I stopped after week one because I thought it was extremely trite. I feel that in this country we treat NHS staff and public sector workers like crap but think banging on pots will help them pay their bills. I know I'm a Debbie downer but there's been far too many hollow gestures when we need systemic change (which we haven't got a hope in hell of getting).

Legacy?! He did 100 laps of his garden, anyone would think he dedicated his life to charity work. Some people actually do and they don’t get special treatment like this

My granny's funeral lasted 20 mins. I didn't even get to go.

Thats one of the cruelest things of the passed year, surely everyone who has lost someone this year for any reason must be looking and think wtf. Thus is really rubbing their noses in it and its not fair.
I also wonder what other military families are thinking right now. I hope they all request a fly past for their brave hard working family members who have given their lives in war or died of old age decades after leaving the service

How many people really needed to be up speaking at the funeral when there were only the immediate family there? Sorry but I wouldn’t put my child through the experience of having to recite a poem to camera on such an occasion, she’s young and it was unnecessary other than for attention. All of their speeches seemed so geared towards a wider tv audience, in a room with only children/partners/grandchildren why would you keep referring to him as “My Dad”, not just “Dad” or “our Dad / grandad”. Cretins the lot of them. I hope now there are so few left that all WWII veterans are given some level of military fanfare at their funerals if they wish. Captain Tom did a lovely thing last year but other than serving in the war (which is amazing commendable but not especially unique) and his walks round the garden, led a fairly ordinary life from what I can gather, a spitfire fly past at his funeral and TV broadcast was overkill.

Also I wonder if other people who knew and loved him were denied a place to pay their respects because Hannah & Co wanted the film crew and sound person there!!

My Grandads a WW2 veteran. No honours for us (same crem as CT!) Doesn't count because we didn't force him round the garden nor do we reside in a posh 2m house out in Marston lol

Agreed. He seemingly waited until he was 99 years old to raise money for charity.

Obviously I'm not criticising the money he did raise. But the press talk about him like he dedicated his life to charity fundraising. He didn't.

I don’t agree with this as horrible as it sounds, I’d rather they had done this when 100k people lost their lives. I’m fed up with all this special treatment

And to think, people died on their own but this man had his family around him and now all this pomp. I've totally lost my faith in this country, there is hardly any humanity left. I read the comments under an article about refugees yesterday and I could have cried. On the one hand, we are meant to weep over a wealthy 100 year old man but can't show the slightest bit of humanity for people risking their lives to get to safety? Something is very wrong in this country and has been for a long time.

She doesn't know what a troll is. Nobody has had a go at Tom. We all know he's a legend who did bloody well. All the flack is for one person and one person only and that's Hannah. No law was broken but it wasn't wise to take him there and then have him meet lots of other people with no social distancing. I also felt sorry for the locals with people from our highly infectious island going there when they aren't doing too bad. She had the chance to explain why they took the trip and she hasn't done so. The anger she's got towards the public who were more concerned for her dad than she was should be directed towards herself for what she did.

A funeral director where I am are running a competition, open to all kids, to draw Sir Tom or something that reminds them of him. Then the pictures will be going in the window.

Just following on from the first thread, my Grandfather is now at "visitor allowed" stage BUT.....

Only one visitor unlike CT being allowed 3 at one time.

Tried using the line of exceptional circumstances/case by case basis but my Grandfather is a war vet too and we are a VERY small family and about to get smaller. I'm seriously angry at the hospital but glad I did get to see him before he was taken to hospital. Alas he had the vaccine too late as didn't start until January here so by time he got his he was in hospital a couple of days later

Went to the local Tesco earlier and there were these 4 books next to each other of inspirational people. Marie Curie, David Attenborough and Martin Luther King (may have been Jnr, I'm unsure) which I agree all 3 are very inspirational and awe inspiring. But who do I see slotted between David and Martin? Fucking Tom! A man who walked around a garden! How does he even compare! Absolutely ridiculous
