I´m curious about the new video she´s been announcing about her becoming a full time writer. Has she published anything apart from her poetry collection? I wonder if she´ll mention her influencer status as a contributing factor, since - let´s be honest - without that she would have never become as successful
I’m only 6 minutes into the video and she’s already talking about how “edgy” she was as a child because she collected bugs, wrote a poem called blood on a wine glass and a short story about a father dying and killing other people on Christmas Eve because he was drunk driving. In her own words: “what 8 year old thinks of that?”. Any girl who has ever played with Barbie’s has come up with more messed up story lines lol.

Not gonna continue it now bc it’s probably gonna be all about the imaginary world in which she’s a gifted and respected poet and I find it hard to believe she’ll acknowledge people don’t really follow her for being a writer but for her clothes and aesthetic.
---
Though I must add: it is very nice to learn she’s worked at a supermarket for 7 years (from the age of 15) in order to save some money to be able to move to Melbourne and write, it’s refreshing to see at least one influencer who’s done an honest day’s work in their lives.

These are the things that are valuable if you hope to be an artist who wants to connect with your audience, more honesty and less “I eat god” bs.

It’s really been getting on my nerves how Dakota’s been getting invited to all these film premieres when she has never been or marketed herself as a film person. Until recently, a few months ago when she started doing monthly book & film reports. When you listen to her “reviews”, it really just seems like a marketing ploy in order to get her invited to events. Really shows how “consumption” of certain types of media is really just all about the appearances and aesthetics.
Coincidentally the same thing is happening to Jack Edwards lol, all of a sudden they’re cinephiles. I assume film events are way “cooler” than the literary ones, also with films being 2 hours long on average it’s much easier to be inside the latest trend than it is when it comes to books

Long time lurker here. I don´t have tt so I don´t know what she posts on there, but I follow her on ig. I can´t add much to what´s been already written about her, it´s spot on imho. One thing that especially bothers me with her though is her whole religion schtick. I read somewhere that she grew up catholic and "has religious trauma from catholic school" and I suppose that´s where all this comes from. Spirituality is a highly personal thing so I can´t say whether she´s religious or not, but seeing her posts and the type of stuff she says I personally don´t think she is, at least not catholic. And I also can´t speak for her trauma about catholic school, but to me it feels like she uses her "catholic background" and catholicism/christianity as an aesthetic/part of her aesthetic and frankly I find that a bit tasteless, especially if she supposedly has trauma associated with it. I think many people who are not from a (historically) catholic country/don´t know catholics etc. don´t really know much about catholicims or catholic schools and I feel like she plays into that a bit in front of her followers. Also, the McCauley twins in The Secret History grew up catholic (iirc) and with her glorification of Camilla and the book as a whole it makes all the more sense to me why she made all this such a part of her persona.

The way she wants to be perceived as a serious writer but still clings onto a 2022 goodreads choice awards nomination… you’d think it’s the booker prize 😭

And highlighting the bCreator award, which is essentially a rigged vanity awards show organised and judged by mid British talent agencies to give own roster of Z-list influencers and employees an ego boost. All you have to do is be signed at Sixteenth and you'll be nominated for a bCreator award in a random category.

It's a glorified 'Employee of the Year' corpo party and talent has no place there. I'd be beyond embarrassed to have that as the sole highlight of my writing career if I were Dakota.

Even as a detractor of Dakota I have to admit she had a gorgeous sequence of posts on her story:

IMG_3893.jpeg

She’s thankful that her life is beautiful all the time, and she knows that there is God in everything.

Naturally, what can you follow that with?

IMG_3894.jpeg

Of course, squatting over the floor in tighty whities, then posting this “taking a shit in the woods” selfie to Instagram.

The entire group are in their 20s cosplaying The Secret History, how are you 25 and pretending to have done a bacchanal when in reality you’ve sat round with ur rich friends and drank expensive wine. Get your own identity because because the Secret History is a satire on the people you’re trying to emulate
Sometimes I wonder how Donna Tartt feels about an entire generation making her book a hit again only for the point to fly completely over their heads.

