Surely you need a ticket or tap your card when entering or leaving a station? My husband uses the underground everyday for work and just taps his card. I rarely use cash but I do pay with a card rather than my phone.

I used to be a catering hostess on trains and part of my duties were checking tickets. In urban areas, such as West Midlands, Greater Manchester, London, Brighton and West Yorkshire, there are ticket barriers as you board and alight. But in other parts of the country, such as York, Durham, Burton On Trent and many more, there are no fixed gates and it is easy to hop on to a train with no ticket and only buy if challenged, thanks to "advances" in technology.

If there were ticket purchasing facilities at the end of your journey, you would have been expected to buy a ticket there for the journey you had made.
But why would you when nobody is checking. And you've finished your journey.
That's no different than loading your trolley up with groceries and just strolling out the door because no one is on the door to stop you ie shoplifting/theft
It's becoming a regular occurrence to be stuck behind someone struggling to pay for food,ticket or petrol because of some problem with their phone. And them not having any other form of payment. Wtf is wrong with people, it's been people of all ages as well. It actually turns my stomach seeing people pay by their phones.
There are more and more places that are card only . I boycott them. Someone told me easyjet flights are card only.

Since the introduction of self service checkouts and people using their own bags I often see people not paying for shopping

Turns your stomach!! Hahaha. How strange. If people are happy to use their phones, that's up to them. I mostly shop online, rarely visit a shop. It takes 2 seconds for me to tap in my security code and see how much is in my bank account. I would have to drive to a cash machine otherwise. Times have moved on.

I always think this when I see big issue sellers, I generallt have some cash with me but it is usually a £10/20 note in case of an emergency so I haven't bought it in years. In London all the designated buskers in the tube have card machines but I always feel a bit wary of these tbh
We've not had one power cut yet. I'd better not speak too soon though!Can you imagine if all those power cuts predicted during the winter had actually happened
I'm in Central London so this is really disruptive!
Apparently the use of cash is increasing Cash makes a comeback as average spender withdrew £1,500 last year (telegraph.co.uk) Some of this is due to the cost of living crisis. It's easier to budget when you have cold hard cash in your hand. Also the savings pots that people are starting for different treats also encourages people to use cash. I know that you can set up online pots but it just isn't the same as actually counting out your cash
