I finished 28 Summers by Elin Hildebrand and despised it. Can't fathom why it is so beloved by her fans.
Ah that’s disappointing - I’ve been contemplating that one.

Editing now I’ve seen @Seaside Girl2 ’s post.. have either of you read Hotel Nantucket? I was hoping 28 Summers could be similar easy summer vibes.

i finished great big beautiful life yesterday and i need to have a talk with emily henry about the complete dip in quality in her last three books 🥲

all have involved couples i think should be actively avoiding each other rather than dating 🤣
Please do!!
The SPEED of the enemies to lovers in that book phewf not sure I was ever clear on when or why she started liking him.

same! and we were meant to forget that she was dating someone else who she basically never officially broke it off with?! - they were so incompatible that i couldn’t believe we were meant to be rooting for them.

not to mention how uninteresting the temu evelyn hugo subplot was 🥱

ha! I liked the subplot more than the main romance one 😂 Though I can see the temu evelyn hugo comparison.

Totally forgot she was dating someone else!!

I still can’t believe she bothered to write the EHugo-esque plot, it was never going to compare to a very similar, much loved, very popular book!

Anyone looking for a contemporary, political (2000s to 2020s era), family issues sort of read. I can highly recommend Never Been Kissed by Jessica Stanley.
Now I'm completely hooked on The Correspondent.

I haven't read Hotel Nantucket, still hoping to get to that one and the Five Star Weekend this summer!

As for 28 Summers, mild spoilers based on like the plot summary available to anyone I just couldn't root for the main couple, at all. For no good reason they decide to have an almost 3 decades long affair instead of being together. Literally no good reason whatsoever. I empathized more with the Evil Career Woman Spouse than with either of the lovebirds. The tone was also uneven imo, as was pacing and narration.

I agree on GBBL and HP but think Miles and Daphne could work out on FS, not without issues but like with therapy and good communication.

GBBL was super jarring too cause it has possibly the least developed couple of all (and if Harriet and Wyn from HP have no haters, I'm dead) and yet, their happy ending was by far the most solidified of them all. They hardly knew each other and I hardly knew them at all!

Apparently we were indeed meant to forget cause I'd have lost millions if asked if whatever her face is was dating someone. (Alison? Alice?)

I’m glad it’s not just me. I’m about halfway through (I had some Spotify audiobook hours to use up while I’m travelling) and it is a slog…

Also forget she was dating someone! It wasn’t even that long ago I read that book either!
I enjoyed book lovers, but the others of hers I’ve read have just been ok. I’ve not read happy place, or people we meet on vacation but after seeing the movie version of it, I’m unlikely to bother.

Finished the someday garden by Ashley Poston last night. I fear the seven year slip was as good as it gets. I found that one really sweet but her others haven’t really hit for me.

miles and daphne were definitely the ones with the most potential (i just couldn’t get past him basically trying to get back together with his ex mere moments before the resolution) - harriet and wyn should have never even spoken to each other again. it’s still wild to me that emhen tells us numerous times that her pottery is TERRIBLE and he is MISERABLE but we’re meant to support her giving up her job to commit to a pottering life. come on now.

i absolutely finished it like i didn’t know them. and so many random plot points that were not resolved at ALL. i still don’t fully know what happened to the sister and i literally finished it two days ago. emhen what happened to you 😭

I’ve never read any Emily Henry, are there good ones you’d recommend for some light summer romance reading?

i really enjoyed her first three: book lovers, beach read (probably my favourite) and people we meet on vacation. there has been, to me anyway, a noted dip in quality since then 🥲

Currently reading the first Emma M Lion book, but there's no respect for the 1837 Wills Act. I can suspend my disbelief for many things, but this might break me.

Also, Kindle helpfully suggesting a Tolstoy book I might enjoy, after having read his Anna Karenina...

Agree - I was going to guess it’s when she started releasing annually but seems she always has.. although I suppose it’s likely she used her better ideas first.. enlighten us please EmHen.

maybe that’s it; her female leads have started to become identical to each other (though i guess her men are really similar too). i couldn’t get over how lazy and almost by numbers GBBL seemed.

it will have to fight to the death with happy place to be recognised as my least favourite emhen. though i have never in all my life rooted against a lead couple being together like i did in happy place 🤣 (actually, no, i did in talking at night too 🥲)
