Amazon just recommended me a book called ' West of Wicked'. It is described as a sexy spicy dark wizard of oz retelling.

I have read the blurb and it appears that Dorothy shags either the tin man or scarecrow or both. It costs 99p. I am going to have to read this out of morbid curiosity.

I'm tired of these infantile cutesy canva infographics that tell me what I can or cannot do/read. I will read something based on the blurb, the plot summary etc. I won't read anything to be seen as cool or virtuous by anyone. Especially as reading time is a finite resource, read what intrigues you or makes your soul happy, not what someone says you should. Just my opinion.

Edit to add: it would be better if they simply post a list of their recommendations of books because they love those, without pitting them against other books in a way that preaches to the audience. You can uplift things you want to without telling everyone they are heathens for reading a book by an author who was before your time or who has opinions that differ from yours. If they preach/patronise then I am very much LESS inclined to give their preferred books a try.

I like Andrea Mara and have just bought her new one. In fact, I have recently celebrated my birthday and bought/was gifted a LOT of books. Best birthday ever!

I have a suggestion along the lines of the chatgpt thing. But with a real person!

There's a wonderful independent bookstore in Bath called Mr B's Emporium and they do a thing called a Reading Spa. You meet with one of their booksellers over tea/coffee and cake and talk about what you love and they give you loads of recommendations. I haven't done a 'Spa' yet but last time I visited I overheard one going on and it sounded like the loveliest bookish chat. If anyone lives near Bath or ever takes a holiday there I think well worth doing! I will be booking myself in next time I am there.

My new find is that National Trust sites have second hand bookshops! Maybe not all, but the last 2 I've been to have.

The one today had so many decent books, lots of newish ones. I didn't buy any though as I'm on a mission to get rid of my paperbacks, not add more.

I dislike Frieda McFadden immensely so why her book was picked twice I'm not sure. It may be because my rule of just 8 tbr books at any one time and I figured if I had her it would kill two birds with one stone. She hurts my eyeballs and it was a waste of reading time. 1.5* rounded up to 2*.

I think my favourite book was This Book Won't Burn it is a young adult book and does read as such. It was quite predictable, but I got a little bit teary eyed as the main character went on her journey.

Anyway, a full page of bookmarks pleases me!

I think I have to wait until 1st July for the summer challenge.

I understand how older books can be problematic now, but I think when they are a reflection of their time then allowances can be made. Reading it isn’t endorsing the behaviour or mindset, it’s learning about a time when it was normalised.
