The Hidden Children of Ruinerwold Farm is on BBC 4 tonight @ 10pm.
4-part documentary about a guy in The Netherlands, convinced the World was going to end, he kept his kids locked in a basement until one managed to escape.

My grandma was one. I wasn’t aware it was so culty until after she died. I know there was disapproval in the family because the story goes that they preyed on her after my grandad died. She used to say some strange things like they could make fake blood from coconuts so we don’t need blood transfusions.

Oddly, other than the belief that blood was bad and belief in the judgement day stuff she didn’t seem to subscribe to much else. She would give us cards for birthdays and Christmas but her work around for it was that it wasn’t a Christmas or birthday card, it was just a notelet with a picture of a flower on it with money inside. 😂 bless her. She also told 3 members of my family they should terminate their pregnancy. Two for being too young and one because they were having an affair and it wasn’t their partners baby.

On her deathbed, my auntie begged her to get a blood transfusion and she accepted. She also asked a friend of the family who was Anglican to give her funeral service. I’m not sure if any JWs came to her funeral or not. I’m guessing that it depends on the area how ‘on it’ the JWs are. I heard something on a podcast about people who go to the hospital to bully the sick person into not accepting blood. There was never any talk of us being cut off for not being JWs ourselves. From our POV though the whole thing was more of an eye roll situation than a genuine concern. Sounds like we were very lucky.

The JW parents I know have not cut out their children for leaving? I’m not criticising what you say, just saying what I know from my own family members.

JW, it’s a tough one for me. I have family who are JW. They came to it later in life. As such their kids did go to services when they were younger but once they had the choice, they didn’t. They are very much of the opinion we chose to join, they have the right to choose also. They came to our church wedding, even though we said we understood if they felt that they couldn’t. Their response was we are family, why would we miss your wedding? They’re absolutely lovely people. As are the people I’ve met from their congregation.

I guess it’s like all religions, there’s a spectrum. From those who believe and follow but still have a foot in the real world, to those who wont go near anyone who is not like them or spread hatred towards anyone who doesn’t believe.

Cults, I feel there is in general no spectrum of belief. You’re either all in or you’re not.

Although talking about the end of the world, I do find it hilarious that they have loads of sleeping bags and camping equipment for when the end comes 😆

The girl who was at our school was very open about how restrictive their life was and was eye-opening. No telly or radio. She had to cycle home for lunch every day because she couldn't eat her lunch with non believers. Also, they couldn't share plumbing or sewerage with non believers which means most of them live in detached houses (as did the family who lived on our street) and she couldn't use the toilets at school.

I grew up in an area with a lot of Exclusive Brethren. AFAIK the Aussie sect is the strictest in terms of control and influence over their members, and also the global HQ currently.

There’s been tax raids recently as their business affairs are sketchy. They have a published principle called “spoiling the Egyptians” which basically means they intend to fleece all non-EB people and businesses for what they’re worth which is obviously sketchy in the context of how frequently they win government contracts for things like school maintenance.

You’d see lots of women at the local mall with their little headscarves, long hair and long skirts. And at school they’d have to go home for lunch. They didn’t continue on past the legal age for leaving school so missed out on their last few years of education.

We had a guy come to build a stair rail for us, and he’d just been employed as a kind of odd job man for the Brethren (there’s a big community nearby) The guy that he dealt with wasn’t always sticking to the strict rules apparently.

Just watched the Twin Flames one on Netflix. All quite strange how they got so involved. I wonder if the people featured had a lot more going on in their lives before they joined which made them more susceptible to falling for it. It was all so shallow from the start it never seemed to explain how they got properly drawn in. Especially the with the twin Sister.
