I made it to the end of Atmosphere! Too much space and felt a bit try hard. I’ve loved some of the other TJR so I was disappointed.

this is why I love reading because its all just so subjective and i find people’s views so fascinating.

I personally found it didnt have alot of ‘space’ and was basically a romance with space thrown in there somewhere, but it wasn’t the focus.

i listened to it on Audio and I do think this is one of those books that the audio makes it that much better, I don’t think I would have loved it as much as I did if I read it.

i too was disappointed with atmosphere.

tjr is one of those authors where i’m very aware of her presence while reading her books (if that makes sense), and this was particularly bad in atmosphere for me as i felt like she was constantly nudging me like wow isn’t this sad? are you sad? look at all this incredible research i did? you’re sad, right? space! and i really didn’t care for it 🤣

I did it on audio and that deffo helped! The suspense was built better! I wouldn’t have enjoyed it any other way! So fully agree

I read and enjoyed Atmosphere but I don't understand how it has made it on to so many lists of best books. It was an enjoyable read, as was The Correspondant but don't think either really deserve the hype they have.
They both must have great publicity machines behind them.

I tried and failed to get into The Correspondent as an audio book, so I’m just going to wait for it to become available as a physical book from the library.

I read The Husbands in two days though and really enjoyed that.

Just started Dame Jilly’s 4th book in the Rutshire chronicles The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous - exactly the kind of fun read I need right now!

I read this one once (and none of the others) and it was ridiculous but so much fun 😅

Just started reading this which seems to be billed as a magical fantasy by some. On page 40 and I'm hooked.

I am about to start this and I already know that by the end of it I'm going to be an emotional wreck.

England, 1940. “Hello Gracie,” Louisa reaches out a trembling hand to the six-year-old little girl. Her dark eyes are wide with fear and Louisa’s heart shatters. She is devoted to the children in her new boarding school. But when the war comes closer than ever, can she keep them safe?

Louisa Brightford is anxiously preparing to turn her home into a boarding school when with a bang of the exhaust, a car carrying nine evacuated children arrives. As they tumble out and run around the sun-kissed fields and her rambling mansion, the children capture Louisa’s heart. They need love and care, and she is glad to play her part while her only son David fights in the battle for Britain’s skies.

Wide-eyed Gracie, who lost her mother in the bombing, clings to Louisa like a shadow. Can she be the parent she needs? And, though she thought she’d never find love again, she finds herself drawing closer to Jack, the children’s handsome, kind teacher who dances with her to gramophone music in the long summer evenings. But when the governors threaten to close the boarding school, it seems she might soon lose them all…

Then Louisa receives terrible news about David. Through the depths of her grief, she must find the strength to fight for her beloved lost children. But is there a future where she and Jack can be a family for little Gracie? Or when German planes fly over their peaceful village, will they be torn forever apart?

I loved Atmosphere. Sure, I felt a bit manipulated but I was still crying my eyes out by the end. Love how everyone sees it differently though!

Thank you for another great excuse to buy a book!
Happy to help enable - I mean, assist in protection from the heat.

I got two books I'd been putting off buying till a Waterstones weekend appeared (T Kingfisher's Daggerbound and Claire North's As We Fall Through Time), so I'm pretty happy

Loved seeing the full list, thanks for putting together @Harlot O'Scara !

I am in a gap between reads so need to sit down with the TBR pile tomorrow and re-read all the blurbs and see which one spikes my interest. I'm on holiday soon and I always feel like there's more pressure to choose a good read when you've got limited space! Can't bring four different 'back ups' 😅

I thought the same about The Correspondent. I dont know why so many people felt such kinship with Sybil, I really did not like her at all.

I’m really interested in the publishing industry and how the sausage gets made. I’m currently watching Younger and it’s funny to see how certain publishing trends and tropes were gently satirised in the show.

I learned a lot from these two articles:
