Yeah I agree. I was at a dinner with work colleagues, all women, ranging from early 20s to nearly 60. A couple of the older ladies had genuine designer items - a Rolex, a Mulberry handbag, a pair of Ralph Lauren loafers - but the younger ones were all wearing fakes. There were the aforementioned Van Cleef and Cartier Love bracelets (4 in total, on the same person!), Orans, a Jacquemus bag and a Balenciaga t-shirt. I get it - I love posh tit, I understand that people want nice, fancy things, but yeah, like you, I just don't know.....

Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for a trend and I love my Marc Jacobs tote and LV Wallet on chain, but everything seems so common and "normal" nowadays the rush and excitement for designer items has been lost

I think that's why I've steered away from the Neverfull types (was always the bag on my absolute wishlist) and gone for the Loewe basket ibiza in the crazy yellow and newer (to me) brands such as Maje in the 70s crochet orange because there aren't the fakes of those, yet!

Yes I have the fake celine belt but when in Spain recently I could've got a plethora of faux bags - I used to when younger, but they've lost their appeal as have the real versions of the ones so commonly faked

It is interesting and I’d read a thread about it! I’m wondering if perhaps millennials wouldn’t be seen dead in such obvious fakes (Celine belts aside ) but Gen Z don’t care so much? Or are they just too young to be aware of how it looks to have £20k+ worth of jewellery stacked up your arm in your 20s? Personally I’d be cringing for them but maybe I am just a staid millennial

I know those tiktok videos that are like “things I see and always assume are fake” get a ton of backlash but these items are always the super hyped ones you end up seeing everywhere so it’s inevitable?

I think there’s been slightly more backlash against it with de influencing stuff trickling down from the hyper consuming fast fash hauling huns to luxury with “Dior but no front door” being a thing ppl say now - and I’m always conscious of any #discourse becoming classist tho. But idk the whole thing doesn’t sit well with me?

@Dizzy interesting point re age too, you’re right re age and being measured. But it makes me die to think there must be at least one 20 something with low impulse control with £tens of thousands sat on a >20% APR card because of the recent spate of this content. I know that’s a them problem but idk, in the same way you’d have to be regulated to give financial/investments advice surely when products are priced at this point there should be some equivalent to protect consumers? The same would apply to someone promoting cars, like the stakes are SO high influencer content/marketing (and afaik Hermès aren’t paying these girls? But it’s convenient how many of them end up with bags…?) doesn’t feel remotely appropriate for it. Let ppl live and make good choices for them, the 0.3% who these bags are for know about them we don’t need YouTube content

THIS !! So many people have the bracelets and watches as fakes and when they wear them just look ridiculous due to the actual worth of them !! Could you imagine a normal 20 something year old being able to afford £50k worth of Van cleef

I know I couldn’t afford my first piece of designer jewellery until I was in my late twenties yet looking at the generation below they’ve got it all by 22 apparently

I think a lot of it stems from most are still living at home at that age.
This current generation are living at home with their parents no bills to pay so spend all their money on designer brands they see on instagram rather than save a deposit for a home.

I must admit once I came into having a more disposable income I wanted all the nice things. I used to spend spend spend until I realised I would rather be financially secure.

This is assuming that the items are genuine. Not sure if anyone else has seen the massive DHGate/Saramart hauls that are popular on Tiktok now and you'll literally have someone buying multiple bags/shoes/accessories, all 'labelled' to look as if they have money. Not even just the obvious fake/dupe places either, there are a lot of smaller independent companies that produce dupes now as well, especially VC&A and Cartier. It's just been made so accessible because you can't really believe that the younger generation actually has £1000 to drop on a current trend, multiple times

I know ppl have free will but idk, influencer content is so insidious and prays upon people’s insecurities. And yes some people will stretch themselves for a £1k bag and that’s also not gr8 but is still recoverable, as the stakes rise it’s just concerning to see this content growing exponentially in a vacuum of honesty? Like again an age old issue with influencers - and this applies to houses and #renos too - but I do wish the girls creating this content would say look I don’t need to pay for a house deposit or school fees or pension so my salary is just for discretionary spending and excessive consumption lbr. Because there will be women that miss out on ever having these things because they never clocked. These things are not normal, and not needed, like the ultimate luxury is financial security at the end of the day but this never gets discussed, or even an honourable mention. Then again every month it comes out that an influencer or reality star girly was living far beyond their means so maybe they’re ducked too.

this bit i especially agree with. mentioned a few months ago that i was thinking of a ysl bag for my 21st but now i'm completely off the idea and am saving towards driving lessons instead. i actually had some money from a passed relative that would completely cover the cost but it just didn't appeal anymore. now i'm in uni i've seen a few girls with valentino bags and dior book totes and i just immediately assume they're fake? although it's actually the boys i see in designer clothes most often which surprised me, but they're likely fakes too.

i'd also much rather purchase something when i feel like i've earned it rather than just because, so might look at bags again once i've graduated or get a post uni job. also appreciating the little but often things a bit more, going out for a year of nice meals or getting my nails done semi regularly brings more joy than a branded bag right now, and i'll only get one when i can comfortably do both without guilt!

Just to offer a different perspective, honestly though, it might be where I’ve grown up or the people I’m surrounded by, but it’s quite normal to have Cartier/Van cleef bracelets and designer bags when you’re young, bought by your parents. I spent a lot of time in the UAE as well, and its not uncommon to see Chanel bags on young women or stacks of diamond jewellery or a Rolex on a 20 something year old. It is definitely very different in England!

Of course, if you’re working a part time, low wage job with a mortgage and kids and you have 3 VCA bracelets on, you’re not fooling anyone haha, I agree with you guys. But I’m sure people look at me (a student, who dresses casually, often no makeup, usually in scrubs ), and think my stuff is fake. But that’s fine, I probably don’t fit their usual image of someone who wears expensive designer jewellery but it won’t stop me wearing any of it

this is my stack today sorry if it’s basic as duck

I love the honesty there - and to be honest I don't really think of people like that !!

I'm trying to get myself out there with my own graphics business as well as working full time as an engineer and I still can't afford VC&A or Chanel lol, but one can dream !!

Yes it seems bigger in person than in photos, I have the thin version as well and prefer it because it’s easier to take off and put on myself. The regular version is such a hassle!

my cousin has the thin love bracelet and thin juste un clou, it really suits her because she’s quite petite and has tiny wrists! I hope you get it! it’ll be a lovely promotion present to yourself

I agree. As much as I can’t stand her it shocks me how much influence she has on people. A lot won’t admit it but I doubt some people (more so young people) would’ve even heard of VCA/purchased from there if it wasn’t for her going on about it so much

How do you know they were fake?! I own some of the real items on your list and unless it was an awful fake, I’m not sure I would actually notice! I have a friend with the fake version of the Oran’s and annoyingly, they are near enough identical to my real pair!

Completely agree that fakes are wrong for so many reasons but they’re my friends so I’m not gonna read them the riot act.
