Thanks for having a decent, balanced thread on this topic. Nothing but respect for Captain Tom. The only bad thing I've ever seen about him was that horrible Tweet which got the guy arrested.

But I am so sick of seeing his daughter all over the news. Don't get me wrong, she's a bloody PR genius for this shitshow, I just couldn't imagine parading my ill, frail parent around. She's very good at coming up with new angles for the media to salivate over, even in death. Today, she's comparing him to the Queen because they have the same spirit or some nonsense. I think it was very telling and speaks to her media ambitions that as soon as his story went viral, she had the law firm Schillings firing off warning letters to the press.

It reminds me a bit of the ongoing Kate Garraway story with her husband. Massive sympathies to the family, but please stop with the daily news stories. And if you dare speak up, you're an 'evil troll' or 'wishing death'. It doesn't help that the media has completely lost sight of the real definition of trolling.

I've only just found this thread but I'm glad I did because it confirms all the misgivings I have had for ages (and shared elsewhere but been roundly shouted down!)

When I first saw the story last year about this old guy walking his garden I thought 'good on him, how fab' and I made a small donation. But that was when I thought he was just a random almost centenarian doddering round the lawn in his suburban semi. When I realised the publicity machine behind him, and the family's general level of wealth, and the massive mansion type home they live in, that put a very different spin on it.

What he achieved was admirable. But there are so many people doing equally admirable things, so many other people who deserve recognition for inspiring others - like the amazing Fauja Singh (who I'd never heard of before this thread but am completely in awe of now, I'm less than half his age and can't imagine running a marathon!) or in terms of enduring contribution to charity, someone like Rosemary Powell who spent 97 years selling poppies.

It feels like this has all become an industry of itself orchestrated by his fame hungry daughter.

And also - this has probably already been said so apologies for raking over old ground - if he wanted to go to the Caribbean, and assuming he could not personally afford to do so, why at no point in the last 20 years did his daughters not put their hands in their (deep) pockets and send him? Why wait til he was on his last legs and realistically too ill to travel? Or was that just because it was offered for free...

How was doing a charitable deed obsessional? How was he deluded? How was his charitable act inappropriate? The man who was fully lucid when interviewed did a fund raiser so well done him, what have been your positive contributions to society during this pandemic?

None of my criticism is aimed at him. It's his family, and particularly his fame hungry daughter. He was a lovely chap but his daughter is milking him like a show pony.

I read it as them saying the family are being obsessional and behaving inappropriately not Tom.

Tom was a old geezer who did fuck all for 60 years after he did fuck all in WW2, Then decided to walk up and down his garden, and then he died. Woohoo. Who cares. The man was a nobody, Probably racist, too.

To be fair, to his family he wasn’t a nobody and they do care but, as a family, they should realise that the public don’t need to be reminded of him every two minutes and they should celebrate, grieve and remember him in private.
He was their father and grandfather - not ours.
I wish they’d realise that, yes he did a good thing but people move on with their lives so Hannah, if you’re reading, please stop with drip feeding reminders to us. If the fund raising was TRULY altruistic then enough now please.

I also don’t think someone should be called “probably racist” unless there is proof to back up these claims.

Can't believe what I'm reading in the media announcement made by greedy Hannah. Who on Earth would want to go to a museum and look at his ties, jackets and his walking frame?!! Tom was not a celebrity, royalty or a famous inventor - he was a member of the public. I seriously wonder that Hannah must be unstable and deluded. She needs to stop milking her dead father as it's becoming very grotesque and vulgar.

I'm convinced people are just trying to outdo each other in the LOOK HOW MUCH I CARE!!! stakes when I see people suggesting things like a statue in Trafalgar Square, face on a banknote, national holiday, etc. Just people bored in lockdown desperate for attention and they are using poor old Tom to get it.

It's become a very twisted competition that I can't begin to understand. What drives people to behave this way? I find it so interesting!
