All the backlash on Gavin for his worst of the year list is so awful. He’s such an advocate for children’s books and boosts books so much. He posts a few of his least fave of the year as everyone does and he’s gotten so much tit from authors who are nothing to do with it. Apparently it’s been ‘a tough year for writers’. Yeah it’s been a tough year for everyone that’s got nothing to do with it. Negative reviews are important and booktube is for readers. People really showing their asses over this.
I was astounded at that, luckily so many people rallied around saying these authors were being ridiculous.

lol speaking of, Jean (Bookish Thoughts) yet again posted an instagram story mentioning her wishlist, there’s no question box to answer her actual question and story replies aren’t on, but there is a swipe up link included. How subtle.
Yes, I saw that too. Thought it was in bad taste to post just after Christmas ... and she's done lots of these in the last few months. I was appalled when she listed items of clothing, they were all crumpled and looked like they'd been stuffed in the back of her wardrobe - why would she expect people to pay upwards of £10 for tat? The least she could have done was run an iron over them.
I've unsubscribed.

Exactly! I actually have a lot more respect for booktubers who are honest and admit when they don't like something. It always seems sketchy to me when all some of them do is praise books and don't delve into any criticism.

I had no idea there was a booktube forum on here! Loving it. I'm so out of the loop because I unfollowed all booktubers last year because they just all felt too entitled and boring. I heard there was some drama with Ariel, but I never fully understood what happened.

I'm shocked at Jean doing that! I thought she was all socialist and pro-working-class - it doesn't seem kosher in that narrative to subtly drop your wish list with a link like that, expecting and hoping some poor sod to buy a book for you. She lives at home and doesn't have to pay rent, I'm sure she can afford them herself.

From what I understand, Ariel and Raeleen chose Kiley Reid's Such a Fun Age (which is about token allyship) for the buddy read for The Reading Rush, and then neither of them actually bothered to read it which just rubbed people up the wrong way. I think they apologised for it, and it will be really interesting to see what happens with the next Reading Rush and if big changes are made. If not, I think its time is limited.

Little Book Owl shared her readathon calendar/video in December which I'm happy to have bookmarked. It will be nice to actually have somewhere to figure out what readathons are on and when as sometimes there are so much on, I just never know until too late.

Oh my gosh I forgot she existed and didn’t even notice she’d not been posting. I’ll go check it out.
Same! It came up in my recs and I watched it. I find it interesting, I think she was very open and honest with her mistakes and what she is going to do to tackle it. However, it isn't my place to forgive her for any of it really and the proof is in the pudding as it were. Hopefully she will keep up with them.

I think Simon Savidge needs to write a list of what people can and can’t talk about on his social media.
I get that he wants an outlet, but talking about a certain thing and then saying “but don’t talk to me about it” is ridiculous.

I looked at his instagram, is this about his mentions of shielding? Tbh I unfollowed / unsubbed ages ago so I’m out of the loop, is it him that needs to shield? If basically the whole UK is back in lockdown why is shielding specifically an issue? (Not to be dismissive, lockdown/shielding is obviously not great, just don’t understand and his posts are very vague).

He’s said the same things since the new year - lockdown, shielding etc - he wants to mention how badly he’s handling it but doesn’t want anyone to comment because of course people comment the “wrong” things (even when people are being nice and trying to be helpful he moans about them)
He has to shield because he has a chronic illness (dercums) and his partner is a key worker so he has to keep his distance. I realise it’s tough but I’m sure there tons of people in the same boat. It’s just the whining about not having people talk to him about it that annoys me.

What does his partner do? I thought he was a chef for some reason.

Just popping in to say I’m in love with MaryAmongStories. So so genuine feeling and her editing style / filming is so different I love it. Plus she doesn’t just read YA!

Ohh, thanks! Maybe he should just not mention it at all then. Can’t help thinking of Jen Campbell who has basically been shielding since last March, I think she’s handled it really well on social media, sharing perspective that some people might not be thinking about if they don’t know somebody who needs to shield, and especially her recent stories (and twitter thread?) on the impact it’s had on her such as not being able to go in for medical appointments she needs and IVF being postponed.

Like you said, why mention it only if he’s going to say but don’t talk to me about it. 😕

Agree re: Jen Campbell. She's so brilliant. I can't take Simon seriously when he talks about shielding after he's been staying in multiple London hotels to film a TV show.

Yeah, I like Jen and I like her engagement with followers too. I really feel for her with the IVF being delayed, it isn't fair.

He hasn't just done it with shielding/lockdown, there was one time he was in a bath (on holiday, I might add ... something that a lot of people have not had this year!!) and he said "Oh, I'll get the usual comments about my arms being out" (or something like that), I'm like ... jeez, man. Why acknowledge these comments? Just ignore them if you don't like them! He never really talks about the nice/positive/agreeable comments he gets (which he must do), it's all negative all the time

Sort of reminds me of those people who purposefully put themselves down just to get compliments out of people.

I adore Mary too - she's so gentle in nature it seems, and her videos are always so relaxing to watch.
