My April round up -

Seven summers - Paige toon. I rated this 2/5 which seems a bit harsh now. It wasn’t bad but seemed to drag on a bit
Funny story - Emily Henry. 4/5, actually quite liked this, it was sweet and the supporting characters were great.
The price of honey - liane moriarty. 4/5 which seems high but in my defense I was stuck in a&e at the time. Good little short story.
Into the weeds - BK Borison. 3/5 I find a lot of her characters feel a bit flat. Ultimately starting to accept that she’ll likely never improve upon Good Spirits for me.
Atmosphere - Taylor Jenkins Reid. 5/5! Really really loved this. Devoured it, I thought it was so engaging.

currently also about halfway through the audible version of Project Hail Mary, and I started a book called Love, Wine and other highs by Lauren Rae which I got about 20% through and then took advantage of the new dnf section on goodreads.

27 unread books left on my kindle because all of my April reads were new ones!

I’ve been in such a book slump - I tried reading Ruth wares new book and it’s been a slow start so I’ve stopped and decided to start a bit lighter with an old Paige toon back - Lucy in the sky. Paige toon has definitely gotten better over the years because I’ve enjoyed her last couple of books but that Lucy in the sky book I really didn’t like. I felt Lucy wasn’t very likeable from the beginning..

But going to try her newest book. Don’t fall In love with me. And hopefully it’s a better read.

thriller would be my go to but I’ve just not fancied reading in ages :(

I just smashed through Heart the Lover this afternoon- a few weeks after devouring Writers and Lovers. Both were borrowed from the library (too exxy on kindle). I LOVED them both so much 😍

My April reads:

Favourite and 5 stars

To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee

4.5 stars

A Litter of Bones - JD Kirk

Mostly a good month. Worst book was The Girlfriend by Gemma Rogers, she reminds me of McFadden with her constant churning out of mediocre books but I cant stop myself reading them!

Every time you guys mention Heart The Lover I keep thinking for a nanosecond that it’s that awful Christmas book

So it turns out I probably did like My Name Is Lucy Barton more than I remembered, because I’ve raced through Anything Is Possible in a couple of days and loved it! More a collection of connected short stories that a novel, but flows so well and is beautifully written. Glad I’ve already got book 3 lined up on my Kindle!

That was book 5 of 5 for me in April and definitely the highlight. The lowlight was The Hunt For Red October. There were snippets of the exciting spy drama I was expecting, but it manly felt like a slow trudge through info on Cold War era submarines, which is not my thing! Took up much more of the month than it deserved!

Honorable mention to Vianne by Joanne Harris. I used to love her books back in the day and this reminded me why. Also to Rick Astley! A good read for anyone who grew up surrounded by SAW pop in the late 80s.

I’ve bought that recently and I’ve seen it’s a companion to Writers and Lovers. Do you think it’s necessary to read it first? I’ve seen some say it’s not

I’ve seen a bit of commentary re. W & L being a ‘letdown’ after H&L 🤷🏻‍♀️

I definitely don’t think you need to read w&L first. But there were a couple of little neat tie in’s which I appreciated having read the books in that order (but that could just be me!!)

i read the novelised version rather than the play (which i’ve seen and was incredible) and am genuinely shocked by how different someone’s writing can be from stage dialogue to prose. the writing is just really flat and repetitive with some really cringy metaphor choices, and everything that’s powerful on stage just doesn’t work on the page. it sort of comes alive a bit at the midway point but she then cannot sustain it.
That's really interesting. I've not seen the play, but I listened to the audiobook and didn't find it flat or repetitive. Maybe cringey in parts but it felt like that was intentional and part of trying to sell the story. I think it worked really well as an audiobook (and was narrated exceptionally well by Jodie Comer), but can see as a physical book that it probably wouldn't have sucked me in as well.

2* to Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley

3* go to Burn After Reading by Catherine Ryan Howard

The Story by James Patterson
The Housemaid's Secret by Frieda McFadden

4* for Womb by Leah Hazard

How much time do you leave between finishing a book and starting a new one?
I find it hard to start a new book the same day I have finished another. I do it occasionally but sometimes get characters mixed up in my head if they’re not widely different stories!

Depends. I don't read anything heavy or emotional and I read because I'm in the mood to so when the reading bug is strong, I can start the next book immediately (easier to do on kindle too). If I'm busy and not so much in a reading mood, can be a week.

I’m never without a book on the go, so pretty much straight away. (Or the next day if I finish one late at night of course!)

It’s not unusual for me to get off to a slow start with a new book though - my daily page count definitely increases the further in I get. I think that’s just a case of getting in to a new story and characters though so I don’t think getting a break between books would change that.
