Usually just find the attempts to be edgy more or less amusing, but I find the lobotomy references to be in extraordinarily bad taste. It's just so...ugh. I guess that screenshot is from gasmask guy's social media? (I can't find it on Dakota's).
It’s from his instagram. Totally agree about the lobotomy thing, coincidentally I’ve just gone on a rabbit role on TikTok about Rosemary Kennedy and the way her family completely destroyed her life with a lobotomy, she was such a bright and lively person, which didn’t fit the “perfect woman” standards of the time and certainly not the standards of a family who aimed to climb to the top.

The “lobotomy eyes” trend and making fun of the procedure and mental disorders is in such bad taste, not a surprise she and her friends would be a part of it. This was the caption btw:

She recommended Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin in a video about… queer lit – *gasp*. Her recs are as basic as it gets. I love Giovanni's Room and it’s one of my favorite books but if you're making a living in the literary world it feels kinda lazy to stick with the same old famous titles and not explore more.

It's like she's playing the market, knowing her audience prefers to look literary without diving into the deep cuts. Or maybe she genuinely thinks she's a total rebel just because she's not pushing Colleen Hoover's books. Idk which is worse.
Dakota does not read much at all. I could write 10 paragraphs about how she doesn’t read but suffice to say usually when she describes books she’s “read” there is no analysis—instead she reads the blurb, gives a totally unrepresentative summary, recites buzzwords e.g. unhinged woman, or generalizes about the literature of an entire region (e.g. “this is Latin American literature so you know it’s going to be dark and erotic and twisted.” “This is Russian literature so you know it’s going to be bleak and depressing.” Like tf? The only book you’ve read is Frankenstein. What are you talking about.)

Other than that it’s evidence enough that when she went away with notorious non-reader Jack Edwards even he commented that every time Dakota tried to read she literally fell asleep.

She’s not playing the market, she simply just doesn’t read enough to provide any more than the most basic recommendations. There’s a reason she doesn’t have a goodreads linked when practically every other booktuber does.

this last video was particularly obnoxious because she’s like “I recommend books over and over to drive it home!” No, it’s because you read a Poe story in high school and that’s sustaining your recommendations to this day.

The fact that she uploaded a nearly 1 hour long video breaking down how she became a published poet... sis we all know it's because you're an "aesthetic" influencer and you get by on YouTube sponsorships and adsense.

The whole religious trauma thing is definitely bc it’s trendy on the internet right now. Coming from a Catholic country and family it’s pretty easy to spot someone who’s into the aesthetic that’s connected to Catholicism but doesn’t like the actually being religious part vs. someone who grew up in the religion.

These people have divided themselves in two categories: weirdo trad larpers who are adult converts and internet famous girls who think liking red is a personality trait. It’s not rare for them to interpolate from time to time, soon enough they’ll be going for the Orthodox Church if they haven’t already lol.

Btw, I found this incredible review on her book that pretty much encapsulates (and adds to) the discussion here: https://baudrillardbaby.substack.com/p/algorithm-as-artwork-a-review-of?sd=pf

I found the made-for-profit aspect of it very interesting, at first I had the impression Dakota was simply too chronically online to separate her art from internet aesthetics but it makes a lot of sense that she would capitalize on this very aesthetic and sell her artistry out as a result.

cost of living but make it aesthetic. Her starving artist act is so cringe, she's always travelling so clearly isn't short of money
I wonder if she ever sits down and wonders who she really is because this whole act seems absolutely exhausting to keep up with even in the name of “romanticizing your life”.

She’s probably fishing for more The Secret History comparisons, the time when Richard almost died of hypothermia because he was so broke he had to rent a room with a hole in the ceiling during the winter in Vermont comes to mind, but you know, it’s dArK aCaDeMiA.

Thanks for providing the caption—comes off like gas mask wants to put all the responsibility on Dakota as if it isn't his own account where he has full control of what goes on there.
It's like deep down they're both aware it's very crass to mock this subject but are too committed to being seen as edgy to just not go there and also too afraid to fully take responsibility for any backlash they might receive from their 'edginess' (gas mask stating it's Dakota's idea and Dakota not posting it on her own account). I think this evasion of responsibility also nullifies the 'edginess' (sorry for overusing this term lol) because neither are willing to fully stand by the offensiveness but want to minimize it. (Hope this makes sense.)
(Also: Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter is a really well-written, informative book about her story if you're interested in a deeper dive)

Her going on about this Goodreads award nomination is embarrassing. It’s not the bloody Pulitzer Prize. It’s a glorified social media popularity contest. Her entire writing career has been based off having a specific social media aesthetic with a creepy cult following. I guarantee no one in the actual publishing industry knows who she is, or gives a shit.

Side note, but she gives me unwashed vibes. Like, I imagine she’s the type of person to sit with her shoes on the couch, or go to bed without brushing her teeth. And the glorification of smoking is so disgusting.

This is the same person who hangs their underwear on their lamp for the AeStHeTiCs of slutty academia, my first thought isn't satire tbh, it's a desperate attempt to appear quirky and different.

I doubt she would sell anything - be it her poetry or the book she is writing - without her social media following and in connection to that her extreme way of playing into certain aesthetics. None of her interests/antics seem genuine to me. She plays herself up to be this dark academiaesque unhinged catholic guilt literary mysterious woman, but she just a tumblr girl in real life who has read too much The Secret History

She also recently deleted a tiktok video in which she did a Brigitte Bardot makeup look after people pointed out in the comments she’s a notorious bigot and racist.
she also did a "lobotomy eyes" makeup tutorial and said people always tell her she looks like she's had one, interestingly it was around the time lobotomy core (I know) was a thing so she was deffo lying because who would ever tell someone that but the fact she did a makeup tutorial based on it is...yikes

Dakota tries to portray a progressive image on social media but she gives me “no politics on the table” vibes. Probably someone who read the passage about Henry Winter not knowing about the moon landing and thought it was cool and aspirational instead of pathetic lol.
this is why it makes me cringe so much that she'd modelled her entire look and aesthetic off Camilla, either she didn't understand the book and she's not as smart as she would suggest or she understood it was a satire and has still chosen to still base her personality off an incestual victim of the male gaze and idk which is worse

This is funny since she became famous for her clothes/overall style instead of her art. I wonder wether truly believes that all of those teens who follow her care that much about her poetry and book recommendations or if she understands she’s a product of micro internet trends after all.

Also, the article states she’s 24, it’s insane she’s older than me, I’ve always thought she was 20 at most because of the way she acts like an infatuated girl who just found out tumblr is a thing.
