely adore her, potientially more than my partner at times!
Why do you let a mini dachshund (or any dachshund or any long backed short legged dog) go up your stairs?

I don't, I carry her up - it isn't safe for Dachshunds to go up anything it can lead to their backs having lots of issues. When I said she takes herself up it was a figure of speech...

As many have said their lives are so short, they give us so much and are quite literally the best creatures on the planet. So whatever my dog wanted she got.

Also forgot to add that I mostly WFH so I have an office upstairs in the spare room and when I am at home my dog goes into my bedroom to chill - but I work with my partner and have a little office type unit container that we work from a few days a week and my dog comes with me to work! She knows when we are going and sits beside the front door waiting to be carried into the car. We are in the office today and she is currently curled up in her bed but keeping a watchful eye on the door. Dachshunds may be small but she is the best security dog I have ever had, her bark is HUGE!
Like I say, I am obsessed with my dog. She is the best company ever, where I go she comes too!

Yes! I read a quote a while ago that said that we have a life separate from our dogs, they don’t have that, we are there whole life, they don’t have anything but us. I only got my first dog 3 years ago and I will admit that before I got him I didn’t get it, I really didn’t, thought dog people were weird. Now I have my own I fully admit I was wrong.

Also this quote from Marley & Me gets me every time. I well up.

“A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water logged stick will do just fine. A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?”

I have a golden retriever and he is allowed on the sofa. I mean how else would we cuddle while watching tv. But a hard no on the bed because he is way too big and I need my space. But he sleeps in a crate next to our bed, the crate is simply because he would get in bed if we didn't confine him.

YES!!!

my MIL has a little dog. He’s beautiful and so well behaved. He’s only allowed in the kitchen. So, when they watch telly, he sits there on his own. All the time, just in the kitchen. Why bother having him?

We have a mini wire haired dachshund, he doesn’t shed any hair....it’s amazing 😂 he’s allowed to sleep on the sofa on a blanket. He knows he’s not allowed anywhere else but often moves when one of us does to get the warmth. He sleeps in a bed on the door next to us, he’s allowed on the bed but just gets too excited and doesn’t settle so he’s never on it. Plus his little legs means he can’t get up or down on his own

Thanks for clarifying.
Ours climbs the stairs. He can’t get down though so we carry him. There’s lots of evidence that climbing and jumping actually strengthens their muscles and prevents IVDD. He has a ramp for the sofa though but will occasionally just jump down, same with the steps down to the garden....there’s no stopping him

I can’t even lie, this breaks my heart. I hate leaving my pup for work even though she’s never on her own. I can see the sadnes in her eyes as she watches me out the window 😭

I honestly love my Mabel so much more than I could ever express. As another poster said, she’s got me out of some dark times. Before I got her I never thought I’d feel love again after my mum died (she was only 56). Now I just look at her and feel love and that’s a great feeling. She gets me out the house every day and my mental health has improved massive. Anyone that says they’re just a dog doesn’t love them as they deserve.