It is to be expected when you write satire I guess, the thing is she wasn’t even subtle with it and made fun of the characters all throughout the book, I don’t understand how so many people idolize them. If these people were teenagers maybe, but now fully grown adults.

Dakota reminds me sooo much of the circa. 2016 cult Tumblr poet/Soundcloud rapper Ginger Bronson (aka Kayla Day), to the point where I think she's deliberately copying her. She was influential for a bit on what used to be called 'nymphet Tumblr.' If anyone has her full poetry book to hand it would probably be interesting to run through it and look for actual duplicate sentences. The main points:
  • Run-on sentences with deliberately questionable syntax - Dakota example "New York air hangs hot and thick even though the dog days are behind us and September says we're older now and the cigarettes threaten to age us & I haven't called my mother in weeks and you said I should be ashamed of that," vs. one of many Ginger examples "Bloody noses cherry poptarts always breaking down pick up truck in the front sucking my thumb whiskey they drank by the fire while us girls watched from the porch & talked about the things we’d lost…n my baby like sand in the rain, just getting further away"
  • Romanticising of religious rural origins which are largely played-up (Dakota's got the Australian Bible Belt, Ginger wrote loads about a meth-infused upbringing in North-West Alabama, which turned out to all be fake)
  • Edgy language combining infantilised 'girlhood' with grotesque imagery, knives, drugs, etc. Loads of 'bad boys' and bar fights. Many mentions of 'gods,' praying, standard Christian/Catholic motifs. 'Feral' stuff (GB had a 'feral community' on Tumblr when her URL was bedbones)
  • Skinny messy vintage aesthetic, inspired by Courtney Love (GB is the cover image in this Cut article, was scouted to walk for Hedi Slimane when she was blonde). Similar makeup and a lot of vintage lingerie and fur
When I saw this para I literally thought it was Ginger lol:
Took the host on my tongue which is a big deal for me because I am a hypochondriac freak at the best of times and have always taken it in my hands. I like to feel the weight of the flesh of Christ in my own palm before I let it melt on my own tongue. Consecrate myself. Bless myself. Forgive myself. Save myself. I've always been a hands-on girl. Maybe a little too independent. I digress. Priest put the host on my tongue and I swear to God I could taste it. Love. I mean it, I felt the love spread from that wafer right through my veins. Static, from navel to nape. Cried in the pews and lingered for a while.
Spoilering for too many images and possible TW (violence/suicide/ED language) but it's all very 'On Sun Swallowing':

GB disappeared from the internet a few years ago but there are Lolcow and Soundcloud archives of her work, and most of her Tumblr is still accessible via Wayback Machine. She did have a few genuinely memorable tongue-in-cheek song lyrics and at least took inspiration from poets like Richard Siken instead of other Internet peers. Dakota's work looks incredibly unoriginal to anyone who has been in those Tumblr circles for five minutes, I don't know how she expects to sell books to anyone older than 15. Also it's hilarious to see her take this style and aesthetic from a notorious but relatively underground Tumblr scene to the influencer sphere, with management and sponsored trips to the Booker Awards and Hay Festival...

And it's unrelated, but the callout for press coverage is so funny and unprofessional. Demonstrates a total lack of understanding of how the press works. She needs to be emailing a proper release to journalists in that sphere, with evidence of her impact - surely her management could have helped with this? And the 'tight turnaround' thing is absolutely not up to her, it's up to the editor at the 'credible platform,' who will decide with the journalist if/when the article is newsworthy. If it's so vague that she doesn't even know whether it's an essay, review or feature, then it may well end up sitting in a queue for weeks to months!

wish this thread was more active lol, I agree as someone who was very active on Grunge Tumblr (circa 2013-2016) that she is so incredibly unoriginal, but then again I see things everywhere on TikTok I also saw on Tumblr 12 years ago 😭
I feel like she’s just become too repetitive for it to be active 😭 other than the dog whistles all she ever does is try to pretend like she’s this chaotic intelectual while she’s actually just another internet influencer. If you read the first few pages that’s pretty much still the same thing, no growth at all.

