I hated the job I was in, I was only in it for 2 years, but it sucked the soul out of me, the atmosphere was toxic, from the moment I walked in I knew I would have a bad day, every day. Staff attitude always negative, very passive aggressive behaviour, lots of shouting across rooms but not actually talking at the person if that makes sense (lots of 'I can't be doing this, I'm too busy, some people need to get off their lazy arse' etc) never actually directed at me but it made for a hostile environment. I saw so many new staff members come and go because they saw what I could see. I could never sleep before a shift and would drive there with my heart pounding. Some staff were lovely, which is why I stayed so long, but gradually I was made to feel completely incompetent at my job, like I could do nothing right, I was given bad shifts on purpose, if I was in charge there deliberately would be nothing sorted the day before, i.e. paperwork wasn't ready which just slowed us all down, and inevitably really short staffed. If I was in charge, staff didn't listen to me, but expected me to listen to them when they were. I felt I was constantly being 'caught out', by people not telling me something I need to know, watching me slip up and have to sort the mess out myself. Anyway I had enough last year, tried to get a meeting with my boss all day but he kept putting me off, in the end I e-mailed over my notice telling them exactly when I planned to leave. Of course he told everyone the next day. I had a long notice period. They did get me a lovely gift, probably to try and convince me to go back for shifts to help out but I never went back. I did leave on a good note, professionalism and all that.
I don't think people quite understand what a toxic workplace is until you are stuck in one. The reason I couldn't leave for so long is because I genuinely was heartbroken, I thought all my hard work had been for nothing and I was made to feel that I wouldn't be good enough for anywhere else. I actually applied to a couple of supermarkets because I wanted to leave healthcare completely. My partner convinced me to apply for another healthcare job and I can say I love it. I get on really well with my colleagues, there's a positive attitude, I learn something new everyday and they really care about their employees' wellbeing. People actually help each other.
Hope everyone who was in the same position as me is inspired to apply for new positions and take the plunge!!
