The sun shone for me once more when Pamela fell pregnant. This was not by design, as we hadn't even discussed children yet, but I was thrilled by the news.

I had long ago reconciled myself to the thought that I would never have children, which clearly wasn't an option with Billie. The idea of becoming a father at my age was an unexpected surprise, but one that I relished.

I was adamant that Pamela and I should be married before the baby arrived. With the annulment of my marriage taking far longer than I'd hoped because of Billie's resistance, I agreed to admit adultery and be the guilty party in the eyes of the law.

My lawyer told me that this would be achieved by the tried and tested practice of sending us to spend the night together in a hotel, so that our names on the register would confirm our night of mortal sin to her lawyers.

I thought we'd find a suitable and not too expensive hotel close to home, but Pamela had other ideas. 'Let's go into London and make a night of it,' she said, excitedly, and I hadn't the heart to refuse.

What he did was great at a time we all needed some good news. But I felt then it all became exploited and it’s becoming clearer why that happened. How shameful.

I would bet money on her orchestrating the whole thing from the start. “I know Dad, why don’t you start walking up the garden, back and forth for charity, for the NHS, in the pandemic.” She runs a PR firm, had the right contacts and it snowballed from there.

I’m not saying the nhs charities don’t do good work, staff moral and support is vital but all along it was played out as if Cap Tom was saving the nhs itself and funding actual medical care when it went to the nhs charity which isn’t allowed to spend it on care, and as far as I’m remember not allowed to spend it on ppe either!

I loathe this ‘staff morale’ bit when we all know the way to raise staff morale is to pay them properly and fund the NHS properly so they’re not doing the work of three people. They don’t need quiet rooms and wide screen televisions- stop freezing their pay!!! Ok I’ll get off my soapbox for two minutes until I get annoyed off again.

Exactly. During the first lockdown a bakery local to me did boxes of cakes and afternoon teas and you could buy an extra box and they’d give them to the staff at the local hospital. So people willingly bought the boxes thinking they’d be given to the doctors, nurses, midwives etc but they went straight to the management I don’t think the staff in the thick of it all even got a crumb.

The thing is, that’s a nice gesture and most of us wanted to help in any way we could but cakes and teas aren’t what clinical staff need. They need a properly funded NHS where they aren’t being worked to the point of burnout and they need a proper wage increase. That alone could do away with any charity offering sticking plasters. I feel like the nhs charity is more about making the general population feel good rather than face some hard truths. The NHS is not a charity and it needs to be properly funded. Where’s the 35 million a week? Where’s our national insurance hikes going? Everyone seems to prefer watching an old man walk up and down rather than ask the difficult questions.

I only saw a book extract in the Daily Mail, does anyone know if there were any other revealing tidbits in the book where Tom did, or didn't, come across well?

I read his book last year after receiving it as a Xmas present... I quite liked him back then but it did put me off him the way he talked about his ex-wife. There was a part where he said he was glad he never had any kids with her because she would have made a terrible mother. I thought it was a bit harsh, he even admitted she had mental health issues and had a strange upbringing. She probably wasn't a bad person.

I'm so grateful for this forum where i can vent. I too got 'creepy grandad' vibes off Tom, and just the other day found out about the link with Clement Freud. I think the media hysteria was ridiculous. There were other people doing similar things, including little Tony Hudgell who had no legs after being abused by his birth parents, but few people outside London have heard of him. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I am a media graduate and I know how it works and what goes on behind the scenes and I always got the feeling there was another agenda, but I still don't know what.

God how have I only just found this!

I felt like I was a bad person when the Captain Tom stuff was going on as I didn’t like it one bit - sponsoring an elderly man to walk for something that our taxes/NI should pay for and isn’t a charitable organisation? To then knight said person felt a bit much as well.

It was more after all that carry on that I felt most uncomfortable - being thrown around like a show pony when elderly and frail.

Also in terms of the. holiday - there were plenty of things I wanted during the pandemic, to see my grandmother for example, but I couldn’t. We can’t always get what we want. Unless of course we are the Moores in which case we do what we like.

In terms of the foundation - the only time I’ve really known foundations being set up are by families with a lot of money that the wanted to use for philanthropy. For example, one family i worked with (I handled some of their legal work), had a lot of money and also held charitable events. They set up a foundation to funnel it through for tax reasons etc. in my opinion, I am entirely unsure why the Sir Tom foundation exists beyond a money making exercise for those involved. Realistically, foundations that aren’t even raising their own funds cannot have required even set up costs of those amounts. Given the size, they only need to do limited accounts which again makes it difficult to understand where the money has gone. Just dodgy to me
