In a country with social health care, there are scapegoats and villains.

WHO had guidelines and suggestions. The NHS pushes it.

Doesn’t mean formula is bad.

I don’t even know where to start with this 😂 all this alleged scientific knowledge yet you seem unable to comprehend text. Can you quote where I’ve suggested breastfeeding has no benefits? Or are you just being a drama llama (actually don’t answer that- you’ve answered it yourself with the “discontent” argument)

@Notgonnalie my friends are wonderful, as, (as I previously stated), the support given by breastfeeding counsellors. 2 of them are also scientists and will happily tell you there is no science involved 😁
I’m sorry, I don’t think I mentioned you or quoted you at all? So not sure why you’re having a go at me…And I never said I had specific scientific knowledge, I said that breastfeeding has lots of scientific research behind it.
😊

It's fine to bottle feed, the vast majority of babies are bottle fed, why else are there aisles of baby milk and bottles in every supermarket.
It reads just like an ad

I totally agree here! I’m hate weaning. My friend was desperate to start it early and I think she did, each time their own, but I’ve waited until
6 months each time (my 3rd is currently 4 months but I’ll wait again) I think people mix up the four month sleep regression with them needing food. But I’m waiting until I absolutely have to start it 😂 I don’t enjoy doing it.
I waited till around 6 months for mine too and don’t regret it! It was messy but easy because I wasn’t forcing them before they were ready. Good point about the 4 month sleep regression it was so bad with my first! But her sleep was terrible till around 9 months so food wouldn’t have made a difference. Lost count of how many times people told me I should just give her baby rice or a rusk to help her sleep, because sugar in a rusk is going to help a tiny baby sleep well🤷🏻‍♀️ Then when she was over 6 months and still sleeping terribly people had no answers and apparently it was my fault. Can’t win😅

Please stop trying to provoke me into an argument and continuing a pointless conversation. You disagree that there’s science behind breastfeeding, that’s absolutely fine I have no desire to change your mind or convince you of anything.

Fed is best.
I BF my oldest for almost a month before I stopped because he wasn’t gaining weight and it just wasn’t working. I felt so guilty but once I got over the guilt I felt so much better mentally and he was happy and was gaining weight.

Literally got told in a Facebook group tonight that by formula feeding my son I gave him the leukemia that killed him when he was 4. Because apparently FF increases risk of leukemia which is completely BS. So fucking over mum groups and mum shamers.
Im so sorry for your loss and despicable treatment you received. Now THATS shocking xxx

Sadly the issue of feeding always descends into people being offended or getting hot under the collar.
Yep, it's really very odd. Personally I couldn't care less how anybody chooses to feed their kids, I just don't want to seeing ridiculous 'poor me' crying photos on instagram.

Not sure how I quoted my own post there. So if we take the SIDS risk as a baseline, everything you do is either a protective factor, or a risk factor. Breastfeeding, as the biological norm, is taking into account when calculating the baseline. Formula isn’t, and therefore raises the risk above baseline.

When my first baby was born 40 years ago I was actively discouraged from breastfeeding ! , I stuck to my guns though whilst in hospital all breast feeders got a bottle of mackesons stout it was said to be good for making milk ! I was often given 2 definitely helped with the sleeping the whole 10 days I was in she slept 6 hours every night got home and was up feeding every 2 hours so my dad bought me a crate !! Can you imagine this now I would be hung , drawn and quartered !!

I’m not putting her down as such. I’d just like to understand breast feeders way of thinking, would switching to bottle feeding so that mum and baby are both happy and healthy not be better than struggling in pain? I know ultimately it’s the mothers choice and I respect that but I do wonder why.
For me it was stubbornness. I wanted to do it so I would. I didn’t want to quit as for me I’d be ashamed. When I spoke to other ladies, they had a similar train of thought but each woman’s motivation for breast feeding or not is completely different.

That’s horrendous. My son cried every second of every day until he was 18mo except when he had a boob in his mouth. But I remember him howling on the ward and feeling like everyone was judging me for being a shit mum. That midwife sounds awful, I wonder how many mums have been turned off bf by her attitude alone?
Yeah that feeling of being judged for the crying was awful! I think I was on a ward with 2 expectant mothers, who were absolutely lovely and never once complained - I was quite friendly with them in the end. And one more experienced mum who was on her second or 3rd. She was the one who made the dummy comment. Ironic really considering I was most worried about disturbing the pregnant mums yet the one who was already a mum was the most openly judgemental.

But yeah I probably would have taken that bottle that first night if I wasn’t already armed with breastfeeding knowledge and probably would regretted it (and spent a small fortune on tins of formula). I’d imagine many mums did and I wouldn’t have blamed them at all because trying to BF with little support as a brand new mum is so hard.

My first was that baby who cried. I would go and sit in the tv lounge in the middle of the night and feed her so no one would tut at me. No midwives ever helped, when I asked they would just put her on my boob without asking if they could touch me. After two days I cracked and asked to feed her formula after they gave me a breastpump and told me to express and I got nothing out. They wouldn't let me feed her formula as they said it would upset her so they took her away and bought her back stuffed to the gills with formula. When I was discharged they told me not to let her go hungry and to top her up. But I'm a determined lass when I k ow what I want. It took me 8weeks but eventually i breastfed her exclusively until she stopped at 22 mths despite a very unsupportive health visitor and slow gaining baby. My second was a dream to feed, ten minutes then four hours between and she piled the weight on. I fed her until she was 4 😆 then my third was a nightmare. Tongue tie, then slow weight gain etc but we got there and I fed him till he was 3.
Supermama!! Your boobs have paid their dues, no doubt about it!!

It would have been back in 2012 so was a fair while ago now!

That’s so good you had a midwife sticking up for you after the doctor told you to stop breastfeeding. Doctors can be even more clueless on this stuff, as obviously they’re not trained in baby feeding i’d imagine. So difficult for us mums though who are being told conflicting info everywhere we turn in these settings.
And trust that medical professionals know best, which in the case of bf isn’t always true.

I don't "lecture"just because I have a different opinion , I'm stating facts and expressing misunderstanding at why people don't chose to give babies the best.
And horror at opinions like yours which are damaging.
My needs are certainly not being met - no sleep or time to myself, but it is a worthy sacrifice to give my baby the best start. His needs come first.

Giving the baby the best also includes the baby having a happy mum who isn’t mentally and physically stressed.

Breast or bottle feeding is just one small aspect of raising a happy healthy child whichever method is chosen.
I agree - a lot of the time what mum needs is more support and correct advice which we are definitely lacking in the UK.

With my first baby, I really struggled as I have inverted nipples and she couldn’t latch. After the first week she’d lost so much weight the doctors told me I had to formula feed because she was so tiny. I was devastated and tried pumping for her for a month and hardly produced any milk.

My second baby I managed to breastfeed him for 2.5 months before I had to return to full time teaching - 7am - 5pm and I really struggled pumping for him while at work.

Both my kids are super healthy - they rarely even get a cold. I felt a lot of guilt for not being able to feed them both for longer but in the end it is what it is. It really upsets me people saying lack of milk is just an excuse. It was so real for me and I’m sure for many others.
You did what you could and tried your best, don't feel guilty. Any breastmilk is golden and beneficial.
I just don't understand not trying at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ And the lack of support for so many is upsetting.

Well when you have raised 4 happy healthy Kids to Adulthood , please come back to me and tell me how to do it correctly Dear. You cant teach your Granny to suck eggs 😆
Happy and healthy - they must have been breastfed then 😆

I'd love any advice anyone could give me on breastfeeding after a c section. I really struggled getting my son to latch properly last time so we gave up as he eventually just stopped trying when presented with the nipple (he had formula from a cup and was a big boy at 10lb 5, not sure if this contributed)
I also think for a really healthy breastfeeding relationship, it’s important to know what the normal behaviours of a Breastfed baby are in the first month or two. If you google “fourth trimester” it will help give you a sense of what behaviours you may see that could be different from what you had last time with your son as he was formula fed. I think it helps reassure new breast feeders that their baby is getting plenty, and their behaviour has biological reasons behind it.
Surround yourself with people who will be supportive - family or friends who have breastfed and can give you support when it’s needed

I always just think of those horrible stories where a woman has been so pressured and had it drilled into her that breast is best that they try to persist against all odds and the poor baby ends up dying from dehydration etc. Read a few articles like that. For that reason alone I think fed is best. By all means try to breast feed (no one is disputing that's it's superior) but formula can be literally life saving too
