Totally agree with all the drama- I follow craftsnark on Reddit and the amount of drama that is discussed on there is unreal- in crafting it’s not exactly something I tend to think about! I don’t sell anything- I may branch out into writing and selling patterns at some point- I must admit people who have only just tried a craft and think they’re sellable do infuriate me, but not enough to cause a fuss!

The AI posts really annoy me. I followed one page who shares their own work and also shares AI generated images and I had to unfollow. It just goes against everything about the crafts we are interested in...being handmade, creative and not perfection.
I've also seen a lot of chat on craft pages about acrylic yarn vs natural fibres and if you use acrylic its seen as a sin! People should just buy whatever yarn they want. Not everyone has the sane budget.
I agree. It is either going to make people feel sad that they can't live up to an impossible standard, or the poster will get praise for work they didn't do. Handmade goods will have little quirks in it, it is part of what makes them unique.
Yarn can be pretty darn expensive. I am not going to be upset over what someone wants to use.
Being in the Northeast I am lucky enough to be able to go to a Boyes store. They have a large yarn section ( alongside all the other random household and craft stuff they sell).
I have to be careful because it is very easy to just buy random balls of pretty colours without a specific project in mind. When I first started I got caught out and bought some random things that aren't really enough to make anything with.
However saying that, I did get some really nice and soft yarns from them before Xmas. They had been marked down as only a few left in each dye batch, so I grabbed a few to go in scarfs and snoods for people.
I am alsoguilty of buying yarn with no plan.
But today I found this CAL called a stitch sampler by Hooked on Homemade Happiness and the idea is you learn a new stitch each week and use your stash. I think it is ideal for me as most projects I have done are very simple stitches so I can expand my knowledge of stitches and use up the yarn I have.
I plan to do the CAL after my current project. It might be an idea for anyone who wants a stash busting project.
My very sweet boyfriend made me a gift basket of nice things for my birthday, some tea and chocolate I like, a new book, a cute soft toy etc...
He also put in 3 balls of 50g cotten yarn. I thought this was a very sweet thing to do, but he obviously doesn't understand how much yarn things need. He has seen me admiring cotten yarn in stores and then putting it down because it is expensive. I don't make soft toys either, so small balls are of no use to me.
I have decided to use this as an excuse to buy some cotten yarn to add to it and make something. I have picked up some more, and I should have enough for a nice shawl or a baby blanket. I am looking forward to trying it.

I crochet. Love it so much. Have a very small instagram page and sell locally to friends and colleagues and the odd friend of a friend.
The crochet community is usually mostly lovely. There’s on business / page now advertising learn how to crochet packs and YouTube - except she’s blocked me and other crochet pages. I know this as other crochet pages / accounts have asked me if shes blocked me too. It’s odd.

I was prompted to make this cover for my wicker basket after losing items from it on windy days 
also to put off any potential thieves grabbing my purse.
I found this pretty cotton offcut in a charity shop and I've got enough left to make something else

The Aldi Yarn Wars are back. It was the craft event and I don't like what it brings out in people. Saw one person in my group posting a haul picture that took up their entire bed, and then saying that they had 13 storage boxes of yarn already so it would just be put away until they need it.
Lots of people bragging about how much they have bought, but then also asking for help as they don't know what to do with it.
This morning I saw someone asking about how often the events happen and mentioning that they were not ' allowed ' to go again, the comments were all really nasty and saying things like 'are you a child?' And ' please sir, can I go to Aldi', as if some people are not on a budget.
I really dislike how craft communities encourage over consumption and hoarding of supplies, and people try and one up each other.
I have to much, mostly because when I started crochet I didn't understand how much yarn I needed for things, so I have to much or to little of some things. I am making an effort to get through it all this year. I know it is a very easy hobby to over buy for, and sometimes you do buy something because price is good and you put it away for later. But I have seen people hoarding entire rooms full of yarn they will never use in a million years.
I think I get so annoyed about this as I know I struggle from impulse control with buying, and I really have to fight the urge to binge shop when I am stressed or down, so it really gets to me seeing people encouraging each other to do it.
Re the Aldi yarn; my Mr was in and a lady got lots of each colour and said to him "I don't even need it". Their yarn is lovely but I still have lots to use up.
I bought a couple of random balls last time in the Aldi yarn event and I didn't realise how nice it was but didn't really get enough to make anything with it so I kind of understand the need to buy a lot of it if you see it. Its a shame they don't just sell it all the time or at least have it on special offer more than once every six months.

I think that in some countries they do have it in most of the time. That would make things better, but I don't think our stores have the space.
The bragging about how much people can buy is what gets to me. It makes people feel bad because they can't compete and it encourages others to buy buy buy to keep up with them.

I'm trying to use my stash this year. It isnt a huge stash but it is easy to see how people get carried away. When I first started I bought a kit for a CAL which wasnt my style at all but I was so excited that I could crochet anything at all. If I didnt buy that kit I wouldnt have much in my stash 
I also err on the side of caution and buy too much for projects. I have found some good stash busting projects and in the last few weeks I made flowers for my Mum for Mother's Day all from my stash. I think having a massive room of yarn would give me such anxiety!
On a local facebook group a woman was asking for yarn to make blankets for charity while she was recovering from surgery so I gave her a bag full and she was delighted with them.

yes I know what you mean - the buying for buyings sake is a big issue for the world.
I make my own clothes, some sewers have obscene amounts of fabric.
The Aldi wooden toy event was similar. I think honestly some people do need to sit down, think and really consider whether they actually do need to take all 10 of one item when there's only 10 in the shop and it's not coming back, especially when those items are much more affordable than they would be in a 'permanent' store (that was the thing with the wooden toys, a lot of people were comparing with brands like Jo Jo Maman Bebe or Mamas and Papas and their toys are double if not triple the price). I agree about over-buying. I have yarn from when I first started crocheting that I'll likely never use and should give away or to charity, and now I only buy for specific projects or if I know for certain I can make something with the yarn.
My last big projects were the Jamie Crow Persian tiles blanket in the eastern jewels colourway (I've done the original colours before) and a granny square blanket in 70s orange and peach type colours for my friend's baby. I'm chuffed I've managed to use almost all the leftover stash on another Jamie Crow pattern (magical lanterns), I've done 110 of 157 pieces, although I'll probably have to buy yarn to join them with.

I recently used up almost all my mismatched yarns (was given quite a lot when someone I know died, plus a few random balls I'd bought but didn't love) making a big crocheted basket to keep my knitting and crochet stuff in! It was very fun to do, using 4 or 5 yarns together to make a thick, stiff fabric so that the basket stands up on its own.
I personally get much more of a thrill out of using up what I have rather than buying and hoarding materials. I'm now working on some socks using bamboo yarn, and won't buy any more for another project until I've finished these socks.