Also if you look up her poetry book on goodreads the community reviews with some actual commentary are hating it, while her braindead fans are leaving 5 stars and talking more about how they love dakota, instead of talking about the actual poetry from the book

New driking game: take a shot everytime she writes something along the lines of "i met god"
Or mentions the following: girlhood, pomegranates, flesh, blood, teeth, bones, purity/impurity, “erotic”, feral, God is dead. Add in random italics and all-caps sentences in red font, and you’ve got yourself a Dakota Warren poem.

Her book recommendations really look like those of a teenage girl who just discovered classic books.

How are you a writer who has (does she yet?) a degree in literature and the most you can come up with for gothic fiction is Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Angela Carter, Edgar Allan Poe, Carmilla and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

Those are a given when you’re talking about the genre and do not need to be recommended, much less from someone who makes a living out of books. Come on, she could, at the very least, sprinkle some Matthew Lewis and Charlotte Dacre in there.

Also around the end of the video she talks about Jane Eyre and gives spoiler.
She reveals something that is not revealed in the book until the very end.

If you are "recommending" a book, why do you say what happens in the end?!

Ive already read Jane Eyre but if I havent, I wouldnt wanna know about the plot twist/s.

That is fair. She's just so interesting from a PR/marketing perspective. Far from rich/connected enough for people to follow for the unattainable lifestyle, too rich/connected to be relatable to the average person, too old for edgy teenager content, too young for unconventional professional content. Curated, but non-evolving style. No unique career/lifestyle. This is absolutely no hate to her, I am just mostly intrigued how she manages to have a significant following when she doesn't quite fit in any niche. I am curious how she started out.
It’s mostly just people who are into the girlhood/blood/tsh/pomegranates aesthetic. She started cashing in on it during the pandemic, when it was really popular, but she definitely doesn’t have the same level of attention now as she once did.

Also, she’s recently made a switch, and her TikTok has become sort of a “daily journal,” which I assume is an attempt to sell herself as a writer in anticipation of her novel. But you’ll notice her engagement has dropped off since then, even though she still uses those aesthetic videos to draw attention to the words.

So the short answer would be just that: aesthetics. Her poetry book did better than expected because it’s very Instagrammable. Every time she shares her writing, there’s either a picture or a specific type of formatting to make it more palatable (i.e., aesthetic) for her audience. Which makes me really curious to see how her novel will do, just words on a page, without all that fluff attached to it.

has anyone else noticed how insanely white her book recommendations are or is it just me? This isn't something I typically notice or point out but after looking through a few of her book recommendation videos it seems more and more like a very glaring omission to barely include any authors of colour...How are you going to have gothic horror recommendations "to rule them all" but no Toni Morrison or Octavia Butler? (Beloved is one of the BEST "horror" books I have ever read and I honestly believe no list on gothic horror is complete without it).

She does understand that classic literature isn't just white authors right.......right?........

Can we also talk about how she insists on her followers referring to her as “Lady” Dakota? She’s unreal 🤣 I don’t remember but I’m 90% sure she did one of those novelty things where you buy a speck of land in Scotland which grants you a “lord” or “lady” title and has taken it too seriously.
No wonder she and the gas mask guy get along so well 😂 Both have illusions about grandeur

I really don’t understand her obsession with girlhood. I admit that it can be an interesting topic, but this quote alone „Hell is a teenage girl“ is just so damn cringey. She’s almost the same age as me 🤦‍♀️

She said in her most recent video that she only speaks English. Something like: "I'm just a boring English speaker." I may watch it again and post the other words I noticed she had mispronounced.
Please do lol. This is seeming more like a devil’s advocate page than a snark page at the moment. I definitely skipped through a bunch of the vid, which is why the quantity of mispronunciations she managed to pack in is so impressive.

If she spoke any language other than English even at a low level, you can trust she would be bashing us over the head with “As a bilingual,” in every other video.

Instead her refrain alternates between “As a writer,” “As an artist,” “As a creative,” “As a literature student.”

The fact that she keeps referring to herself as an “artist” is hilarious.
